- The Sharingan was introduced as the "Mirror eye". Kakashi copied over 1000 jutsus during his ninja career gaining the nickname of Copy Ninja. However, even though we see Kakashi copying abilities in the Kakashi vs Zabuza, Kakashi vs Itachi, Kakashi vs Kisame, Sasuke vs Rock Lee, this ability vanishes from the Naruto series, especially in Naruto Shippuden.
So in this video we will find out why the Sharingan stopped copying jutsus. Kakashi never used the Sharingan to copy a jutsu again, Madara, Obito, Itachi, and even Sasuke never used that Sharingan ability in Naruto Shippuden, so let's find out the in and out of universe reasons.

If something is to blame, is the weekly serialization model... that doesn't give the proper time for ideas to mature... With the power of HINDSIGHT I believe it would be a better choice that the Mangekyou should be the power to copy Kekkei Genkai... with the limitation that the number of jutsu would be limited by the tomoe...
It would work kinda well with Itachi since as an Anbu he would be sent against very powerful clans and had time to copy Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi and Susano'o... and if needed the rule could be bent to the number of tomoe in each eye... or better yet... instead of a pattern unique to each user the eye pattern change for each jutsu! As it would double as a means to cover for the lack of hand seals as the series went along...
And if you can add to his backstory as a good guy instead of killing entire clans and stealing the jutsu... These could be clans already ruined by the war and remaining leaders just confide these jutsu to Itachi for a motive or another... I can see the Gaidens write themselves... Sasuke got the same jutsu cause Itachi enabled him through their last fight... and Madara had Hashirama cells so he could bypass the limitations with ease... every other mangekyou user would have unique jutsu because their own history and fights... Even jutsu that would depend on special body modification could work if the special body modification could be achieved with genjutsu or even the henge no jutsu...
Kakashi's role with his thousand jutsu would be to beat awesome Kekkei Genkai using a insane combination of mundane jutsu. You could even throw in a gag that more than 700 of these are cheap jutsu that he copied unwilling and this would be another reason why he covers his sharingan...
But again time was of the utmost essence... and the video itself denoted how creating unique situations to be surpassed by unique jutsu never before mentioned could be unjust passed as cheap writing...
There's editor Yahagi role but I lack proper data about it...
And the notion that a character needs to be iconic and do things only he/she/it can do... the less things the better you can use the few you have... Surpassing unique situations with fewer tools is a commonplace better writing in this trade... Although to be honest the extreme opposite ends is GT's kamehameha solves anything... the Rasengan spam and Sakura being a healer when Naruto has good regeneration...

Chakra isn't stamina. Most people can only use one element and using another one surely takes more chakra, like using the sharingan as a non-uchiha...
Most of the jutsu were usless anyway lol. The most used jutsu in the series the fire ball jutsu didnt even kill a single person. many were killed by kunai's and swords.

@@justbethinking I mean this was true even in part 1. Like take Shino for example. You can't...copy any of his jutsus that use the bugs...without the bugs. Same for all of Kiba's jutsus, which require an animal partner.
He could...try to use a shadow clone to replicate a lot of Inuzuka clan abilities, but I'm not even sure how that would...work...lore-wise. The power system in Naruto turns into a bit of a mess when we get later into the series though

There is a misunderstanding that I would like to point out.
The sharingan only allows you to copy hand signs, but for example if you do not master the fire style you will not be able to copy a fire style jutsu. The same goes for jutsu that require fairly good chakra control abilities like the rasengan and the chidori.
So his ability to use the five natures has nothing to do with the sharingan, it is just pure talent.

Also he failed to see Rock Lee's taijutsu or copy it due to it being only physical.
did you even watch the show, when they first introduced it they were very clear about 2 things :-
1) it uses a lot of chakra
2) it CANNOT copy kekei genkai like ice style

And if you use HASHIRAMA CELLS you get a Rinnegan with 6+ extra abilities like RIPPING SOULS OUT OF PEOPLE and SUMMON THE EMPEROR OF HELL.
It's not that simple to get a Rinnegan but you're close. You just have to wait literal DECADES for it to finally show up.

