Thanks Will, great tip! Just had a go and it works great! This is going to be super useful for group photos or shooting couples. Thanks so much. Only point worth mentioning is that you have to set the focus ring to control focus, it you set it to control exposure compensation for example, then turning the focus ring and back button AF button will not activate peaking....which I think is the right approach by Nikon.
@Shaun it aint working for me for some reason, with or without the button. Im using ftz adapter for an f type lens. It works on manual mode but otherwise the focus ring is locked by the motor :/
Great tip. Anyone having trouble getting this to work, be sure that you have peaking enabled ( Custom Settings > Shooting Display > d10 Peaking Highlights). Don't know why Peaking isn't under Autofocus in Custom Settings, but that gripe is for another day.
Great tip! Don't know if you've mentioned this in any video but another good way of quickly checking focus is by assigning 400% magnification to the "record"-button when shooting stills. Or any other magnification you might desire.
Hi Will, thank you very much for your great tip! To my knowledge, you are running the only UA-cam channel which goes in such a great detail about how the Nikon Z system really works in the real world (and by the way it is what it matters the most: PRACTICAL recommendations). I have just done what you said with the focus peaking and the back button focus in AFC mode with my Nikon Z7 and the Nikkor Z 24 mm f/1.8 S. So, I can confirm that it works perfectly well with the Nikon Z7.
I just got the Z6 a couple of weeks ago and a just the other day I stumbled onto this focus peeking trick. I thought it was a flute. Thanks for validating it.
Works with shutter focus too. So I can press the back button or press the shutter down halfway, the peaking shows up when I spin the focus ring either way. Thanks, great tip I didnt know about.
Great video and helpful. I have unsharp images during landscape photography. No parts are 100% sharp. The AF-S show green light, but may be the focus is on structure which is far away and focus is therefore not 100% perfect.
To go even further, i have assigned the "video record" button to 100% zoom when in Photo mode. Now I can easily not only adjust my focus manually when needed, but also do it in 100% resolution without the need to play with "+" and "-" buttons
Awesome tip Will, thank you so much. I used to use focus peaking in live view on my D850 for some landscape work or anything not fast action and loved it. But this is even better not having to go into a menu and turn it on, I can’t wait to try it. My Z6 will be here tomorrow, can’t wait to try it out.
Heck yeah Eric you’re going to love it. I can’t explain how easy it integrates into my normal workflow now that I don’t have to take the time to flip the switch to manual! I’m going to do a full video on how I set up my Z6 this week so that will help give you a good starting place once you get yours. Happy shooting my man!
The Monochrome Memoirs Oh Awesome, I can’t wait to see your recommended setup. I already saw the autofocusing tips you gave us for setup. Much appreciated, love you channel buddy keep it up.
Yeah I heard you talk about this in an earlier episode and immediately checked it out on the z7. Really fabulous tip, who knew? Thanks so much for sharing all you’re learning about these Nikon cameras, please keep it coming.
Amazine tip. I just tried it and worked great. Been having AF issues with the Z6ii and used this plus how you set up the menu system for G5 and A3. Priceless man.
Heck yeah that was helpful thank you so much. I am shooting my daughter's wedding this weekend so any extra tip that i wasn't aware of is totally welcome. I will be shooting in black and white as well to give her more options when she chooses her photos. I am shooting with the Z6 but i am nervous as heck 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏🙏 I've done other weddings but is not my profession i just love photography. Thank you for your great videos
Fantastic game changing advice for a newbie photographer! Working like a charm on my Z6 and my AF-S lenses on the FTZ adapter, manual shooting has never been this easy!
FYI - YES, the trick works on my Z7 - VERY helpful! Just put the 85mm F1.8 S lens on the camera, intend to use it for vehicle “portraits,” razor-sharp focus is a must!
I was excited to hear you say that you can just turn the focus ring slightly and highlight peaking will kick on. It didn't work when I tried it. But, I'm using AF-S glass with he FTZ adapter. Do you think this trick is specific to the S lenses?
Im having the same issue with mine as well. Using the FTZ adapter. To get around this problem I flip the af/Mf switch on the lens and presto, peaking highlights appear. Then switch back to af and take the shot
The Monochrome Memoirs definitely bro. I love what you’re doing here. Hopefully you never stop the interaction with your audience I think this makes your channel different and better in many ways.
