I´m also a happy owner of the super everything bundle and I have to say it was one of the best choices I could´ve made (Especially after I noticed that you update it with the new projects wich is SUPER nice of you ^^) To be honest you sparked my interest in steampunk a while back with your googles and tophat video and I also found out that I´m apperantly quite good at building these... so yeah thank you for everything. Your style of videos are great! They not only teach you how to make awesome costumes with a low budget.. they also entertain! It´s great to have you around on youtube, your videos are really inspiring. By the way is there a possibility to maybe send you pictures of the projects that I´ve done with your patterns?
Awww, that's so good. You totally made my day:) Yes, I would love to see your pics!! You can tag them #lostwaxoz on Instagram, or email me at the email address, that should be at the end of each pattern you have. I think you can also post them on my FB page somehow...... which is here: facebook.com/LostWaxOz/
Lost Wax I'm happy to make you happy Since your work and Projects made me also very happy with my new discovered Hobby and interest for steampunk.... jeez thats alot happyness. Well I'll send you the pics through Mail... you can add them to your site if you want :) Have a great day and keep up your awesome and inspiring work... but most important keep up that creative and Funny attitude of yours!
If you are having issues with seams (where the two foam pieces come together and are way too obvious for your perfectionist personality) then you can rub the tip of your glue gun (the metal part) along the seam to make it appear well...seamless. He doesn't mention that in this video but he has in past videos. It's a great little trick to make your props look more professional.
I just got through repairing my arm after its first mostly successful outing. Couple of tips. If your foam isn't terribly dense, it may be worth using some copper washers on the hinges to prevent them pulling through. Copper washers seem to be the easiest to get in the right size. Also the elbow piston isn't necessarily perpendicular to the shaft, so consider whether you'd be better gluing at an off-90 degrees angle. (As mine broke off, perhaps for this reason, and gluing the pistons strongly is difficult, I ended up 3D-printing a coupler just to be sure.)
I think you're TOO understated with how F'n awesome this looks. Absolutely incredible job, reminds me of the Steampunk design work done in Hellboy II - The Golden Army. Kudos dude!
Dude, this is phenomenal. I am absolutely going to get the pattern. Your tutorial style is so friendly and encouraging, your art is stunning, and the filming is excellent. I feel so inspired, thank you so much!
Hi Chris, bought your bundle a few weeks ago and I'm very, very pleased with it. I finished the steampunk shouder armour and the steampunk arm. Painting is for me the most tricky part as I'm colourblind. A big shout out for your instruction video's, very helpfull together with the patterns. For the newcomers on this channel, it pays to watch the video(s) a couple a times before you start cutting and glueing. Greetings from the Netherlands
I Absolutely love how this came out. I'm impressed by the amount of effort, creativity, editing, and time you put into this project. nice job! Also, instead of a deodorant ball, I think you could use a ping pong ball, it would be lighter on the project.
I find it so fascinating that you don't use contact glue but hot glue. And everything looks so awesome. When I used hot glue, my pieces didn't want to stay in their place and I often burned myself...so HOOOOW
I used to use Contact Cement- if you have a look at my early videos, that's what I was using, however, then I moved back to Canada from Australia. The glue that was so easy to find and cheap in Australia, wasn't to be found in Canada, and other contact cements I tried that were available locally did not work well at all. The other thing is that when I lived in Oz, I could work outside, whereas in Canada, I had to be inside most of the year, which meant exposing myself to concentrated fumes. The other thing that happened at that time is that my 6 year old son was diagnosed with cancer, which made the warnings on the back of those contact cement tubes that much more meaningful to me. So, yeah, I figured I would see if I could get hot glue to work, and to my complete surprise, it actually did a really good job once I learned to tame it:) I'd say the biggest key is to have an adjustable temp glue gun. It does three things. 1- you can adjust the temp low enough so that you don't have to hold the pieces together for very long before the glue cools, 2- you get way less burnt fingers, 3- less fumes from the glue sticks, 4- it doesn't melt the foam. The glue gun I have is just a cheap one from Amazon, I think I paid about $20 and it has served me very well. Hope that helps!
Aww but what if I wanted to watch arms spin aroun in space forever? 😂💚holy cow my head just exploded from all those directions 😂👍 Well done sir well done. You are officially the king foam! 🤘
Witte Artistry hey Kim, it's so funny to see you on this channel. Great minds think a like. He makes amazing creations and I could watch the videos over and over...he's brilliant. 😉
I bought your ultimate pattern bundle a while back. One of the best decisions I've made when it comes to managing my costuming budget. Your work is amazing as always.
I LOVE your patterns... so glad I got all of them! Really makes a professional looking costume economical. You are a genius! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us!
That's so good to hear! That is one of my goals- to try keep the materials accessible with a low budget- and to encourage people to use what they might already have around the house:)
