Chabrier's Trois Valses Romantiques first premiered in 1883 at the Société National de Musique. One year later, Debussy won the Prix de Rome and traveled to the Villa Medici to study. He hated his time at the Villa Medici, but he would play Trois Valses Romantiques in his spare time to relieve stress.
Most enjoyable, making a convincing job of some tricky writing,(sometimes i think Chabrier was having a big laugh on his players),and bringing out both the eccentric and the lyrical character.

Quite right, two pianos! A common mistake of terminology. And, agreed, very spirited playing of pieces surprisingly difficult to bring off.
