Mats in '88 had one of the most amazing years that somehow went under the radar. Even among tennis people if you asked "Who won 3/4 of the Grand Slam tournaments in 1988" you might get a variety of answers.
He had shin splints at the end of 88. By his own admission, he said it happened to quickly, achieving No 1 etc and lost some desire on top of the things you mentioned. Disappointing as he was my favourite player along with Mcenroe, total opposites. 👍
Always seemed like Connors had to work so hard for every point with those ground strokes. At first it was only a couple of guys like Borg and Vilas that had topspin forehands. As Jimmy got older it was almost everybody and they would just lift the ball back while Jimmy had to be perfect hitting the ball low and trying to work his way into the net.
Mats' career is under respected... until Roger came along, then Rafa and Djoker, only Jimmy and Mats had won GSs on 3 surfaces (clay, grass, hard court) (MW won on grass at Kooyong (Aussie Open twice)) in fact, MW won on 3 surfaces 2x; Jimmy did it once (Forest Hills clay in 1976 his only clay GS)
Connors did beat Wilander at the Tokyo Open, as I recall. In those days it was exhibition tennis but later became part of the ATP tour. Top players took part even in the pre-tour days.
@@Diatonic1958 In exhibition and Wilander was known to be taking exhibitions less serios than Connors I remeber from WIlanders biography -not on purpose just in nature he could not raise the same focus (or it is an exjuse ;)). I also believe Connors might have won on the seniour tour. But Connors game fitted Wilander perfectly as he took his backhand early and could use Connors game, was cleverer with quick feet, could run forever and had less error in his game due to the top spin. He was also 11 years younger of course.
@@mattstyles1244 who was one of the smartest players ever. Developed a beautiful slice backhand, served volley more and more and attacked the net more often as he developed, especially in the 88 US Opera final. JC played pretty much the same but hit flatter and more aggressively. John Mcenroe, there's style. Also JC was a pig of a person a lot. Each to their own. 👍
Doctor Bopp is Back ❤

@@WONGLER Interessant, das wusste ich gar nicht. Vielen Dank für die Reaktion!

Mats Wilander was the living Ball Machine and Jimmy Connors the hardcore fighter💪😎👍!

Great players, great match!
Super ! Hast Du aus demselben Jahr 1988 noch andere Wilander / Edberg Matches ? French und US Open Finale z.B. ?
Excellent upload once again !
Do you have Edberg vs Lavalle and vs Boetsch from Australian Open 93 and Edberg vs Santoro from Roland Garros 95?
My only complaint- please leave the score on the screen.
great upload :)
I didn’t like Conners but he was not the player you wanted across the net.109 titles is awesome.
Awesome share anymore Agassi please boss ✌️

Mats Wilander had Connors' number.

Mats never lost to Jimmy in a tournament. ( age difference is part of that )
Connors never beat Wilander. Their head to head is 5-0 in Wilander's favour, plus one walkover.
Nice
Wilander never had a big serve and didn't play a particularly aggressive game but Connors just couldn't beat him
@@capricornmagic63 Wilander much smarter and had less errors in his game and could keep the ball in play forever.

Wilander was effective but not a Stylish player like Connors!
Really lmao.
@@mrbungle7586 Yes I find Connors more exciting in game and personality. A Puncher as opposed to a counter puncher.

Each to their own. 👍