Working my way through this project right now, your patterns, written instructions, and video instructions are great. I bought the everything bundle and am super happy with it. I like the practicality of your videos and how well they instruct. Great work.
Thank you for another incredible creation! I have been using old speaker wire I have been holding onto from an old home theater unit that blew up on me years ago. I put them all over the cat masks and some hats. They look sweet on steampunk goodies. I love them!
I have loved this Style ever since I first saw it, and I Love the information about making costume pieces. And since I did special effects for a living.
Hey Chris, I literally saw someone wearing this arm today at a steampunk fest! It looked good, my man! Having seen it in the flesh, I'm seriously considering giving it a go!
Thank you for this tutorial. I purchased your pattern and have the materials all ready to go. You've done an amazing job on this arm, your talent really shows; impressive work. If mine comes out looking even half as good as yours, I'll consider myself fortunate. Thanks again, I can't wait to get at it.
You work gets more and more advanced. I built a top hat similar to the design suggestions you made back in the day. I used yoga mat, crafting foam for patches and googley eyes (bought a pack at art store) for rivets. But it was kinda easy. Most challenging part was a fit and curves of the hat. Then I sanded 2 nerf guns - rifle and pistol and made them similar looking - rivets, copper, silver, weathered look. But this arm's complexity skyrocketed. I don't know what kind of diet you follow now since you moved to few years ago but it clearly works and make your stuff extraordinary :D
Thanks for the kind words! When I made that first top hat pattern, I would never have believed how versatile EVA foam really is. I also told people hot glue wouldn't work....Guess I have learned a little bit since then. Of course there is always more to learn....
In all my life I did only once tutorial (Assassin's hidden blade) and I was so proud of myself. But this. This is amazing. This is hilarious. This is irresistible. Now my blade seems like it's a kid's toy and this arm is masterpiece.
I have watched a few of your videos and think your techniques are easy to follow. I hope to follow your techniques from a few of your projects to construct a Mr Freeze costume. Any suggestions on which ones you would use.
Glad you stopped by! If this kind of project is a bit too much, you could try a simpler project to get the hang of it all first. I have a free pattern for a battle axe on my website that's pretty easy and looks great.
I cant believe i made this man! It didnt look so good, duh, but it still looked awesome! I am now working on a new and improved one, that i cant wait for
I don't know where you get all this foam, I don't have any store in France to get that big pieces of Foam, but I think I have enough with the children store to make an arm for one of my BJD. That's a really really great tutorial, may be your masterpiece right now !
This is great! Thanks for developing the pattern and making this instructional video. Just a quick question: Is contact cement better for gluing the black foam together, or does it not really matter?
Contact cement can be stronger if you get the right brand, where I live, there is no decent contact cement available locally, so I use hot glue, and it works great for me. It's also way less toxic than contact cement. But, yes you can definitely use contact cement.
I am also the Happy owner of super everything bundle and love it and your videos. I and my adult kids are preparing steampunk costumes for GenCon and this is helping alot. A couple of things I found in this build so far that I did a little differently is I used the top to one of those toy capsules the kids get a ring or whatever out of instead of a roll on ball. I placed a neopixel under it and added a gauge with a neopixel and hid a microcontroller in the acid core thingy. I will post a vid or pic a soon as I get it completed. :)
Hi Chris, thanks for the new video.... I bought the Ultimate Pattern Pack a few weeks ago, it's fantastic and the other day I got the update with this new pattern in it.... Over the moon... Thanks and best wishes Gaz
You have great patterns here, I'm considering purchasing them, but I would like some steampunk shin guards that are like your arm, with bells and whistles, do you make those?
Hi there, I currently do not have any steampunk shin guard patterns. Were you thinking of something that would go all the way around the leg or just strap to the front?
@@LostWax I am making this killer Halloween costume, I was thinking sort of like boot tops up and over the knee, with tubes, wires and pressure gauges. Not just in front but around the leg, but like velcro in the back so I could get my big feet into them, any way I can show you a picture?
I'm using an adjustable temp gun. I buy multitemp glue sticks and then turn my gun as low as I can go and still have the glue flow. This keeps me from getting burnt fingers and lets me work faster because I don't have to hold things as long waiting for the glue to cool.
It is really quite durable, as long as you make it from reasonably dense foam- the foam I used worked fine, but one of those camping mats would probably not be dense enough. The main issue that I came across was if I didn't flare the tubing that I used for the pivoting rivet on the elbow joint enough, then it popped out. Once I flared it a bit more, it was fine.
There should be a picture of the foam mat I use. It's made as an anti-fatigue mat, and I get it in a big 4x8 foot roll. This link should get you there (affiliate link) www.amazon.com/dp/B00BCSAANQ/?tag=lowa09-20 At least I think it should...I just signed up for a few different Amazon Affiliates, so if you are not from Canada or the U.S. it might try take you somewhere else :0
