It is, in deed, sad that this is the end, nevertheless I foresee myself still referring to your videos in my future as an engineer. Be aware of how great your teaching is going to impact the world, as me along many of my colleagues in engineering constantly recommend your videos. Before 2023 ends, I really wanted to take a time and write you some words of gratitude Professor Leonard. When I started taking Calculus in college I had a really bad time; I didn't understand, I had bad grades, and stressed up to the top. But it was not until you appeared like an angel that things started to get better. With your incredible skills to teach, your patience, and last but not least, your sense of humor, I finally started to master Calculus. My grades got up and ended passing Calculus 3 with an A, which is something I never thought to achieve. A subject that once was a nightmare for me, became a subject to which I developed affection and interest. On behalf of all students, I want to thank you for your job as a teacher and your voluntary decision to share it with the rest of the world. Although it is free, once I start working I am sure I'm going to be back and make the donation you deserve. Same here! I love the way he teaches and interacts with the students. It honestly feels more like I am watching a TV series, than watching a lecture, while also retaining so much information that he has been teaching! It's wonderful.
I'm waiting for videos like this to replace lectures; professors can exist to have office hours and answer questions like they do and they have more time for research. No need for thousands of professors to separately teach the same things that one person can do very well.
I don't think I've ever seen a professor work so hard to ensure that his/her students actually understand what the hell they are doing as much as this man. So many professors will just give you the formulas and breeze past the concepts especially in many math and science courses. This is not to say that they don't know their stuff, but rather sometimes it seems like alot of professors don't do enough coverage of concepts. Professor Leonard's teaching is by far the best I have ever seen. Clear, concise, intuitive; his lectures have everything a top quality lecture needs to have. _ avenger9709 A lot of professors don't actually care about the students, they just stand and half-heartedly cover a bunch of material and then they are like "okay, job done here, now I can go back to my research". It's extremely obvious almost immediately when a teacher has that attitude. They are those "serious", formal and apathetic types who just stand there and mumble almost to themselves throughout the entire lecture and never interact with the students. Basically the complete opposite of Professor Leonard in every way.

Out of all the math teachers I have ever had, it is safe to say that Professor Leonard is the MAXIMUM (using Lagrange Multipliers of course). Every. Single. I've never failed or even came close to failing a math course until Calc3. Had 40% on my midterms and needed 60% on my finals to scrape by with a D. I binge watched all of the second part of Calc3 on your channel in 3 days and I got 93% on my finals! Thanks Prof Leonard, you've saved me having to repeat Calc3, it really means a lot to me.

It is 1/21/2024 at 5:44 PM as I'm typing this. I started this course on 7/24/2023, and I had to take a break starting from early September until mid-December because I got busy with my semester. I picked it back up again after the semester ended, and I have just finished this lecture. My amazing teacher in high school who taught me Honors Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus BC used to assign us your videos during the quarantine 3 years ago while she was taking care of her mother in a different state since she had gotten sick from COVID. I got a 5 on my AP Calculus BC exam, and I'd like to partly thank you for that, because your lectures helped me while my teacher was taking care of her mother. As a result, I haven't had to take Calculus I nor Calculus II in college. I really loved your lectures back then, and I could tell that your style of teaching had influenced hers too, which I think is part of the reason why she was so great. I'm currently a Computer Science major and I have not had the chance to take Calculus III at my university yet, but I see references made to it everywhere, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and taught myself using this course. I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for putting these quality lectures on UA-cam FOR FREE! I understand Calculus III quite well now, although some more practice problems could definitely help, so I will do those in my own time. As for the concepts, I really appreciate how you explain them and it truly helps me understand it on an intuitive level. You make math so fun and engaging to learn. When I started Calculus III I wasn't sure if I was going to pass my class because I failed my first exam. My situation was similar to the one that Noel Robles had. It took me hours to finish my homework and I was frustrated because I didn't understand the material. Nevertheless, I found your videos just in time because at the end I managed to get A in calculus III, something that seemed impossible when I first started (wish I had found these videos when I was taking calculus I, my life would have been a lot easier). Hence, I just wanted to thank you for posting these videos, you have no idea how helpful they were to me.

