  • Silver Lake is an easy to moderate day hike. The trail starts at the top of the switch backs. It is easy to follow. This first section of this trail is a bit steep but short lived.
This trail eventually approaches a rock band that from below looks a little sketchy. Once at the bottom of the short cliff the route up and through the rock is obvious. There are a few old steel cables in this area that can be used as a handrail in a few places. When we did this trip there was also a rope in place. Keep in mind that these hand lines are nylon and nylon breaks down quickly in the sun and weather. The line could also be damaged from rock fall. I never trust something that is in place like this. It is best to bring your own if you think you may need it. One thing is certain here, you do not want to fall. It would be quite a drop.
After the rock band the trail levels out up to the lake and ghost town. It is no more than two miles to the lake one way.
Silver Lake is in quite a pretty location surrounded by high peaks. The lake is not as picturesque like Ice Lake or Columbine Lake due to the debris that has been littered in it, mainly steel. Old artifacts litter the shore. The structures that remain are really fun to explore.
I included maps with brief descriptions and coordinates in the video.
The road to the trailhead is good although steep towards the end. Jeep, SUV or truck will have no problems here. Four wheel drive is not a bad idea due to the steep section.

This is very interesting to see that some of the buildings are still standing at Silver Lake. When my family backpacked there (around 1970) the mine and equipment and buildings at the trailhead were still standing and in pretty good shape. We stashed our Tote-Gotes inside the mine building and hiked up. The cabin that you show at the lake with the stove inside is where we stayed a couple nights. We found some pretty nice purple bottles. Thank you for all your fine films.

Hey there! Did you camp up at silver lake at the impacted sites? If so did you have to have a permit?

No we did not. Just did it as a day hike. I don't know if you need a permit but I don't think so.

Hi there. New subscriber. Thank you very much for sharing your hike! The area that you scrambled up, do you think a dog could negotiate that? I take mine up scree areas and boulder fields quite a bit; so he is pretty sure footed.

I did not see any dogs on that one. If you have a harness for them it would be a good idea. A fall would be very bad.

@@danahollister4084 ok...thank you very much! Silverton has been completely shut down during the stay at home initiative for the virus. They are just now opening up. It will probably be a couple of more weeks before the alpine country is open, but I will put this one high on the to-do list. Also, we LOVE Porphry Basin. I will go try that Columbine Lake approach from there.
Thanks for the dog tip! I will definitely take the dog with. He just turned a year old and since his growth plates are set, the mileage will get increased. Great tip on the harness! I will definitely get one. There are a ton of scrambly areas around; just to get that last boost to get over the obstacle. He takes the Banzai mentality going down. So a top belay will work great. Safe travels!!