Hi! Loved this project and would dearly love to incorporate it into my current steampunk repertoire, however I am a plus size and I have large arms. Is the pattern for this able to be easily sized up?
I do have 3 different sizes included in the pattern, the largest being for a 41cm bicep. As far as resizing goes, it is possible, not as easy as some of my patterns due to the fact that arms tend to not scale equally length to width. The best way to resize for extra width is to make a vertical cut down the centre back of the arm pieces and add in a n extra strip of foam. It's probably easiest to do this once you have built the main arm structure from foam. It adds two extra seams down the back, but since the arm is made to look like it is pieced together, it still looks right. If you want to avoid the extra seams, you can try to add the extra to the paper pattern. Hope that helps, if you want to give it a try, and run into problems, you can always email me and I'll do my best to help you out.-Cheers, Chris
I'm enjoying making my steampunk hydraulic arm for the most part, but I'm finding parts of it VERY difficult as I'm petite. That means that my bicep is medium, my forearm is small, and everything is MUCH shorter. I've had to cut out a lot of the design out to be able to fit the more important stuff. Had a few moments of complete and utter frustration while redesigning some things and making a lot of mistakes while I figure out what works and what doesn't. It'll come together...I hope...
Hmmm, yeah, that is the tricky thing about arms, they can have such a broad combination of length/ width. Maybe I should revisit that design and add another size. I hope you are able to get something to work for you!! If you do have any questions, feel free to contact me!
It's actually quite durable. You can get different densities, the denser it is the stronger it is. This arm is really amazingly durable, the only small problem I had was, if I was being really active (pretending to be a ninja, for example) sometimes the elbow rivet came out. Which was just because I didn't flare the end of the rivet quite enough.
Awesome, I saw your comment, and was, like, I'm so close, I'll just wait to answer when I can say "It's done" Ya beat me to it. Thanks for your patience. Hope it works well for you!
B4c0nL0v3R what you can do is when you get the pattern isolate the prices that wrap around your arm and adjust the height and width according to the measurements of your own arm. However I would keep it at least and inch and a half of extra room so that when you bend your arm and your muscles flex your arm will still have room. If you adjust to your size you will have to make small adjustments here and there for the rest of the main build but it should just be trimming for the most part and not a big deal. I hope it goes well for you man on whatever you decide to do 😊
Hi There, Right now I only have the one size but more will be coming as I figure them out- probably still a couple weeks away. I would guess the size in the pattern could still fit you O.K., I made it to fit me and my arms are not that big either. I would suggest you only cut out the pattern pieces for the main arm part, then make that to be sure it fits you before cutting them all out. If you do need to make it skinnier, I would suggest removing material from the centre front and back on both pieces. That will keep the elbow pivot point centered. I'd love to hear how it goes for you!
I get big rolls at my local big box hardware store, It's pretty cheap, like around $30. I am not sure where to get it in Italy, I wonder if anyone wants to chime in and help out?
I've bought quite a few of your patterns now and I LOOOOVE them....I was wondering if you had any plans to make something a little more "Lady" Steampunk oriented? I have plans for a steampunk themed birthday (and my husband costume is going to be awesome thanks to your patterns) but I'm struggling to find female oriented patterns....would love to have something from you that would go with my steampunk tapered top hat.
Hey, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't really though too much about the fact that I don't really have much specifically themed for a female. Most stuff I have made for my wife is pretty much all sewing, and drafted specifically for her, making it harder to make some sort of generic how to or pattern. I did make a pretty nice skirt out of curtains and a bridesmaids dress... Do you have any ideas you are thinking of, or a specific style?
Lost Wax.....I'm so excited that you responded to my question!!! Thank you so much.....I would really love to be able to make matching vambraces and maybe some shoulder armor! You're patterns are amazing, I've made 3 types of top hats and the Plague Dr's mask, next is the Airship, then the divers helmet, then gas mask :)...my husband will be getting this mechanical arm, so having something made from one of your patterns that I can wear to match up with the hubby would be awesome.....thanks again for responding....you made my day :)
Mmmm, yes, Vambrace, and shoulder armour would be great. I am not sure if those are any more feminine necessarily..... You know, if you want to make a vambrace, it should be pretty easy to figure out yourself, it is just basically a truncated cone. If you google truncated cone calculator, there is a website that will give you a printable file. Then all ya gotta do is add accoutrements:) I have a couple of projects in the queue before I do anything like that though, So, I am guessing you'll have had your party by then.....
Lost Wax yeah I guess they're not really that feminine unless the details on them make it look that way....my Party's not till 2018 :)....lots of making and planning to do....I will definitely have a look at the website you suggested....looking forward to seeing what your next projects are....

