Back in the day most subs were meant to be sealed in big boxes the soloB where the first to require a small sealed box !
Solo 12s were one of my fav subs in the mid 90s!!!they friggen POUNDED FILLINGS OUT YA TEETH!!
They still do friend of mine bought two 12s bout 14 years ago she still has them i just bought 3 10s yesterday still got it
Back in 1988 I competed in crank it up. I was pushing 143db. I was running the punch 45, a Rockford fosgate chip type eq., 4-12" MTX subs, 2-6" Rockford fosgate mids and 2 - 2 1/2" Rockford fosgate tweeters. All being pushed by the one punch 45. It never cut out unless my battery was falling below 11.9 volts. Never overheated. Most importantly it was clear as a bell cranked all the way up and the Bass was hard and solid--not vibrating like these new amps do when cranked up. It was like being in the front row of a concert!
@kskate91 Yeah, I got lucky with those solobarics....got them locally for a GREAT price. The 40x2 is an awesome amp as well and I'm sure it pushes the C12 very nice! Yeah, a P150 would have made those solobarics REALLY thump...maybe I'll do another vid with a P150 to show the difference...Thanks for the comment!
You definitely brought back some memories. I purchased one of these amps back in 94 used and they were pushing two Crunch 12” subs in a 93 civic. The good ole days of car audio.
Loving the videos as well as the DJ Magic Mike old school representing! I picked up a Punch 150 today in extremely good shape so I had to come watch all the old school vids... Keep up the great vids!
These videos.....simply amazing.......
Thats awesome man! I love the old round solo berics! I used to run two 12" round solo berics in my truck, off a Mmats 1400 Watt RMS mono block. They actually blew the passenger side rear window out of the truck! Those subs are no joke! Oh, and it's YOUR UA-cam chanel, Talk however you want bro, doesn't bother me at all.
I didn't click on this video to hear a pretty voice, I clicked on it to hear the sound system.
People who work on amps say these are relatively easy to repair. I have a couple of places I use who have original RF parts. One is Landis Technical Services in Denver, NC, the other is Freeman's Stereo in Charlotte, NC. Landis is more expensive and provides a "re-birth" sheet upon repair. Freeman's does an excellent job and b/c they are less expensive, I usually use them for my OS RF repairs.
love what your doing. i got into car audio in the late 90s. orion was big with there hcca and xtr stuff, i love seeing how it has evolved. keep it up. im gonna help support also to help out.
+Melanie Owen thank you for the comment. I started doing these types of videos back in 2009 when I noticed there was not much on UA-cam showing the car audio stuff I grew up either using or wishing I was using! It's really cool when I get comments like this and knowing my videos help bring back some cool memories...
thanks for doing it. you inspired me to build a lab. my wife dont unserstand but when she sees that other people share the same passion it helps the $$$$ i spend make more sense. iv watched most of your videos especially on orion products but im tryin to catch up on the other vids also. thanks for the response and thanks for the vids.
Thank you i know how to hook it up but wasnt sure if i could bridge it .Love your videos great job..
I love how hes bumping the late 80's early 90's hiphop on to how shit would have sounded back then with subs like these haha
Yeah, too bad Sony didn't like that I used DJ Magic Mike...or maybe they did. They get all of the ad revenue from the video! These 10's do much better with a Punch 150HD
Wow! Dude that is my old dream setup maybe a Punch 150 for alittle headroom but wow man that is awesome old school goodness you got there! I have the same era Kicker Competition 12 bridged it on my Punch 40x2 and it sounds unbelievable for 11 year subwoofer and 14 year old amp. Keep it up!
Brought back some memories hearing so DJ Magic Mike
Damn good stuff!!!!
Cant get enough of this stuff 👌👌
Hi Gary, yes, the Punch 150 can be bridged. Orange is positive, brown is negative. I have another video where I show the Punch 150HD vs a Phoenix Gold MS-275. Check it out to see what kind of power you should expect from your 150
@phatboytrex1976 Yes sir..if I had 5 cents for every time I've played a Magic Mike song, I'd be retired already....classic BASS from the old school dayz!
Don't forget kids!...Just because older designed subs don't have massive chunky surrounds doesn't mean they aren't as loud or LOUDER than huge surround subs!
@RWL2011 Yes, if we could only go back and correct our mistakes...Thanks for reminding me, I'll update it with a notation in the video.
i always thought that those where the most sexy woofers in the world. but damn they were expensive back then.
@jylp4u If you are referring to the subs in this video, both are s10c's. One may look different in the video, but they are the same...now you have me thinking, let me double check!