It’s been a long journey from algebra to calc 3 , i remeber the first day i had calc 1 lecture i felt like i’ll not able to handle this and am not those who were made to be an engineer, but luckily i found your videos a time when i was most needed, i was watching your videos from intermediate algebra to calc 3 and i felt like am falling love in math coz everything start to make sense. i start doing well in my classes feeling like am one of the students who get the highest grades in each calc class that i took and that’s because of you just you no-one else. I just finished my Calculus III final exam, without your informative and well organized videos there is no way I would have been able to do as well as I did. My online class officially consisted of reading the textbook, watching five minute videos my professor posted, and then doing a five problem assignment. Hey Professor, I just wanted to take the time to thank you for all your videos. I study engineering at a major engineering university in Bavaria and always struggled with higher mathematics (as we call it over here). So much in fact that I came dangerously close to getting kicked out for failing higher math 2 (differential calc, integral calc, and analysis combined) three times. I took to studying your videos and actively working on the problems you present. Your aptitude for explaining incredibly complex abstract mathematical models and principles in an understandable and logical way is incredibly impressive. My mathematics professors, who's titles are longer than the rest of their names, seem to have zero ability to speak outside the boundaries of mathematical jargon, leaving many student like myself scratching their heads and failing exams. In the end I passed my exam and am well on my way to finishing my bachelors degree, something I may well not have accomplished without your help. So danke schön and keep up the good work. Though my course ends with Green's Theorem, I came to this video at the end of my 6-week summer Calc III course to express my gratitude for this incredible collection of lectures. My course was asynchronous without any lectures, meaning I was left with a textbook and the internet to teach me Calculus III. Fortunately, the professor overseeing the course knew about these lectures and linked them to our course page. For the past 6 weeks, I have watched 1-2 of these lectures a day and then worked on homework as I watched Professor Leonard work through examples. I came across lectures this channel during Calc I last fall (2023), and it has been invaluable in aiding me on concepts where I required further instruction. Having taken a class taught solely by Professor Leonard, I can confidently say that this man is an absolutely incredible instructor. I did not need any further instruction, as Professor Leonard explains these concepts wonderfully. Professor Leonard, thank you for your help over the past year (When I took Calc I) and if you have any thoughts of doing a lecture series for Differential Equations or Linear Algebra, know that those would be greatly appreciated by all!
My calculus 3 course was going a bit too slow for my taste, so over the course of about 3 weeks, i sat down and spent about 5-7 hours a day watching your lectures, taking down all the notes possible and working all the examples, and I have finally concluded this long and compact journey with big ole' stack of about 150-200 pages of calculus and now understand calculus better than I ever have before. There's no way I could thank you for this video series. You've become an inspiration to how I want to teach others one day.

I was doing horribly in the first few units of my current multivariable calculus class, and I thought that I was going on a downhill slope towards just not understanding the class at all and barely passing. I stumbled upon your videos miraculously when I missed my class on 3D local minima and maxima, and I've been hooked ever since! I nearly failed my first exam, but after finding your videos, I recently got a near perfect score on my second exam! I'm currently studying for the final and finishing up the rest of this video series, but as others have done already, I have to credit almost all of my success in this class and learning/understanding multivariable calculus to you! While I still struggle with focusing on the tests. I finally got a passing score on my exam. I am genuinely excited to learn more math. Great instructor who breathes life into otherwise confusing and dummy notations. He tells a story of human brilliance in breaking down complex thoughts and synthesize them back into well organized concepts applicable to real situations across the board. When we take calculus on a fast college pace, we barely have the time to do the calculations of seemingly strange ideas that we never fully understand and articulate. Professor Leonard provokes your doubts and curiosity to question the degree of what once you took for granted even if you aced the material. As a biology major I was told to "just take statistics" so I never learned more calculus. After scouting a bunch of different research areas including computational biology and biophysics, I realized I wanted to do more quantitative work. Sadly, I didn't have the background to do so. Since realizing this, I purchased Early Transcendentals by James Stewart and found your UA-cam. Using your lectures as resource, I essentially relearned Calculus 1 and all the pre-calculus I had forgotten, Calculus 2, and now Calculus 3. I am fascinated by this stuff and wish I found it earlier (vector fields are way too cool bro). I'm going to use the next 2 months before my phd to try to speed run diff-eq and linear as best I can. I wish I had more time for this because math is genuinely awesome. Your youtube channel opened my eyes to math, and taught me that I can learn. However, I realize now that I know so little. Hopefully I can make time in the future to dig even deeper.