@Jigolopuff The Rinnegan requires Indra's and Asura's Chakra to mix and become Hagoromo's in order for the Sharingan to evolve into a Rinnegan. While it could be possible for someone to get both of the reincarnated cells, it'll be difficult seeing as how both of them end up being Power Houses at some point and it also requires the knowledge of the Rinnegan that Madara possessed.
We LITERALLY learn the sharigan can cast genjutsu seeing chakra as a colour in Shippuden. you must not have watched the show.
If your Kakashi:
- has like 4 moves
- is known for copying moves
- is basically never seen copying a move during a serious fight

I theorize that you just can’t copy a jutsu that you don’t have an affinity for. If you can’t use earth style, you can’t copy earth style, even if you know the hand signs. Much like how Naruto knows the hand signs for a clone jutsu, but he can’t do one in part one. And we’ve seen shinobi who have multiple affinities. Hiruzen can use all 5 chakra natures. Kakashi, being a generational genius, I believe he also has the ability to use all 5 chakra natures, which is why he’s able to copy jutsu with his sharingan.

Nah, Uchiha aren't dumb enough to use the enemy Jutsu that they know how to counter.
Kakashi is known as Copy Ninja, because that's one of his famous tricks. Zabuza was tricked by him and copy skill is actually not that useful, he just made it seem useful.

I took it as Kakashi was fairly unique in how he thought to use the Sharingan. He was a genius with a great memory and a complete understanding of chakra release principles. The Sharingan gave him the visual acuity to read hand seals being performed at fast speeds from a good distance away and at odd angles, etc. etc. Then Kakashi got the bright idea to use that on the battlefield, etc. etc. and learned other people's techniques on the fly.
That's why Kakashi stuck out as The COPY NINJA but the Uchiha are not the COPY CLAN.
Yeah, the Uchihas are arrogant little pricks.
That works, especially as it implies that regardless of being known for it Kakashi was wise enough to realize that an awful lot of the time it's plain stupid to copy an opponent's technique: regardless of whether you can do it they're the ones who have actually already used it before in combat and brought whatever support they feel it requires. Many of the times you see Kakashi do this he's trying to leverage the psychological effect more than the actual technique he's copying, which works best against opponents without the experience to either be entirely confident in their loadout or the experience to stop caring whether they can win because if you can't outright beat an enemy ninja you can't run or hide from them either. Do this enough times against opponents you can afford to leave alive to talk about it and your legend is made.

Kind of like how Naruto's entire mission statement in his match against Neji is undone because by the end, Naruto was BORN and DESTINED to be the chosen one as he was the latest in a series of magical reincarnations as well as benefitting from a shit load of nepotism due to his father's legacy.

It's only in the anime and video games that it's treated as a generic Fire Style jutsu that anyone can use. Even Kakashi never uses it in the manga.

That wasn't the Fireball Jutsu, it was Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning (Fire Style: Burning Ash in the dub).
I meant that the specific jutsu "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique" (Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu) is only used by Uchihas in the manga (Fugaku, Itachi, Madara, Obito, Sarada, and Sasuke).
Fire Release: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet, in the anime also Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet and/or Fire Dragon: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique.
Either way, still not _the_ Great Fireball Technique.
Hiruzen didn’t use fire ball against Orochimaru
He used Dragon Flame bombs
The copying ability is also what Orochimaru wanted it for; his goal was to learn every jutsu and the Sharingan would help with that. Of course, that goal of Orochimaru's was forgotten once the Mangekyo came into the story and Orochimaru himself as sidelined for the Akatsuki
I prefer how the Sharingan was portrayed in Part One over Shipudden and Boruto.
The manage sharingan exists in part oen when Itachi's was introduced there is a way to fix it but it need change like Itachi genjutus was the result of mix between different Clan like his friends is form another clan that can cast a genjutus and he give Itachi his eve before he dies and the dark flame and sosano should be the result of mastering a dark chakra that allows you access to those abilities and obito need to change as well he is half hyuga and half uchiha which explains why he has that ability

I thought the answer was pretty simple. You can’t copy Kekkei Genkai and everyone in Shippuden is using those against Sharingan users.

@AE1Bat you don't need hand signs to copy. Hand signs just help control Chakra better. The sharingan copies the jutsu because it sees it. Sauske copied Lee's kick, because it was a jutsu, not some regular kick.