Fabulous tip! Was wondering why the peaking came on indiscriminately. Also didn’t realize you could set your EVF and screen to B&W. Going to do that pronto!
When you grab the focus wheel you override the autofocus system and switch to manual focus, that’s why the focus-assist comes in. You might obviously change the focus plane by turning the wheel, not only check...
Correct but it does not take you out of your focus mode into MF, that’s why this is helpful. As soon as you release and hit the BBF again you are back in your original focus mode
Thank you so much for this tip 😊👍..I am about to buy the Z6 and I am definitely gonna use this on my two old canon lenses - FD 28mm 2.8sc and FD 50mm1.8, which I used for my canon a1 way back...😆
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Thanks. I was not sure if this works with or without BBF enabled. I myself don't use BBF, tried it but didn't like, or maybe it's just my laziness to learn and use something different.
Thanks for this great information. One of my big challenges is getting accurate focus making super-macro images underwater. Depth of field is very narrow. I thought I would have to switch into manual focus mode. Going to try this with my underwater rig today.

The Monochrome Memoirs To be fair I’ve had more cameras and lenses crap out on me while working than cards and they were old cf cards. I think you might be right mate. Saying that, 2 or 3 z6’s a few native primes along with adapted zooms would be a nice setup, a lot lighter too!
You are absolutely right my friend. We have a MUCH higher chance that a camera will crap out and wipe our cards than XQDs going corrupt. Sony stated they had 1 XQD failure out of the first 1,000,000. Fantastic tip, love it! Very practical and usefull. It works great with ftz adapter and my nikon lenses like 24-70 2.8. unfortunately it do not work with nikon mount lens like my sigma art 35 1.4 or the 50mm. I cannot find out how to. Thanks again!
whoa - how did I **NOT** know this before? Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this... love your videos and your tips (coming from an enthusiast shooter way over in Singapore :)
Plz do a Z 24-70 F4 vs Tamron 24-70 G2 on Z6/7 please. I am planning to buy the Z6 and want to buy a 35mm prime. And I am thinking if I should sell off my Tamron G2 and get the Z F4 lens and use the rest of the money to go for a 35mm Sigma. Plz help!
Hey bud I don’t own either of those lenses right now but I have owned the 24-70 f/4s when it first came out. It’s a phenomenal lens. I would recommend you incorporate as many S lenses as you can into your workflow as they are made to be used with the Z cameras. Hope this helps!
The Monochrome Memoirs I have been doing photography for the last 8 months. I must have taken about 12k shitty shots. But, I am trying. I work in advertising and I feel photography is an emotional outlet for me. It could perhaps also be another way I could earn a bit of money down the road. I first bought the D5600. Then I bought the 750 and gave the 5600 to my gf who is very happy with it for its brighter colours. I noticed that the 750 is impacting my photography from a compositional point of view because how the focus points are clustered in the middle. I don't like to focus and recompose. The focus point spread of D5600 wasn't that bad. But that one struggles in low light! I kind of feel that Z6 solves that problem for me and opens up video too. But the problem is when I am thinking of buying the Z6, I don't feel like selling off the 750 either! It's just so good! And it's new just 8.5k clicks! But it also means blocking that money in the 750 too. Now I have this in my kit: Tamron 70-300 F4 to f5.6. Nikon 85 1.8G. Nikon 50mm 1.8G. Tamron 24-70 G2. Nikon 35mm 1.8G DX (for the 5600). I want to explore all kinds of photography except wildlife. I Iearnt about the real quality of lenses from your videos and I want those qualities in the kit I am trying to build. Minimal and high quality. Now, should I sell of the 5600? Should I keep the 750 or let it go! Do I carry around that heavy 24-70 G2? Or go for a Z 24-70 S and buy a good 35mm prime to go with my 85mm etc? I have these questions but I am afraid I don't KNOW ENOUGH to answer them...
you said you can change the color of the peaking? how do you happen do do that? Btw this is a sweet feature and I'm gonna try this out as soon as I get home. Got the z6ii this past Sunday and have been learning a great deal in part to you! Keep up the good work.
Where is the review video on the 50-250? How about an updated video on the focusing/lag/etc. after the firmware updates since your last review? I just one, really like it, and I'm coming over from a D500 with mid-level DX glass. I still prefer my DX glass over the kit glass (both lenses) on the Z50. Other than the size... 20 or 24mm compact prime Z lens would make me really happy, only a 28mm on the map though, DOH!