@@huanglinwan7075 If you are looking for some introductory Linear Algebra material then I can recommend "Linear Algebra And Its Applications" by David C. Lay. That book is easy to read, and very intuitive, and it immediately starts with showing how you can use matrices to easily solve systems of linear equations. There is also an optional section early in the book that even shows how matrices can be used to balance chemical equations, which I found really useful when I studied chemistry.
Legend. Words can't describe how much you've interested me into mathematics. From not understanding basic algebra to understanding all this. You're a phenomenal teacher and I thank you for inspiring me and countless others to enjoy mathematics.
Your last lecture on Greens theorem made me love math again. I have my calc 3 final tomorrow and whether or not I do well, I am so glad to have discovered you. Started the journey one year ago without even knowing the definition of calculus and now it has come to an end. I'm no longer afraid of calculus, battling with calculus also gave me a confidence boost for any math course in general and it is all thanks to you Professor Leonard. I didn't take math in 3 years but I needed calc 3 to graduate, all my friends finished and I signed up for a class where the professor didn't do a good job at teaching. I was alone and had no one to help so I failed my first calc 3 test in a horrible fashion. after that first test I felt like I was legitimately dumb and would not be able to pass calc 3 . I panicked and my anxiety started getting the best of me until I found your videos. I spent ever single mon-fri watching these videos working on all problems along side of you. I went back to other playlist to catch up, I relearned calc 1 , calc 2 and calc3 all because of you. from a failed first test to passing every other test I have only the final left. Recall : d[ u ( x )* y] / dx = u ( x ) * dy / dx + y * du / dx ( eq. 1 ) Now for a differential equation such as : dy / dx + P ( x ) * y = Q ( x ) ( eq. 2 ) and multiplying this equation by u ( x ) : u ( x ) * dy / dx + u ( x ) * P ( x ) * y = u ( x ) * Q ( x ) (eq. 3 ) the only difference between the top line ( eq. 1 ) and ( eq. 3 ) is what is multiplying y, therefore : du / dx = u ( x) * P ( x ) du / u = P ( x ) dx ln u = int [ P ( x ) dx ] u ( x ) = e^[ int P ( x ) dx ] after that it is easy to simplify and solve for.
@@michaelempeigne3519 That's no. No. That's one type of very simple ordinary different equation of first order. It only works for a very specific case. That's equivalent to saying "Integration? That's easy. The only thing you need to know is increase the power on your polynominal by 1 and divide by the new number. Next add a c as a constant of integration. That's it. Calculus 2 is easy." (one case/technique out of about 20 you need to know) There's about 20-30 types of differential equations of different orders, etc you need to learn to solve in a DE course.
So incredible. I watched the beginning and ending top this video back when I started calc 1, and wondered how amazing the class must be that it warranted a round of applause. I wish I knew how valuable your resources were at the beginning of my multivariable calculus class. Rather than jamming through hundreds of problems, not to pick up anything, and feeling frustrated, you describe your concepts cleanly, clearly, and beautifully. The series of three-hour videos, ironically, has saved me time.
Your lectures are superb. I took up calc with little prior knowledge beyond basic diff/integration rules because a) it's beautiful and b) necessary for higher science. I've been teaching myself for 5 months. The multivariable stuff got really hard, but I want it for fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, Maxwell's equations, and eventually harder stuff like tensors for relativity. I'm here, and it's all making great sense through your explanations. The internet has changed education in so many ways and there are some fantastic resources and teachers out there. Your teaching is inspiring and the comments confirm there are many of us outside of your classroom getting a lot out of this. I'm addicted to math now - you're partly to blame. Keep inspiring!
what if they dont give you a function of z ? What if they give you a sphere only? What if they give you something like x + 2y +3z = 1 What is your g(x) ??
Solve for Z and there is your function of Z. If they give you a sphere do the same thing solve for Z. x^2+y^2+z^2=1 solve for z which would give you the square root of x^2-y^2+1. The question must define if its in the positive or negative side, so you don't remove half of your sphere when you take a square root.
I could have taken the time to write you a personal email, but I ultimately came to the conclusion that it be best for the public to read this. Professor Leonard. You are the definition of a hero. I have yet to find another individual in higher education as passionate and dedicated as you. I hope you understand that all credit I received in my Calculus courses, is due to your hard work and selfless service. When I started taking Calculus in college I had a really bad time; I didn't understand, I had bad grades, and stressed up to the top. But it was not until you appeared like an angel that things started to get better. With your incredible skills to teach, your patience, and last but not least, your sense of humor, I finally started to master Calculus. My grades got up and ended passing Calculus 3 with an A, which is something I never thought to achieve. A subject that once was a nightmare for me, became a subject to which I developed affection and interest. On behalf of all students, I want to thank you for your job as a teacher and your voluntary decision to share it with the rest of the world. Although it is free, once I start working I am sure I'm going to be back and make the donation you deserve. I'm waiting for videos like this to replace lectures; professors can exist to have office hours and answer questions like they do and they have more time for research. No need for thousands of professors to separately teach the same things that one person can do very well.