I remember when that was a game changer being able to predict the opponents' movements, but then literally any character could keep up with each other in every fight no matter if they had a sharingan or not lol

Sasuke vs Naruto showed that as Sasuke was evolving his sharingan, he couldnt keep up with Naruto until he got the full sharingan, and then even if he could see Naruto he couldn't keep up with the Nine Tails' attacks...
Now it doesn't matter if you have a sharingan or not, every heavy hitter in the Naruto universe can keep up with each other's movement without special eyes (Naruto, Gai, the 5 Kage, the Hokage, etc).
I love playing Ultimate Ninja 3 where the sharingan was about copying justus.

Fun times! For a duration, you play as your opponent’s character. I remember using Sasuke copying Temari after an ultimate attack and gained her giant folding fan. Me and my buddy spammed wind projectiles too see who’s better.

My initial thoughts pretty much lined up with what you said in the video. It would've been cool to see him copy more justu in his fights but by the time Shippuden comes along, the opponents are all pretty much specialists
I think all Kishimoto had to do was let Kakashi copy Kakuzu's Diamond Morph like @DygoKnight said in the video, and let him use it in the Pain fight, as well as add some dialogue about how Kakashi can't copy anything against the specialists, and it would have been a good enough nod to his copy ninja roots.

It's crazy how many cool things and plot points the series introduced only to leave them completely forgotten. Basically your "set ups that were never paid off" videos but just going into more detail of some of them. Great video
its because when they started writing Naruto they didn't yet know how far will it go, and didn't have whole world already made up, they were developing world while writing next arc, this is why things changed and never were the same. in 1st arc using shuriken and kunai very well was making you dangerous enemy, in last arc of shippuden you had jutsu to destroy whole country
I really liked the concept of copying jutsus.
Unfortunately, this was lost throughout story. Besides that, with the introduction of the Mangekyou Sharingan, the Sharingan lost its usefulness.
I still don't think there should be an Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. I find the concept of losing sight much more interesting and poetic.

Kakashi is probably the only shinobi that have a sharingan and can use the five natures. He’s not better at copying, but at ninjutsu compared to other sharingan users.
So only Kakashi could use this techhique of copying against most lower level ninjas, but only for ninjutsus he saw before

In the manga, Kakashi never uses any Wind or Fire jutsu.
I'm pretty sure he only has earth, water, and lighting, he never used wind or fire. And according to kakashi and yamato jonin naturally have multiple elemental nature's

I feel like it *kinda* makes sense that other users dont use it to copy.
So like, the sharingan doesnt just GIVE you the magical ability to copy jutsu, it lets you analyze an opponent's movements and chakra flow, which CAN be used to copy jutsu, if youre focused on it enough AND skilled enough and able to use the justu yourself. Its at least a little more effort than just "boom, your jutsu is mine now"
Plus most of the other sharingan users are pretty damn prideful, not generally the sort who would go "I'm gonna copy your techniques instead of just using my own to beat you." I mean... Madara might just to add insult to injury, but...
As for Kakashi not really using it.... aside from the kekkei genkai and Pain, yeah, there is just no good excuse

I am pretty sure it was said out right you could copy, not just that with skill you can because you know saw it, you just have to be able to cast it (hence no kekkegenkai or releases you don’t have affinity for). Even then the level of skill certainly doesn’t seem to be very high considering how early one sasuke is able to copy (particularly in the chunin exams when he copies someone’s answer with just the pencil head movements). Even if it was, most of the shown sharingan users would be apt enough at it to do so. For non uchiha I believe all the abilities are the same just higher chakra draw.

Kakashi had Rasengan before Chidori as he said he made Chidori because he couldn't add lightning to Rasengan. Kakashi had Chidori before he got Sharingan. He did NOT copy Rasengan.
He didn't develop the Chidori from the Rasengan, the jutsu has a completely different activation principle.

Also the sharingan copies hand signs, and the rasengan doesn't use signs
This, plus the way that the Rasengann works is that it's all about using chakra shaping, not hand signs, which is what the Sharingan copies/reads to copy/predict jutsu.
I feel like the copy jutsu just becomes extremely ineffective once the Mangekyo Sharingan starts to diminish the users eye sight and thats why we dont see Kakashi use it in Shippuden, as for Sasuke I don't feel like he ever truly mastered the copy jutsu, he left the village before he could.