@Brian98362 Yeah, this was mentioned in another comment. The sound was the amp clipping, not the speaker reaching max excursion. I've benched my P45HD and these subs are "only" getting about 80w RMS each at 2ohms bridged. I'll do another video with a more powerful amp so we can really see those subs sing!
Magic Mike! Now that's OLD SCHOOL!!!!! My fav album was Vicious Bass.
Wish i could find a pair of those 10 solos for my truck today. Those were some of the best subs, put them on a 500 watt amp and dang hehe.
Yeah man, the Punch 150 makes them hit REAL hard. I have one of these in my car (you heard it a while back when I got the Orion amps from you). Very impressive for a single 10" sub
Beautiful subs
Too bad Sony gets all of the monetization from this video! I'd love to use this music, but I refuse to have all of my "little" profits go to the fat cat record labels!!
@jylp4u I see the difference you mention now. The one in the unpainted box is most certainly a s10c, as you said (pulled this one out a while back to put in my car's "stealthbox" type enclosure). You have GOOD eyes!! I'll pull the one out of the black box and check it, but I have NO doubt you are correct! (it's a s10d) GREAT CATCH!!
@bigdwiz Song was "Magic Mike Cuts the Record" from the CD "DJ Magic Mike & Royal Posse". I didn't see the MP3 on Amazon, CD only. Not sure about iTunes. If I had a penny for every time I've played this song since 1990, I'd be a RICH MAN! Classic "old School" bass tracks...
@wcjoey Yeah, DJ Magic Mike is true old school bass at it's best!! Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing!
Just got one of these not in the best shape but it still works. I'm gonna test it out on my rockford punch 100.2.
@dnjrosa I'm currently planning on using these in an upcoming oldschool install. I'll let you know if I change my mind and want to get rid of them...
@DaZeroCooL I'd use the terminal strips for the speaker/remote connection and get some distribution blocks (one 4ga to four 8ga) for the power and ground connections. The generic ones are pretty cheap on feebay
This amp is bad ass. I have on too and was usein it on 3 JL 10s for the longest time. Its a damn good amp.
Ahh good ol DJ magic mike!!! Love some DJ Fury, techmaster peb, power supply.... that's when bass music was good this stuff now a days hits good and low but it just ain't the same
@DaZeroCooL If you are referring to the terminal strip, I get them off eBay. If you want the super heavy duty ones, search for 600v 45a and you'll get many results, just choose the number of positions you want. They ship from China, so be prepared to wait a week or two
Not a prob, I have a PDF of the manual if you need it, just message me here on YT w/ your email addy. Thanks for watching and commenting!
one is an s10d and the other is an s10c, you can always tell by the cones, the C always has the dust cap and the D is just a solid cone.
miss those subs
@kskate91 I'll have to measure my box and calculate the volume. It just may be around 0.6 cu/ft and it sounds pretty good with around 180 watts from the P45HD. I bet that 75.2 does over 200 watts bridged into 4 ohms, so you should be good to go.
they sound raw to me, and u have an amazing camera lol.
@Hummer14able LOL, I've got a real one as my daily driver as well. Very few people call it "nice" most call it odd or ugly. It is very comfortable and has ZERO blind spots (and a front windshield like a bus)! All it needs is about 50 more HP...
What years solobarics one has solid cone and other kicker had a dust cap what’s one sounds better
So much DJ Magic Mike!!!
I have a mint old punch 150 around the same year can it be bridged ?Just wanted to know thinking about running it love the old amps thanks.
What's that RF 45 amp pushing at 1 ohm? Sounded like it had a little kick....
@bigdwiz Nah, I'm 1000% that the one in the black box is an s10d and the one in the raw box is an s10c. If you still have them, you should know that on the D the outer cone is the dust cap and if you pull them out the box you will see that the cones aren't the same. But that is really strange that I recently found out is that these solo-baric sub from that era also came in 2, 4 and 8ohm. I know because I own 4 15's 2 s15c and 2 s15d. 1 d is 8ohm the other is 4ohm and both s15c are 2ohm.
So back in the competition days who made the best amps and who had the best Subs. Talking about the major leagues like Alpine, Kenwood, Kicker, JL on and on.....???????? Thx
Big D please tell me you have those Solo-Baric stored away I have a Fascinations with those since I first got into car audio I love the square but the saying is sound is round and I can't argue that
I'm running a pair of the old Rockford Fosgate Punch 15"s, single voice coil. Each in a 3 cu/ft sealed box. They're powered by an old Peavey 8.5C amp. I use them as subs for my home theater.
Bought them new back in like 98 for like $75 each, and they still sound great today. Still tight and no edge rot. Probably the best money I've ever spent on stereo stuff.