I don't think I've ever seen a professor work so hard to ensure that his/her students actually understand what the hell they are doing as much as this man. So many professors will just give you the formulas and breeze past the concepts especially in many math and science courses. This is not to say that they don't know their stuff, but rather sometimes it seems like alot of professors don't do enough coverage of concepts. Professor Leonard's teaching is by far the best I have ever seen. Clear, concise, intuitive; his lectures have everything a top quality lecture needs to have. Thank you Professor Leonard for sharing these videos with the world. :)

A lot of professors don't actually care about the students, they just stand and half-heartedly cover a bunch of material and then they are like "okay, job done here, now I can go back to my research".
It's extremely obvious almost immediately when a teacher has that attitude.
They are those "serious", formal and apathetic types who just stand there and mumble almost to themselves throughout the entire lecture and never interact with the students.
Basically the complete opposite of Professor Leonard in every way.

I've never failed or even came close to failing a math course until Calc3. Had 40% on my midterms and needed 60% on my finals to scrape by with a D.
I binge watched all of the second part of Calc3 on your channel in 3 days and I got 93% on my finals!

It is 1/21/2024 at 5:44 PM as I'm typing this. I started this course on 7/24/2023, and I had to take a break starting from early September until mid-December because I got busy with my semester. I picked it back up again after the semester ended, and I have just finished this lecture. My amazing teacher in high school who taught me Honors Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus BC used to assign us your videos during the quarantine 3 years ago while she was taking care of her mother in a different state since she had gotten sick from COVID. I got a 5 on my AP Calculus BC exam, and I'd like to partly thank you for that, because your lectures helped me while my teacher was taking care of her mother. As a result, I haven't had to take Calculus I nor Calculus II in college. I really loved your lectures back then, and I could tell that your style of teaching had influenced hers too, which I think is part of the reason why she was so great.
I'm currently a Computer Science major and I have not had the chance to take Calculus III at my university yet, but I see references made to it everywhere, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and taught myself using this course. I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for putting these quality lectures on UA-cam FOR FREE! I understand Calculus III quite well now, although some more practice problems could definitely help, so I will do those in my own time. As for the concepts, I really appreciate how you explain them and it truly helps me understand it on an intuitive level. You make math so fun and engaging to learn. I've had many teachers in the past who create such a desolate and bleak atmosphere in their math classes. When I started Calculus III I wasn't sure if I was going to pass my class because I failed my first exam. My situation was similar to the one that Noel Robles had. It took me hours to finish my homework and I was frustrated because I didn't understand the material. Nevertheless, I found your videos just in time because at the end I managed to get A in calculus III, something that seemed impossible when I first started (wish I had found these videos when I was taking calculus I, my life would have been a lot easier). I just finished my Calculus III final exam, without your informative and well organized videos there is no way I would have been able to do as well as I did. My online class officially consisted of reading the textbook, watching five minute videos my professor posted, and then doing a five problem assignment. So