People stopped being ninjas using ninjutsu and started being space wizards with tons of innate abilities that literally cant be copied
Kakashi had an extremely great potential. He is established as a extremely intelligent ninja, knowing over 1000 jutsus, with an ability to copy just seen jutsus (if he sees them with the sharingan), a bunch of summons with different abbilities (the major one being their sense of smell) and to finish it off, with rather "low" chakra level (in comparison to other high end shinobis). His way of fighting should be very tactical. He should try to spare chakra, so he should not base his tactics on raw destructivce power techniques. He should mostly try to combine many different "weak" jutsus in a synergestic way to manage the situation. The only flaw of that kind of character design is that you have to be able to... come up with all the ideas and keep them interesting.

Was looking for this. Yes, he was shown using a few copied jutsus but they were practical only a few times in fights. While training he figured out which ones would be best and generally stuck to those since he had practiced so much with them. One kick practice a thousand times versus 1,000 kicks practiced one time.

Every use of kamui drained his eyesight. In the final arc he himself says he can barely see. So you could argue his constant use of kamui is why he stopped copying jutsu in later arcs

I think it's also worth noting that Kakashi is one of a very few ninja specifically noted as having mastered all five chakra natures, like, that's a very rare and noteworthy thing. Kakashi, Kakuzu, and the third Hokage are the only ones that immediately spring to mind, and every time it was mentioned it was remarked upon like it was a significant achievement. Kakashi might have had an easier time of it due to the Sharingan enabling him to copy other people's jutsus, but he is also specifically noted as a once in a generation genius even before he got the Sharingan, becoming a jounin by 15 and entering Anbu really early too. I think it's a safe bet that Kakashi is noted as "The Copy Ninja" because most Uchiha *couldn't* replicate his range, because copying a technique doesn't really matter much if you lack the ability to use it very well, so they might use the copying to build a solid repertoire of their respective elemental affinities, but they likely don't lean as heavily on it in combat as Kakashi did.

I think i remember that it was explained at some point in naruto classic, that the user of the fully developed sharingan could anticipate the movements of his opponent a few seconds before they happen. I think it would make sense that users of the base sharingan use this to their advantage at different levels and even combat styles. A young Uchia with one or to tomoe might use it for an advantage with his taj-jutsu for example, anticipating hits and deflecting them with ease because he can literally see it coming. I imagine a more advanced and experienced user of the Sharingan, that has mastered his 3 tomoe sharingan, would then use it to anticipate finger-signs and use it to copy Jutsu. And someone with an even further developed Sharingan would obviously not have to rely on something like this. I agree with you, great video!

Also, on a totally different note that you made towards the end of the video: I think it could've been an interesting plot if the Uchia despised Kakashi because of that very reason, that he used the sharingan to copy Jutsu. Someone else wrote that the Uchia just didn't like to copy Jutsu. What if the Uchia not just didn't like that, but actually really despised it as weak and dishonorable. And Kakashi is running around and literally getting known as The Copy Ninja with his stolen Sharingan and shining a bad light on the powers of the Sharingan. I imagine that could've made the Uchia very angry so they started plotting to try to kill Kakashi or something.

My understanding of it -- and I'm obviously being generous here and presuming it's not just a blatant retcon because Kishimoto quickly understood how broken that ability would be -- is that the Sharingan doesn't actually copy abilities at all. People calling Kakashi the "copy ninja" is just an unreliable narration -- in other words, it's just characters saying something that they believe is true but that isn't necessarily accurate even in-universe. Kinda like how Rock Lee was described as not being able to use chakra at all which we then discovered was just characters being misinformed or misunderstanding the mechanics of how chakra works altogether. It's no different to people in real life interacting with physics everyday but not really understanding the mechanics of it in depth.
It just allows the user to register and remember handsigns at near instant rate. Which is something we see Kakashi do. And it just so happens that performing those seals perfectly along with an infusion of chakra will spawn the ability as it ought to. But as the series went on and fights became more centered around kekkai genkai rather than hand-seal style jutsu, that part of the Sharingan became obsolete because there were no seals to copy any longer. The other combatant has mastered the ability to make that jutsu happen by just manipulating their internal chakra, which isn't something that the Sharingan can pick up on, and thus it's not something a Sharingan user can copy at all. In addition to that, it could just be that Naruto's setting takes place as hand-seal jutsu are falling out of favour; new generations are faster, smarter, and relying on jutsu that a) can potentially signal what you're about to do, and b) take time to prepare, is progressively seen as subpar compared to inate abilities that shinobi can use at a moment's notice.
We even see as much in Boruto where the education system's fully embraced the idea that organising teams by their kekkai genkai makes more sense than personality-type attribution.
The mangenkyo gives you two abilities. Obito kept one and gave Kakashi the other. They are two different Kamui 8:00

