    The bug-killing chemical in question: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrethrin
    It seems to be slowly replacing Pyrethroids (the artificial version) due to their higher ability to biodegrade compared to the artificial version which can stick around a good while. Transfluthrin it seems can bidegrade pretty fast as well which is why it's used in indoor pesticides frequently in addition to being super potent and fast acting compared to the originals.

      TheRealColBosch Actually, If you are flooding the volume of a space with their poison for area denial then attracting them to it is not necessarily desirable since the whole idea is to deny them use of the treated area and kill any who venture into that space. As an airborne treatment in an enclosed space the entire (air) volume of the room is toxic to most flying insects. Be aware, though, that this toxin is also very toxic to fish (mammal toxicity is very low as mammals have an enzyme that quickly metabolizes and deactivates the poison so low-level exposure is typically safe) so I’m not sure how safe this would be to use in a room/home with aquarium fish since room air is typically pumped into the aquarium to aerate the water (though one could certainly relocate an air pump outdoors if necessary to draw in untreated air).

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins 5 років тому +1

      @@ethanpoole3443 Pyrethroids will also take out any cats that enter the treated area, because they lack that enzyme (glucuronidase) you mentioned. Not sure if this applies to all felines or only domestic cats. And yeah, I know I wouldn't use the stuff near an aquarium because it only takes a ridiculously tiny amount to kill fish.

    Back in the 60s & 70s the Gulf Oil Company produced a product known as the "No Pest Strip" which was a semi-soft slab of plastic(?) that was unwrapped and slid into a foil coated paper enclosure with holes all around it. You would hang it in an area and bugs would be repelled or killed. A similar product is available today from a company called "Hot Shot" and labeled as the "No Pest Strip 2". Similar concept to this item.
    This product reminds me of the room fragrance devices that use an oil in a little fan box that runs every few minutes to kill or mask odors. They also have replaceable supplies of the active agent and I would not be surprised if the mechanisms came from the same factory. They work almost identically.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins 5 років тому

      Gulf Oil? The ones we used to get were made by - or at least branded by - Shell Oil.
      Frank Zappa immortalized the Shell pest strip in the song "Magdalena", which contains the lyric: "I saw you standing under the Shell pest strip late last night,
      In the light, With your little nipples protruding through your little see-thru thingie"

    • @RuneTheFirst
      @RuneTheFirst 5 років тому

      Oop! You're right. I was confusing it with Gulf insect spray . Yeah, Shell offered the strips in the US until fears of cancer got them to stop.. Hot Shot now offers them under their brand with the CA cancer warning that is on everything these days and widely ignored. Shell still sells them south of the border.

      @@ShyToad I am not advocating their use either. Don't have any in the house. Haven't for decades. I merely note that they are still out there (even at Amazon & WalMart) today. The only change from the original is that today's version is mounted in a plastic housing so there is no handling of the strip itself by the consumer. It seems this Chinese device works in a similar manor but uses a slightly different formula.

      Nothing wrong with that. Often the first digit is used to designate a subassembly or section of a circuit. Not much point in this one, but maybe the standard setting of the design software they used. You'll sometimes also see RPxx, CPxx aso. for parts in the power supply part for example. That makes it much easier if several people are designing different parts of the circuit.

    • @ElmerFuddGun
      @ElmerFuddGun 5 років тому +1

      @@superdau - I understand that and am actually working on a circuit now with a similar numbering system. But like you said there isn't much point here with only one PCB in the product. I find it just makes more of a mess on the PCB silkscreen especially when parts are closely packed. And if the count is low you can also save a character by having numbers over 50 mean X, etc. I'm just not a fan of longer IDs and the mess it _can_ add to the PCB.