Just noticed your comment after I added above that I don't use backbutton focus but, as our host says, peaking can be used while focussing with the shutter release.
The benefits of back button focus in AF-C. There’s a lot of info out there on this, but the short version is that it gives you the best of AF-S and AF-C at once. If you want to track focus, you just keep your finger on the back button and press the shutter when you want a frame. Nothing special. The beauty is for locking focus (for example if you want to focus and recompose). You hit the back button to focus, the take your finger off to “lock focus”. Recompose to put your subject where you want it in the frame. Then press the shutter without hitting the back button. In this instance pressing the shutter won’t change focus and your subject remains in focus. It takes a bit of practice, but after a short while you don’t even notice what your thumb is doing.
Matt Grant I have used it before but went away from it. I set my back button for Ae lock and use it the same way, especially on back lit shots. I lock the exposure, recompose and shoot.
I know what I will be trying when I get home. Was having a hard time with autofocus grabbing the snow instead of the face when I was out this weekend, I wonder if this would have helped. I ended up popping it into single point and telling were to focus like I used to do on the D7200.
This DEFINITELY would have and that situation is exactly where I would’ve used something like this. It’s so nice to have the override always available WITH peaking to boot. Hard to miss a shot with that combo especially once you get fast with it
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs another point on this, one of the reasons I went mirrorless is my vision has never been good and it's only getting worse. I love focus peaking for manual focus and now I can use it for auto to make sure it's pulling where I want! Sorry this just hit me. 🤣 It's been a long day.
Same here! My vision sucks and this camera now allows me to shoot the old manual focus lenses with gray accuracy because of the peaking. Absolute game changer!
Great tip thanks!! But just a note.. most lenses today have manual F override ( like a focus clutch) so you can push and pull focus like you indicated.. I tried with all my lenses and it works fine.. all but one.. A 105mm DG HSM by sigma.. with this lens the motor is constantly engaged and trying to move the focus ring can force the motor.. I got here looking for front focus issues with the Z6,, I am noticing some front focusing when eye auto f is selected.. the overlay shows the eye in focus but the actual file shows a bit of front focusing.. at 1.8 or 1.4 is very noticeable... have you experience any issue?
You said something real quick during the live demo. I just want to make sure I heard you right. Do you set your OVF to b/w and have the peeking set to yellow? Please say it again. Great tip!
I shoot in all monochrome on all my cameras because it allows me to see light and shadows more clearly. To me when you add the extra layer of color it can distract you from focusing more on your light and composition. I speak about this in a few videos of mine you should definitely check them out! I shoot in RAW so all the color is maintained in the raw file but what I actually see when I’m shooting is BW
I have a Nikon Z6, I find that shooting indoors with a F-mount 50mm prime, in low light situations, the camera struggles to focus, I am using single point autofocus.
Hi Will Great informative video!! I believe in the video you said you normally have it set on black and white. Is that you can see the shadows, mid tones, and highlights better? Also when you're shooting do you normally use the EVF to view the subject or do you use the LCD screen? Best wishes Duane
Hey Duane! Yes thats correct, BW just enables me to discern between light and shadows more easily. In reference to your second question id say im composing with the back screen 80% of the time. I love it!
Hi sir I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it? Will you please help me for it? TIA
Question do you actually wait for the box to turn green the shoot or you just sweep to validate what’s in focus I apologize in advance for if it’s already answered or is too novice of a question. I appreciate all that you do.
Can you focus peak on the Z 50 while using video, I ask because I was trying to capture a video of Saturn with my Z 50 through my telescope and it wasn't horrible but I think I could have focused a bit better but needed focus peaking..
Hey Moe! Once the lights go down on the dancefloor we are most always in dynamic AF or large area. When we have plenty of light or decent light we use dynamic or face tracking. Face tracking eye AF work excellent when there’s enough light
@@SunilThakkar Fair point. But I'm mostly a video guy, so I'm used to peaking on all the time while also keeping a second eye on the audio levels and a third eye on exposure. :D
I have the Nikon z50 and I ha e had some trouble getting sharp images. One out of every three photos is out of focus. I had a similar issue on my nikon d3500, but it turn out the lens I was using was just very slow at focus. I'm not sure what i can do to adjust, I've zoom in while shooting to check focus and all seem alright but when I get the photos out of the camera there is a blurr. I shoot with a strobe 1/200 iso 100 aperture 7.1 focusing on the subject eye. Any thoughts?