Not to mention, we can infer that the Rasengan cannot be copied. It’s based purely on a change in the form of chakra, without any hand seals or a specific elemental chakra nature. It’s purely a matter of skill in shaping solidified chakra.

My take is every uchiha can do what kakashi did they choose not to and it’s not really a copy they actually go over it in the zabuza fight he’s just reading the hand movements and matching his speed waiting to psych out his opponent to get the upper hand madrara did display this eye ability in the war when he was first reanimated he looked all around while fighting reading everyone’s movement tracking everything he just didn’t choose to copy bc it’s more of a trick than an eye ability
Also kakuzu didn’t use a lot of hand signs only giving kakashi limited moments to predict everything we could also make the argument shippuden enemies could slap up any part 1 enemy with ease so kakuzu would be faster and smarter than what kakashi normally would fight

In Naruto Ultimate Ninja 1, 2 & 3 (ps2), Kakashi and Sasuke can copy a lot of jutsus and even entire movesets, except for the kekkei genkai (haku, hashirama, sakon, kimimaro), hidden techniques (shino, shikamaru, ino, choji) and konohamaru, gaara and kankuro jutsus. He can even copy weapons, like Kisame's samehada, Zabuza's kubikiribocho and Temari's fan (???).
It was really fun to play as them! It is a shame that Storm games didn't include this mechanic.

Yes, he did not copy the Chidoiri, he developed it. But he didn't develop it using the Rasengan as a basis.

Meaning he failed to apply lightning nature to the rasengan and therefore created the chidori which he used before getting his sharingan, which means he couldnt've copied the rasengan with the sharingan.

When Jiraiya is teaching the Rasengan to Naruto he states that only himself and Minato ever mastered that before.

If you think about it, having that many techniques can possibly be confusing to the user. Especially if the bulk of them are not something you're used to using. Even if you've mastered a technique you copied, you don't necessarily have the experience how it can be used, especially in conjunction with other copied powers.
My headcanon is that the copy ninja thing being unique to Kakashi. The Sharingan let you analyze a technique but only a genius like Kakashi can actually copy it
Sasuke could copy Lee’s taijitsu but that can be retconned as him having affinity for taijutsu which is canon compliant and practicing that move beforehand.

Kakashi didn't copy kamui it was his MS ability. Each MS has one ability for each eye his was kamui, and the other is Obitos' ability, one for each eye. That is why kamui sent stuff to obitos made dimension.

The copying part is kakashi's own skillset. Only his body can let him use all the elements (that he used) because of his natural affinity. He only used the sharingan to basically view things in slow motion. Useful for reading enemies' hand seals and during his own chidori.
In shipuuden, it just makes sense because if you can just spam kamui, why would you bother with smaller jutsu

It also comes down to the fact that multiple hand signs stopped being a thing. At the beginning it took like 30 signs to make a water dragon. You copy that and you copy the water dragon jutsu. Over time, the characters grew stronger and shifted to using jutsus as their main weapons instead of as a special skill. That doesn’t work well with a mechanic that requires a pause in the fight whenever they try to use one. So later, the only times a string of hand signs were used for a jutsu was for dramatic effect. That mostly renders the infamous copy eye irrelevant so Kishimoto came up with new uses for it.
It is very lame seeing the Sharingan go from a cool character trait to the most OP thing in the entire verse. From good vision and copying jutsus to summoning giant chakra mechs, and THEN they ALSO make it so the fkn Rinnegan is just a sharingan in the end? FFS
And Byakugan was introduced as a counter or rival to Sharingan only to become irrelevant later