    1. may be a good idea to wash hands after handling the cartridge just like you should after handling solder and other lead containing products.
    2. that battery is a very flimsy sort of drm you could just using a voltage regulator or even a resistive voltage dropper connect to the batteries in the bottom to trick the unit into believing that the cartridge is in place.
    3. you can then refill the cartridge by soaking the paper filter media in a bowl of the liquid if you can buy it in bulk

    It's probably nice to know that Xiamo in China is more of a generic electronics brand. Much like Philips or LG. Also safe to note that many a times a Chinese brand product physically from China, is worse than a Chinese brand product aimed at Europe. A good example of this is the brand DJI - their products in China are shit. But (the same!) products in Europe are brilliant. I won't be surprized of other Chinese brands suffer the same problem.
    However, on the box for the cartridge, there is some Japanese text in the bottom right corner. It says "shiimotto" but with my Japanese being limited, I don't know what it means. Want it could mean, is that it was shipped from Japan, and this product *might* have been produced for overseas countries, rather than domestic, giving it a possible quality boost.

      From a video I saw on youtube (so a totally reliable source), Xiaomi makes diverse unrelated products, including umbrellas. The economic conditions in China are such that any company that gains a reputation for making decent goods can turn itself into a brand name for anything. Provided it manages to maintain consistency of design, performance and quality across all the products it can be a very successful strategy. I'm talking about more than just shoving your name on any piece of crap made by somebody else (i.e., Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka, Trump etc.), I'm talking about producing decent product whatever that product is.

    • @Klassenfeind

      They actually cooperate with independent companies. I have a whole bunch of Xiaomi products, really weird ones like water pollution checker, backpack, Biro, Bluetooth water kettle, LED bulbs and home security cameras. Most of them run under the Mi branding and/or are licensed. excellent quality.

    • @bskull3232
      @bskull3232 5 років тому

      Not exactly. They rebrand and license. Xiaomi sells and licenses its logo, but 3rd party manufacturers (usually No. 2 player in an industry wanting to beat No. 1 but is willing to give up marketing freedom) actually manufacture them. Xiaomi only actually makes phones and laptops and some close accessories.

    In the UK you can buy Pyrethrins (which you could add to a vegetable oil to slow down evaporation) but I'm not sure how healthy any of this is.
    BTW - Neem oil (from a tree used in Ayurvedic medicine) is a great safe natural pesticide used for centuries in India. 'Trouble is it smells a little like rancid garlic!

    I'm guessing it's a lot like the repellent used in flea collars. So that mesh would have the volatile active ingredient slow release from another waxy compound. And that stuff is fairly safe short of ingesting it, although it may be bad to have around cats or fish. (Both are rather sensitive to the toxins in pyrethrin/permethrin compounds.)

    To be honest I am always wary of anything that can damage Nerves and your nervous system, not fearfully just very cautious as nervous problems freak me out. Having watched a Uncle slowly loose motor functions from MS was quite eye opening of you take my meaning, Parkinson's is also a condition that I at times sorry about developing. I do currently have a weird problem with my left arm and the nerves inside it, they are all fully functional as my doctor tested with nerve conduction machine pretty much a Fluke for nerves I would love to see you take one apart but I doubt it would be easy to get a hold of items designed for medical services. Then again some of the stuff you have shown I'd never even bother looking for, mainly because I didn't know if was a thing till I watched said video.
    Ah right my arm, well all the nerves seem to be functioning by the tests but my arm feels off like a polarity reversal of something is the best way to describe the feeling. My arm is always weaker than my right and it has far less stamina, my doctor plans to follow up on it with MRIs after this viral thing is done but the only thing I know for sure it wasn't a stroke like so many people tell me when I describe it.
    How do I know, two reasons my brain functions perfectly fine if a bit more Obsessive on phobias at times and two my doctor told me as long as I have had this problem (Granted I only recently found a good Doctor again, most have been far too over taxes by workload or were quacks. Don't get me started on the woman who nearly fossilized my father with his calcium suplements.)if it had been a stroke I'd be dead because without proper treatment strokes tend to cause brain shutdown like a cascading failure in a circuit.

    You know...there are more than 30 different kinds of mosquitoes native to the UK. I assume people just think they're all just gnats and/or midges, because those are used as a blanket term for any small flying insect that might bite you.
    Mosquitoes are very common - if you see a bitey little bastard high up on the wall inside your house, it's probably a mosquito. It's hunting you, waiting for it's moment to feast.