@bigdwiz How do you think one of these would sound in a .60 cubic feet sealed box? Thats the max size Kicker recommends to put 450 watts to it but of course i'm not actually going to do that o.O. I'm wanting to power it with my Rockford Fosgate Punch 75.2. Will get alteast 150 watts unclipped power.
Hey man I just picked up a Kicker S10D for $20 was alittle dirty and missing the cork gasket part but works awesome. Can you put these in a regular sealed box? Like a prefab?
@danerobert14 Magic Mike, I think the song was "The House of Magic". I'll verify and comment if I'm wrong.
I LIKE OLD SCHOOL STUFF! =)
@dnjrosa As of 12/20/2010, yes, I still have these.
Yes, but with a 2 channel amp bridged seeing a 2 ohm load, it is effectively seeing 1 ohm load per channel
I have an S12C, what's the difference between that and the S12D?
rockford fosget is my fovurite amp...well nice vedioo...:)
Another good question is how does the old stuff hold up against the new technology?? In the 90’s era they were pushing limits with what seemed like endless money. So were those materials better than today.
I had a punch45hd running the whole thing in my car once! Didnt flicnk a second! Running comps in front, coaxa in back and a bazuka bass tube 10 inch in my 69 AMX!!!
What was the first song bigdwiz played
You gotta keep the Savard "do it bump doe" section. It all started way back here
Now this brings back memories bro. i had 2 RF Punch 150s pushing 2 12inch Solos and it would POUND!!!! It pushed my boys 15inch solo with ease as well! i blessed him and let him borrkw them when somebody totalled my 70 chevelle and he didn't want to give them back to me when i got a new car lol but i ended up trading him for a brand new white Hifonics zeus for the 2 RF 150HDs the good ol days!!! Man i love your videos so glad i found your channel. Do you ever sell any amps? i have a Black n Gold Lanzar opti drive 2200 4 channel competition amp and im trying to finda clean 2100 2 channel? please lmk thanks Benny
+svtkilr awesome bro! I don't have any amps currently for sale, sorry. Check UA-cam for Legends of Car Audio...he often has some really nice OS amps for sale
Hard hitting subs when powered properly! Imagine 4 solo 10s with 2 Rockford 200.2s in 96 extended cab S15. Rhompin!!
Have you thought about doing a video comparing old school sound quality vs. New stuff? I'm just getting back onto putting a much milder system together. Having trouble finding an amplifier with a decent snr that doesn't break the bank. I still have all of my old equipment. Trying to decide whether to stick with the old or get something new. Any thoughts?
Sorry didn't mean to do that but I have an original punch 45 and really want it to work because it was my dads. Got any advice ??
hey jus bought this amp for 5 bucks ahahaha theres only 2 wires coming out of harness on the far left side of harness i only got a yellow and black wire is to top 4 + and the bottem 4 - neg n e help thanks
I have a weird Question: Can we use one of these subs to project my 16inch kick drum on my drum set? I have an ac mic. How do you run sound from a mic to a powered sub?
Yes. You will need a mixer to accept XLR input from the mic, then output RCA to go into the powered sub
Thank you for your prompt reply! So the question is how to we power these subs to get them to kick?
Do you still have these solobarics????
WOW this video is 10 years old. If you still check this comments can you tell me the size of the box .. dimensions?
hey bigdwiz i just got one of these rare subs, do you recomend a sealed or ported?
Sealed. The 8” needs 0.33cu/ft, 10” wants 0.66cu/ft and 12” wants 0.88cu/ft per sub
Cool video my friend and don't change your voice goes with the videos 👍👍
I had a kicker zr 1,000 on 2 of these in a sealed box. Back 20 years ago. Wish I still had them even tho I paid like 350 a piece for them new .
old video but I thought the bass sounded clear. Like stated, so many videos are distorted by the sound. Good job keeping it clean.
Hey i have a punch subwoofer model number PCH 128. Is it rare? Worth anything?
@kskate91 Good price on the sub! Yes, they are designed for small sealed enclosures, anywhere between 0.8 and 1.2 cubic feet is optimal. One cubic foot is a good compromise. I think mine are between 0.6 and 0.8 cubic feet and that's how they came. I would go with 1 cubic foot and I'm sure many prefab 10" sealed boxes are around this size.