Just want to say that I LOVE your videos. I’ve recently purchased a Z7. I know you’re focusing more on the Z6/50, but wanted to mention that I’m noticing that I can’t get sharp focus with high ISO’s. WTH?!
Thanks, that’s a big helper 🙏👍. Is there also such a hint for making the zoomed in AF help jumps automatically back to full view without pressing that - button I never find when my eye is sky EVF
@@devilinyourbackyard Strange, I have an 18-200 3.5-5.6G that does not shew the peaking. My other lenses do. It might be that I am on an older firmware.
Normally when it says something like HUGE tip bla bla bla“ in the title it’s more often than not just click bait and only minor interesting stuff. But this! How does Nikon not promote this feature?? Thanks so much for pointing it out!
I use to do this on my a73, I was wondering how to do it on the z6, I never thought to try while pressing the AF-on button. Now if we could find a way to use dynamic area or EYE AF without switching modes.
@@TheMonochromeMemoirs Will just ask here, since it is talk about dynamic area. Isn't AF-C single point more accurate than AF-C dynamic? If for example you would like to focus on eye? Just thinking...never tested it yet.
As i saw, when you rotate the ring the focus plane is moving. Will you loose your focus plane position, If you stop touching the ring but still continue pressing BBF?
Nope! When you move the focus ring while holding BBF it disables the focus motors. To re-activate them you need to release BBF then press BBF again Hope this helps!
Thanks Will, great tip! Just had a go and it works great! This is going to be super useful for group photos or shooting couples. Thanks so much. Very true! I will pin this comment so people know. Excellent contribution my friend!
Thanks, I was wondering why it wasn't working over here. Great tip Will! Also confirmed for Z7
This works by just grabbing the focus ring in any focus mode. Im doing it right now on my Z50. No extra button pressing is necessary

Great tip. Anyone having trouble getting this to work, be sure that you have peaking enabled ( Custom Settings > Shooting Display > d10 Peaking Highlights). Don't know why Peaking isn't under Autofocus in Custom Settings, but that gripe is for another day.

6:10 is where it starts.
Wow
I own the Z6 for 6 months now and I have no idea that I could do this. HUGE thumbs up to you. Does it work with F lenses and the FTZ adaptor?
Yes it certainly does my friend!
you said you can change the color of the peaking? how do you happen do do that? Btw this is a sweet feature and I'm gonna try this out as soon as I get home. Got the z6ii this past Sunday and have been learning a great deal in part to you! Keep up the good work.
Very helpful, this makes it much easier. Thanks a lot for this video.
Glad this helped!
I had no idea this was there. Thanks so much for the info. VERY useful!
Glad this helped Andy!
That’s assuming you’re using back button focus. I’ve use it before but didn’t stick with it. Please explain the benefits.
Not necessarily. You can still use the shutter release as your AF activation but the back button has to be set to AF ON.
Hope this helps!
Super helpful tip. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for watching Christoph!
This was really helpful thanks! Looking forward to your opinion how the 50-250 lens performs. Also thinking to get that 50mm 1.8s to the z50.
Wow! Super amazing find! Thanks!
Thanks for another great tip.
Thanks for the support Jamie!
Wow..... that was an awesome tip..... thank you ..... love this channel
Glad you found this useful my friend!
Massive thumbs up Will. Can I just ask do you always find the focus peaking accurate?
Glad this helped! I do find it accurate but it will take some practice to get quick with it for sure
You said something real quick during the live demo. I just want to make sure I heard you right. Do you set your OVF to b/w and have the peeking set to yellow? Please say it again.
Great tip!
Hey Matt!
Yes my EVF is set to BW and peaking highlights are set to yellow
So capture in color. EVF to b/w? What is the benefit?
I shoot in all monochrome on all my cameras because it allows me to see light and shadows more clearly. To me when you add the extra layer of color it can distract you from focusing more on your light and composition. I speak about this in a few videos of mine you should definitely check them out!
I shoot in RAW so all the color is maintained in the raw file but what I actually see when I’m shooting is BW
The Monochrome Memoirs super interesting.
I have a Nikon Z6, I find that shooting indoors with a F-mount 50mm prime, in low light situations, the camera struggles to focus, I am using single point autofocus.