good call.
I just got through repairing my arm after its first mostly successful outing. Couple of tips.
If your foam isn't terribly dense, it may be worth using some copper washers on the hinges to prevent them pulling through. Copper washers seem to be the easiest to get in the right size.

It's just amazing to me that you can make foam projects look so realistic. What fun you are.

your stuff always looks so complicated yet doable when you actually get to it, I love it
Fascinating. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
You're welcome, thank you!
I Absolutely love how this came out. I'm impressed by the amount of effort, creativity, editing, and time you put into this project. nice job!
Also, instead of a deodorant ball, I think you could use a ping pong ball, it would be lighter on the project.
I thought the same, and you can put an LED in there also.
Love this. Hope to try it when husband receives the pattern.

Well done sir well done. You are officially the king foam! 🤘
Thanks Kim!
No problem! Keep it up Chris! :D
Witte Artistry hey Kim, it's so funny to see you on this channel. Great minds think a like. He makes amazing creations and I could watch the videos over and over...he's brilliant. 😉
Only in Ur Mind haha hey! 👋 I guess they do indeed 💚 me too. He's a foam beast!
I need to make a junkrat leg for comic con... This video is going to come in soooooo handy! It's given me so many ideas!!! Thank you ♥
Doomfist would be proud.
The props you make are totally awesome, mate!
Thanks!
I bought your ultimate pattern bundle a while back. One of the best decisions I've made when it comes to managing my costuming budget. Your work is amazing as always.

I would love to see a tutorial for a few good painting techniques. .

Awesome. Thanks for getting part 2 out so fast. Looking forward to your next project.
C'est magnifique ce que tu fais ! Tas beaucoup de patience, respect. Continue comme ça !
Awesome DIY
Truly epic work.
Thank you!
Recently got all of your patterns and gonna be making a lot of stuff for our steampunk group. Airship Aberrant! Keep being awesome!!!

*says where to place the wires*’
My slow brain: *what the heck dude*
I have new idea. What about steampunk metal jaw mask? I mean jaw mask thats open when you open your mount. Like bear trap or something.
ooh, thats a cool idea!
I'm glad to read that!
Hello, I was wondering if I can make this using just 2MM EVA foam? Because the 9MM foam looks a little to big on my arm.
i am ALMOST finished with this! but what would go well with the arm?
I’m loving this channel!! I am just curious where you got the light brown or tan foam from? I don’t think I’ve seen it like that before.
I love that your super hero name is MAM. lol beautiful. I freaking love your vids so much.
I have watched a few of your videos and think your techniques are easy to follow. I hope to follow your techniques from a few of your projects to construct a Mr Freeze costume. Any suggestions on which ones you would use.
Franchement, j'adore ce que tu fais, c'est juste.. magique
Wow this is amazing. Just got here randomly and couldn't stop watching. Wish to have the nerve to do something like this :0
Glad you stopped by! If this kind of project is a bit too much, you could try a simpler project to get the hang of it all first. I have a free pattern for a battle axe on my website that's pretty easy and looks great.
great job looks great
wow.. sin palabras . genial!!
thank you so much for this. I'm gonna try it out for my cosplay I think
Great arm!!!
I cant believe i made this man! It didnt look so good, duh, but it still looked awesome! I am now working on a new and improved one, that i cant wait for
So cool! I love your videos! My favorite thing to watch on youtube!
just fabulous!
Love it Chris, thanks alot
Using E.L.wire on this would take to another level, you could hide the battery in the bicep tank!
Christopher Crews that is what i am doing at the moment
Почему это так круто? Автор, вы супер!)))
Wow fantastic skill.🤗🤗
Thank you!
Nice work! Thank you for sharing!
What foam did you use?
Can i use leather or perugia to make the steampunk stuff?
I don't know where you get all this foam, I don't have any store in France to get that big pieces of Foam, but I think I have enough with the children store to make an arm for one of my BJD.
That's a really really great tutorial, may be your masterpiece right now !
Am I the only one who made this? My colors are gold, bronze and silver. It looks awsome.
I bet your kids Halloween costumes are freaking awesome
Hi! I love your videos and I love steampunk too!! What materials can I use instead of foam?
Woah! 0 dislikes! Nice one man!
That pun at the end LMAO
Really love your videos :D
This is turning out great. I really like that darker/black color but I can't figure out what you used. Is that Rub-n-Buff or something?
I used black acrylic paint as the base, then DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics over top.
Awesome. Thanks!
This is great! Thanks for developing the pattern and making this instructional video.