I think that one thing most people could be content with is if the Canon manga had a scene where kakashi explains to naruto and Sakura during the kazekage mission that when a sharingan unlocks mongekyo, it trades these abilities for the copying Ability because the mangekyo puts so much strain on your eyes. It makes sense that getting blinded over time would make it hard to spot the exact details required to copy shit

Never was that into Naruto as a kid, but I did watch it a few times. Back before I knew about anime and called it an “adult cartoon”, I was so curious about Kakashi’s eye. Then I remember there was a movie that played on Toonami, which was hyped as Kakashi finally showing off what was under the eye patch (or at least lil kid me assumed so). In fact the reveal was a big plot point. I seen this movie when I was like 6 or 7 so anywhere between February of 2006 and the year or 2007. However this was still when the ninja aspects of Naruto were still apparent too before going into what it would turn into later on
I remember in the first clash of ninja game on ps2, Sasuke had his own version of every other characters ultimate move. The way the sharingan worked in part 1 was awesome.

During the events of Naruto, there is a steady escalation of conflicts and both allies snd enemies keep getting stronger. Hence,
1. No need to copy / counter with same jutsu if you already know better / stronger jutsus.
2. Can't copy bloodline jutsus.
3. Can copy but can't use jutsus of later opponents because the jutsus use too much chakra.
4. Opponents are wary of his ability and prevent making opportunities for him to copy jutsus.

As far as in-universe rationalizations go at least, the way that I've interpreted it is that 1000 jutsu doesn't mean "1000 ninjutsu" even if we associate the words, 1000 jutsu is just 1000 varied techniques, like Lee's speed, that's a shinobi technique.
And that the eye doesn't really copy stuff by itself even if it looks like it, it gives the user the necessary insight into a technique so the user can reproduce it if they're capable of processing the information and doing it, and if they have the necessary requirements for it. So it just allows you to bypass the steps of understanding how a technique works.
Kakashi is just a biased sample for the sharingan copy ability. It's like how we get the impression that all jonin are around Kakashi's level of skill when that's actually very rare.
Kakashi is just specially good at copying stuff despite all the shortcomings he got with the eye because he's just more generally skilled at shinobi stuff and is able to do more nature transformations so he can copy more ninjutsu than most uchiha that only had fire release.

It's been quite a while since I finished Shippuuden. I haven't seen anything Naruto related for some time, so this video caught my interest.
I think there is generally a lot of missed potential with a lot of characters in Shippuuden.
When I just think about Lee and Neji for example, they have shown some amazing abilities in Naruto yet they were never shown having as much growth as the "main characters" in Shippuuden, which is a shame.

I'd say it's a combination of how in a narrative like this copying abilities may be cool but ultimately a character will always need to return to their own stuff, and that with the power escalation you could say that using his own personal techniques was required for the potency than techniques he has only copied and not practiced

Magma ranges between temperature greater than 1,200 but slightly cooler than 2,500 F. Which is ironically around the same temperature Diamonds are formed in. So Magma is required to make diamonds and we know Magma style is a Kekkei Genkei so Diamond ninjutsu is as well and why Kakashi can’t copy it

Another useful jutsu to copy would have been the Raikage lightning armor, though it might require too much chakra for extended use.
2:49 I was most impressed with and realized what a genius Kakashi was when he teamed up with Asuma's team against Hidan and Kakuzu. His anbu training and genius level skills were super apparent at that point and it made me think of him in a completely new light. Team 7's leader wasn't just some highly gifted nerdy pervert, he was a PTSD ridden war veteran who really was pushed to his absolute limits as a man and a total tactical genius and brilliant fighter.
It's a bit like in an RPG where they don't restrict how many different spells/ abilities you can learn on a single character, excluding character specific skills, so you end up with a character who has every learnable spell in the game, but they tend to only use a small handful of them anyway because they cover most situations well enough, personal prefence, some spells are simply better leading to redundancy in the kit, and depending on things like stats/ equipment they might have certain spells that are more/ less effective than usual etc.
The sharingan can in theory allow the user to learn every non-unique jutsu on sight, but that doesn't mean they'll have an understanding of the best ways to use it and on account of how many they can end up learning they might just not be necessary due to having better options. And then the eyes also give a handful of unique jutsu themselves, most of which are arguably amongst the strongest in the verse, which drives in the whole issue of redundancy even more. Nagato/ Pain had proficiency with all 5 basic nature transformations and presumably had at least a couple jutsu for each, but we almost never see him using them because the Rinnegan abilities are just that much more effective and aren't nearly as well known.