much in fact that I came dangerously close to getting kicked out for failing higher math 2 (differential calc, integral calc, and analysis combined) three times. I took to studying your videos and actively working on the problems you present. Your aptitude for explaining incredibly complex abstract mathematical models and principles in an understandable and logical way is incredibly impressive. My mathematics professors, who's titles are longer than the rest of their names, seem to have zero ability to speak outside the boundaries of mathematical jargon, leaving many student like myself scratching their heads and failing exams. In the end I passed my exam and am well on my way to finishing my bachelors degree, something I may well not have accomplished without your help. So danke schön and keep up the good work. Though my course ends with Green's Theorem, I came to this video at the end of my 6-week summer Calc III course to express my gratitude for this incredible collection of lectures. My course was asynchronous without any lectures, meaning I was left with a textbook and the internet to teach me Calculus III. Fortunately, the professor overseeing the course knew about these lectures and linked them to our course page. For the past 6 weeks, I have watched 1-2 of these lectures a day and then worked on homework as I watched Professor Leonard work through examples.
I came across lectures this channel during Calc I last fall (2023), and it has been invaluable in aiding me on concepts where I required further instruction. Having taken a class taught solely by Professor Leonard, I can confidently say that this man is an absolutely incredible instructor. I did not need any further instruction, as Professor Leonard explains these concepts wonderfully. Professor Leonard, thank you for your help over the past year (When I took Calc I) and if you have any thoughts of doing a lecture series for Differential Equations or Linear Algebra, know that those would be greatly appreciated by all!
My calculus 3 course was going a bit too slow for my taste, so over the course of about 3 weeks, i sat down and spent about 5-7 hours a day watching your lectures, taking down all the notes possible and working all the examples, and I have finally concluded this long and compact journey with big ole' stack of about 150-200 pages of calculus and now understand calculus better than I ever have before. There's no way I could thank you for this video series. You've become an inspiration to how I want to teach others one day.

I was doing horribly in the first few units of my current multivariable calculus class, and I thought that I was going on a downhill slope towards just not understanding the class at all and barely passing. I nearly failed my first exam, but after finding your videos, I recently got a near perfect score on my second exam! Sincerely -> thank you for providing these fantastic lectures. Despite graduating from college last year, I had only taken up to Calculus 1. As a biology major I was told to "just take statistics" so I never learned more calculus. After scouting a bunch of different research areas including computational biology and biophysics, I realized I wanted to do more quantitative work. Sadly, I didn't have the background to do so. Since realizing this, I purchased Early Transcendentals by James Stewart and found your UA-cam. Using your lectures as resource, I essentially relearned Calculus 1 and all the pre-calculus I had forgotten, Calculus 2, and now Calculus 3. I am fascinated by this stuff and wish I found it earlier (vector fields are way too cool bro). I'm going to use the next 2 months before my phd to try to speed run diff-eq and linear as best I can. I wish I had more time for this because math is genuinely awesome. Your youtube channel opened my eyes to math, and taught me that I can learn. However, I realize now that I know so little. Hopefully I can make time in the future to dig even deeper.