Old school usa kicker made are some of the best products ever i had 2 kicker comp 12s in a big 5cubic ft sealed box on a crappy power acoustic amp but they still beat my brains out in a daewoo lanos hatchback
are those around 1992 solo barics?what is the rms rating on them
I happen to have 3 solo baric 15's I think 2 s15d's and one s15c, but they're rated at 750w rms if I remember correctly. I also remember them being from around 1998. I still use mine to this day, but I'm currently only using one of them. I'm looking to install at least one of them in my car now, but I need an amp. I had a powerbass 1000.1 on 2 of them and the amp fried lol. That was about 5 years ago though... They're all svc subs, so to run at 1 ohm, I'd have to run 2 of them. The only thing is, all of mine have a different impedance... I have one 2 ohm, one 4 ohm, and one 8 ohm. When I ran 2 of them together on that pb amp, I had the 2 and 4 ohm subs together at 1.3 ohm. I'm kinda worried that running them like that may have been what killed the amp. However, I don't think that's the case. I say that because about 4 years before I had the pb amp, I was running them the same way on a boss rev635 and it did just fine like that.
Are those both 12c or was one 12d? Dust caps look different
They are 10's are you are correct! One is c and the other is d. Someone pointed this out years ago and I didn't originally notice
Shoulda used the 75... I owned one of those 10 inch old school SB for yrs and it would throw pretty good that 45 barely pushed em
Yessir, you are correct. The Punch 75 put out quite a bit more power. I tested one not too long ago ua-cam.com/video/z93o0MKMHNA/v-deo.html
thats rockford for you =) they impress everytime... kicker aint bad either though... im just NOW getting into the game.. I had two 12inch fosgate xlc I loved to death... but they finally bite the dust. I can't find anything that will quite replace them... haven't tried kicker comps yet... you think they will sound as deep as my classic xlcs did?
God Bless🎶👌🏿👌👍🏽
These are from the mid-late 1990's
Big d wiz with the oooold school car sterio hookup. Love the channel brother keep it up. Plz plz if u have 2 kicker xpl subs n a kicker xs or zr amp for them id luv to hear it.
45 was a beast
+BIGG-LEFTY 75 This video gets hate b/c people want to see subs flex in and out more than these were moving. I can tell you, this little amp was making some really impressive bass come out of those 10" solo's, although you can't really tell by this video
You will get the most money selling them on eBay as they are in demand. If you had a pair, I might want them
I have a 3 25th anniversary S15d's 2ohm svc in 1.5 box's if interested
rf amps luckily are better priced today and still great quality i have 3 RF amps rite now and another one soon!!!
name all songs?
About how much would it cost for Freeman's ? And do u have there address or email ?
Used to have the ol 45. Not sure why it's so fondly regarded. It was a good little amp but wasn't the only one back then.
The old solo's for some reason did amazing with rap or any heavy bass music but with rock they just fell flat, never understood why since every other sub in sealed boxes did better with that type of music but with rap I remember two 12's shook my whole apartment complex when my buddy showed up in the parking lot so long as he was playing rap.
To me, the 45 was just an amp I always wanted and at least in my location, they were always in short supply and high demand...I couldn't afford a 150, or HiFonics Thor, those were also great amps
Reminds me of when we had 2 competing audio shops, one sold Kicker, the other sold RF but never both in the same stores. RF's amps were pretty basic though, just that they were under rated and pretty small. I also think the punch bass boost which was actually at 41hz, 19 db's had a lot to do with RF's fame back in the day.
That is correct. It was the 41 or 45hz boost that made these amps sound so good in a car. Jim Fosgate did a bit of research on this around 1973.
Oh now I understand why most amps bridged recommend 4 ohms.. Thanks
why don't they make that many efficient punchy subs for lower wattages anymore? Only the lower end brands make stuff for the 2-500 watt range
JL Audio still makes some in this class. The WX subs. Also, JBL and Infinity have some lower wattage subs
www.ebay.com/itm/3-MTX-AUDIO-12-SUBWOOFERS-100-RMS-EACH-7-OHM-/222019103696?hash=item33b15eabd0:g:VfwAAOSwuTxV8IFS
I'm guessing all of the thumbs down are coming from those expecting harsh, distorted sounds from my mic? This amp is rated at 45 watts folks, it is not a 5kw monster!! I agree, the solo 10's aren't being pushed very hard, but I can tell you, they were putting out some clean, dynamic bass while shaking the foundation of my house. Are there any 45 watt amps sold today that could compete w/ the Punch 45HD? Didn't think so...
BigDWiz no dummy have you listened to the quality of your video
@@JohnDoeDeadhead420 bitching about shit you didn’t buy or pay to watch. Classic bitch moves.
Thumbs down are from straight bitter and hateful people… much love and bass
Those was my favorite subs for a long time and they used a really small enclosure sealed
I probably won’t hear back from you but I hope so. I’m 50 and went through this era. What size woofer would it push good without blowing them. Was thinking of getting the punch 45hd to push two subs