Man i miss the simplicity in Naruto, like sharingan mainly copying jujutsus, enchancing user's sight and senses (if im not wrong), shit was cool when was simple. Even unpopular clan abilities or skills were kinda cool. I used to play shinobi life on roblox when I was younger and it was fire to walk around with a normal sharingan and copy everything or the thrill of unlocking chidori. Maybe it's purely nostalgia but I think it was better back then.
Basically in the beginning of the anime kakashi and zabuza was weaving jutsu signs for 5 minutes straight, only to throw 1 jutsu.
And Kakashi was copying the signs.
Afterwards when kishimoto decided to get rid of the sign weaving, there was no longer room for Kakashi copying Jutsu.
Instead kishimoto wanted to give kakashi 1 cool ability, that was easy and time efficient to draw.
My impression is that the copy ninja was something that felt really good as a local story, but it's not a great concept if the author is looking to do worldbuilding.
It is quite an overpowered ability, in the sense that knowing hundreds/thousands of jutsus, he should have a "counter" to just about any jutsu thrown at him.
And the concept of jutsus "countering" each other is quite useful when making stories. That is what allows weak characters to beat stronger ones, making the outcome of any battle unpredictable. Not only that, but adding depth to the strategy of each battle, making them more interesting.
I agree the author could have found ways to "nerf" the copying ability, however, personally, I think it was a good choice to sunset the idea of "copy ninja Kakashi".
Nah! It could be easily explained away that since he's the last Hakate, the Sharigan works differently for Kakkashi. Him being a Hakate could also be used to explain why the Sharigan could be transferred to him with little side effects.

to be fair in order for him to copy anything he has to naturally be able to preform the justu himself the sharingan doesn't copy the justu per say it copy's the opponents movement and the user then preforms said moments in order to copy the justu if kakashi doesn't have the ability to use the move himself he can't copy it
I remember when the manga was still coming out, when he didn't have the sharingan anymore... I thought he was going to make a plan with jutsus he had copied before or something. Since he is one of the few ninjas in that fight, and it was the only thing I could thing I could see that made sense at the time.
Copying jutsu was kind of Kakashi's thing. The rest of the uchiha just used it to gain an advantage by seeing the opponent's moves before hand. Kakashi used it to see the opponent's chakra flow and signs etc before they did them and he would do the same thing as them in order to produce their jutsu. He mostly did this to gain a psychological edge over the opponent, not to "learn" an enemy's jutsu.
He's not really copying their jutsu in the sense that he's gaining the ability to always use their jutsu. It's sort of like reading sheet music while playing the piano--just because you're following what the paper says doesn't mean you could replicate that song perfectly every time without it. He would still have to commit it to memory. So he CAN learn jutsu by using the sharingan but it would still take work and likely practice if he can't keep seeing that jutsu being used over and over. That is why he doesn't just break out a ton of jutsu he stole from others because he isn't normally learning the moves, he's just following the opponent's movements on the fly when they do a jutsu and it produces whatever they were doing.
Number of jutsus (and by extension the copy ability) is the hallmark of the teacher. Hiruzen and Ebisu, both are impressive teachers and can do many jutsus. As long as Kakashi is in the role of the teacher, the copy ability is on-theme. We see him use it in shippuden when he is teaching Naruto, but not later. When Naruto bodies Kakuzu, Kakashi admits he’s been surpassed and we don’t see any more copy abilities. Narratively, it fits.
Short answer. Copying a jutsu becomes harder later on in the series. There were abilities that are unique and impossible for a sharigan user to copy. So it becomes obsolete to keep copying especially when they awoken a new form of their eyes.
They brought it back in Boruto Naruto Next Generations where Sarada used her Sharingan to copy ninjutsu quite a few times....