If you are looking for some introductory Linear Algebra material then I can recommend "Linear Algebra And Its Applications" by David C. Lay.
That book is easy to read, and very intuitive, and it immediately starts with showing how you can use matrices to easily solve systems of linear equations.
There is also an optional section early in the book that even shows how matrices can be used to balance chemical equations, which I found really useful when I studied chemistry.
Legend. Words can't describe how much you've interested me into mathematics. From not understanding basic algebra to understanding all this. You're a phenomenal teacher and I thank you for inspiring me and countless others to enjoy mathematics.

I didn't take math in 3 years but I needed calc 3 to graduate, all my friends finished and I signed up for a class where the professor didn't do a good job at teaching. I was alone and had no one to help so I failed my first calc 3 test in a horrible fashion. after that first test I felt like I was legitimately dumb and would not be able to pass calc 3 . I panicked and my anxiety started getting the best of me until I found your videos. I spent ever single mon-fri watching these videos working on all problems along side of you. I went back to other playlist to catch up, I relearned calc 1 , calc 2 and calc3 all because of you. from a failed first test to passing every other test I have only the final left. You gave me spark and tools I needed when I was most lost and id like to thank you for that. A true hero

linear differential equations are easy to solve. The idea is to find a function y which satisfies the differential equation.
Recall : d[ u ( x )* y] / dx = u ( x ) * dy / dx + y * du / dx ( eq. 1 )
Now for a differential equation such as :
dy / dx + P ( x ) * y = Q ( x ) ( eq. 2 )
and multiplying this equation by u ( x ) :
u ( x ) * dy / dx + u ( x ) * P ( x ) * y = u ( x ) * Q ( x ) (eq. 3 )
the only difference between the top line ( eq. 1 ) and ( eq. 3 ) is what is multiplying y, therefore :
du / dx = u ( x) * P ( x )
du / u = P ( x ) dx
ln u = int [ P ( x ) dx ]
u ( x ) = e^[ int P ( x ) dx ]
after that it is easy to simplify and solve for.

@@michaelempeigne3519 That's no. No. That's one type of very simple ordinary different equation of first order. It only works for a very specific case. That's equivalent to saying "Integration? That's easy. The only thing you need to know is increase the power on your polynominal by 1 and divide by the new number. Next add a c as a constant of integration. That's it. Calculus 2 is easy." (one case/technique out of about 20 you need to know)
There's about 20-30 types of differential equations of different orders, etc you need to learn to solve in a DE course.
So incredible. I watched the beginning and ending top this video back when I started calc 1, and wondered how amazing the class must be that it warranted a round of applause. I wish I knew how valuable your resources were at the beginning of my multivariable calculus class. Rather than jamming through hundreds of problems, not to pick up anything, and feeling frustrated, you describe your concepts cleanly, clearly, and beautifully. The series of three-hour videos, ironically, has saved me time.

Your lectures are superb. I took up calc with little prior knowledge beyond basic diff/integration rules because a) it's beautiful and b) necessary for higher science. I've been teaching myself for 5 months. The multivariable stuff got really hard, but I want it for fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, Maxwell's equations, and eventually harder stuff like tensors for relativity. I'm here, and it's all making great sense through your explanations.
The internet has changed education in so many ways and there are some fantastic resources and teachers out there. Your teaching is inspiring and the comments confirm there are many of us outside of your classroom getting a lot out of this. I'm addicted to math now - you're partly to blame. Keep inspiring!
what if they dont give you a function of z ? What if they give you a sphere only?
What if they give you something like x + 2y +3z = 1 What is your g(x) ??

Solve for Z and there is your function of Z. If they give you a sphere do the same thing solve for Z. x^2+y^2+z^2=1 solve for z which would give you the square root of x^2-y^2+1. The question must define if its in the positive or negative side, so you don't remove half of your sphere when you take a square root.