Hi Chris, thanks for the new video.... I bought the Ultimate Pattern Pack a few weeks ago, it's fantastic and the other day I got the update with this new pattern in it.... Over the moon... Thanks and best wishes Gaz
Thanks Gaz, glad you are happy with the Ultimate Bundle! It's the gift that just keeps on giving:)
This is awesome, reminds me of the tin man from Wizard of Oz. Do you have patterns and tutorial to build a full body suit like this.
how long did this project take you?

Thanks for answering so fast!
can i just buy this?
Super job as usual. Thanks for sharing ;)
Did you paint the vinyl tubing after attaching it. It doesn't look clear on the final model?
Yep, I painted the tubing.
Nice
DO U HAVE ANY STENCIL FOR A LEG?
I love it good job
This looks amazing!! Are all the materials (how much foam/thickness ecc) also listed on the instructions patterns?
Yep they are!
@@LostWax great! Thank you!
What type of foam did you use for this? I looked on your supplies link but can't figure out what you used. Thanks!
This video is.... riveting
I love ur videos
Lost Wax thank you so much for that info!
No worries!
You should make a lot of these steam punk robot arm on amazon
So how durable is Eva foam? Like is this gonna rip or break SUPER easily?
It's actually quite durable. You can get different densities, the denser it is the stronger it is. This arm is really amazingly durable, the only small problem I had was, if I was being really active (pretending to be a ninja, for example) sometimes the elbow rivet came out. Which was just because I didn't flare the end of the rivet quite enough.
awesome! Thanks for the reply. :)
Could you make a steampunk rifle?
Any word on when different sizes will be available?
It's gonna be a couple of weeks yet, I am away from work for a bit. That's the first thing on the list though.
You have sizes update yet homie?
Nevermind. I just got the email update. Ty. :D
Awesome, I saw your comment, and was, like, I'm so close, I'll just wait to answer when I can say "It's done" Ya beat me to it. Thanks for your patience. Hope it works well for you!
My arm is uhhhh quite skinny but long... what size do you suggest I do? Keep it normal?
B4c0nL0v3R what you can do is when you get the pattern isolate the prices that wrap around your arm and adjust the height and width according to the measurements of your own arm. However I would keep it at least and inch and a half of extra room so that when you bend your arm and your muscles flex your arm will still have room. If you adjust to your size you will have to make small adjustments here and there for the rest of the main build but it should just be trimming for the most part and not a big deal. I hope it goes well for you man on whatever you decide to do 😊
Mask Parades Wow thank you so much!!! This was very helpful :D I'll make sure to screenshot this so I can refer back...
B4c0nL0v3R no problem man. I have to do the same thing for myself on build like these. I hope your arm turns out great!
Mask Parades good luck with yours as well!!! c:
Hi There, Right now I only have the one size but more will be coming as I figure them out- probably still a couple weeks away. I would guess the size in the pattern could still fit you O.K., I made it to fit me and my arms are not that big either. I would suggest you only cut out the pattern pieces for the main arm part, then make that to be sure it fits you before cutting them all out. If you do need to make it skinnier, I would suggest removing material from the centre front and back on both pieces. That will keep the elbow pivot point centered. I'd love to hear how it goes for you!
2:40 Best. Plottwist. *EVER* . xD
can i ask where you get the Eva foam? it's so expensive here in Italy
I get big rolls at my local big box hardware store, It's pretty cheap, like around $30. I am not sure where to get it in Italy, I wonder if anyone wants to chime in and help out?
Aaawww!! That would be the price i pay a 100x100 cm sheet 4mm width. :( will try to find it out of Italy for sure.thanks a lot for your answer
When you pulled out that deodorant, I dead ass thought that you were going to do a sponsorship for native deodorant 😂
Well this is gonna take longer than an evening messing with foam :)
Can you make a painting technique video?
Yep, I know I need to, just seems to take me a while to get around to it. Thanks for the reminder!
Now to see someone make this out of metal
As always : amazing :)
Fantastic:-) ! thanx for your speedy reply Chris I've watched your vids and more in the morning Wow Love it :-))