Hi Will
Great informative video!!
I believe in the video you said you normally have it set on black and white.
Is that you can see the shadows, mid tones, and highlights better?
Also when you're shooting do you normally use the EVF to view the subject or do you use the LCD screen?
Best wishes
Duane
Hey Duane!
Yes thats correct, BW just enables me to discern between light and shadows more easily. In reference to your second question id say im composing with the back screen 80% of the time. I love it!
Always helpful videos!
Thanks for watching Walter!
I dont think this works on Z50, am trying it right now and it doesn't do anything no focus peaking.
wow maestro, thank you so much . Never seen somethink like that in 30 years. amuzing.
Hi sir
I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it? Will you please help me for it?
TIA
Wow: Excellent practical advice; will try this technique. Thanks so muich.
Glad this helped my friend!
Works on half press on the shutter button too.
Very Helpful and Thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching Michael. Glad this helped!
Question do you actually wait for the box to turn green the shoot or you just sweep to validate what’s in focus I apologize in advance for if it’s already answered or is too novice of a question. I appreciate all that you do.
Awesome tip! Thank you !
Thanks for watching!
Yes it is working. Truly hidden trick.
It's a great tip but I can't get this to work on my z50. When I press and hold button and turn focus wheel it focuses out
this is a really excellent tip
Can you focus peak on the Z 50 while using video, I ask because I was trying to capture a video of Saturn with my Z 50 through my telescope and it wasn't horrible but I think I could have focused a bit better but needed focus peaking..
During your event shooting or portrait shoot do you use that large area AF or do you use face /eye AF?
Hey Moe! Once the lights go down on the dancefloor we are most always in dynamic AF or large area. When we have plenty of light or decent light we use dynamic or face tracking. Face tracking eye AF work excellent when there’s enough light
The Monochrome Memoirs thanks for the reply ! I am also still hoping to see the new 70-200 2.8 soon ! Will you be investing in it ?
Moe Alyasini no problem! Yes I will be pre ordering as soon as it’s announced for sure
Yep, using the same tip more and more!
It’s an awesome feature!
Great video. Wouldn't it better to have an option for full-time focus peaking?
I think it’s quite distracting to have it on full time... this is more of a manual focus over ride...
Hi Will! Experiment, please with new DX 50-250mm lens with Z6 as well. That would be very helpful to know. Both video and photo.
Sure will Alex!
Great video as usual! Thank you
Thank you for watching Susy!
Really great tip, Will!
Just want to say that I LOVE your videos. I’ve recently purchased a Z7. I know you’re focusing more on the Z6/50, but wanted to mention that I’m noticing that I can’t get sharp focus with high ISO’s. WTH?!
Thanks for the compliment and support Judi!
Is this also at decent shutter speeds? Also, AF S or C?
2 ?s. Do you use dynamic focusing most of the time? Do you shoot weddings in B&W?
Thanks, that’s a big helper 🙏👍. Is there also such a hint for making the zoomed in AF help jumps automatically back to full view without pressing that - button I never find when my eye is sky EVF
Thank you for sharing the tip. Will this work on Z5?
Yes works on all Z cameras.
Hey Will, I was wondering if you could do a video on editing pictures in monochrome sometime?
Oh shit that’s brilliant! Should using the FTZ affect that? I still have all F glass right now.
That’s a great question, give me a minute and I’ll test it!
Just checked on the 85 G and yes it works great with the FTZ!
Wow. That's just outstanding
@@devilinyourbackyard Strange, I have an 18-200 3.5-5.6G that does not shew the peaking. My other lenses do. It might be that I am on an older firmware.
Thank you so much for this tip! What a big help!
That's really very helpful to me! Thank you very much!
Normally when it says something like HUGE tip bla bla bla“ in the title it’s more often than not just click bait and only minor interesting stuff. But this! How does Nikon not promote this feature?? Thanks so much for pointing it out!
Lmao! So true but you won’t get that on this channel!
I was using that on my D850 since z6/7 were even announced
Awesome!
I use to do this on my a73, I was wondering how to do it on the z6, I never thought to try while pressing the AF-on button. Now if we could find a way to use dynamic area or EYE AF without switching modes.
Man wouldn’t that just be the cherry on top! I really hope Nikon watches these videos and we get that soon haha
To re-activate them you need to release BBF then press BBF again
Hope this helps!
