  • This video tutorial explains you the difference between:
    - Shared Instances,
    - Dedicated Instances and
    - Instances on Dedicated Hosts.
    Don't remain confused anymore. Happy learning.
    ERRATA below --
    5:05 - Instances from other customers or shared instances (from you) can't sit on this physical host
    7:48 - You need to pay for the full physical host, as you are blocking the full host.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    UPDATE May 2017:
    There is a change which happened in May 2017 as I am able to find out. Please refer following links to read further:
    cloudcheckr.com...
    d0.awsstatic.c... (LAST PAGE of PDF)
    In May 2017, AWS declared that your application could be HIPAA complied even when you run it on Shared instances (you don't necessarily need Dedicated instances anymore for HIPAA compliance). Post this, the other restriction has been dropped. Now, shared instances in your account can run on the host where your dedicated instance is running.
    Earlier the isolation was from 2 things:
    1. Instances of other AWS account
    2. Instances which are not dedicated instances.
    Really nice video. The difference between dedicated hosts and dedicated instances is explained very well.
    Dedicated instance means on instance restart its host can change. however, at any point in time, the host will have instances from the same AWS account.
    Dedicated host means that on instance restart its host will always remain the change. This is useful if you have hardware (CPU, MAC) bound licenses wherein you need the same host machine to apply the license.
      Dedicated host means that on instance restart its host will always remain the "change".
      You may want to correct the statement above as - Dedicated host means that on instance restart its host will always remain the "same".
    Sirji,
    1. How many instances can be run on a dedicated host? [Just a rough number would do ]
    2. So even in a dedicated instance, I own the whole host, right?
    3. The only benefit between a dedicated instance and a dedicated host is the stop and start option?
    4. So when I have to choose between a dedicated host vs placement group, Obv dedicated hosts is better off than a placement group, right? Coz, in placement-group, Amazon promises only within the same availability zone but not within the same host?
    pls clarify
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  7 років тому +1
      1. I have explained it in pricing video - aws.amazon.com/ec2/dedicated-hosts/pricing/
      2. you do, but you cannot choose the host and host changes when you stop n start the instance. in case of DH, it won't change.
      3. as stated above.
      4. Placement groups are limited to same AZ. AWS tries to launch your instances on same host (if launched in one shot). But, in case of Dedicated host, the instances would remain on the same host always. This could be problematic in case of host level issues.
      More in the SysOps class. :)
    Thank you Knowledge India for such good video.
    I had some doubts.
    1. Let's say, I launched an dedicated instance(i1) and it got host(h1) and I launched another instance (i2), will it get the same host.
    2. If I have 3 dedicated instances on the same host, and I stopped one of the instance, and assume, when I start it, it got some other host. So now I have two hosts, one has my 2 instances and other one has 1 and no other AWS customer can launch any kind of(shared or dedicated) instances on those hosts. Isn't it like we are occupying two host in this case.
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  7 років тому
      Please SHARE if you have liked the video. Watch other videos as well.
      1. It depends on instance type and its sizing. It may come on same host, but not for sure.
      2. In case of dedicated instances you do not get to know the host on which they are running. As explained above, multiple instances (if of same instance-type) might run on one host; but anyway you do not get to choose or see that.
      See billing video to understand the billing.
      Thank you Knowledge India, my first doubt is clear.
      To make my question simple, let me ask it in another way:
      You told that in case of Dedicated Host, a customer will be holding whole physical host, so he has to pay for that complete host, which makes Dedicated Host tenancy the costliest one. However, you have also said that once a Dedicated instance start running on some host, no other can run his/her shared or dedicated instances on that host. So isn't this also like holding the complete physical host?
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  7 років тому
      it is. But in dedicated instance, host will change on stop/start.
    • @ganeshramachandran1687
      @ganeshramachandran1687 6 років тому
      Correct, but the question here is, after the instance restart, if the instance started on a different host (for example on Host B) than it initially spawned from (for example Host A), does any additional hardware cost involved for the host (Host B) as the hardware could only host instances from my AWS account.
      Kindly refer the link below and help us with the above question, please
    Hello
    So you mentioned that with Dedicated Instance - if you start stop the instance (i-201), the physical host (H-105) can change to new one (H-107).
    What if I had 3 dedicated instances (i-201, i-202, i-203), and if i start stop i-201, will the host (H-105) for the other two instances (i-202 & i-203) also change to new host (H-107), even if the other two instances are up and running and haven't been stopped and started?
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  6 років тому
      The host for an instance would not change if that instance has not been stopped. So answer to you is NO - it won't change.
      So technically, it is possible for your dedicated instances to reside on different hosts.
      Thank you for you quick response.
    Thanks for the clear differentiation. However my understanding is that in the Dedicated instance scenario in the above example where its being launched in H-105 i believe other non-dedicated instances of the same customer/AWS account can run along with the Dedicated instance. Your statement mentions that H-105 can only run other Dedicated instances alone. Please confirm if my understanding is correct.
    In case of dedicated Instance, If I stopped and start again the EC2 may launch in different Host.. right? So in that case If I have 2 Dedicated Instances and I just stopped 1 Instance and start again, I might have 2 Instance in 2 different Host and In these 2 host no one can launch their instances.. right? So, here we are blocking the host environments although we are not using in full capacity...Please clarify
    Let's say I have launched two dedicated instances and both get launched on same physical host, then I stopped one of the instance and started it again and it get launched on some other physical host, so in this way I occupied two physical hosts. Considering the case I mentioned , Dedicated instances would cost me higher than Dedicated Hosts ?
    based on what u said, something does not add up for Dedicated Instances.
    Let's say if I have created a dedicated instance on H-105. I will not have any other customers creating any dedicated instance inside H-105. this would be reserved for me.
    Even though this dedicated instance is capable of created more instances I decide not to create any other dedicated instance and just go with 1 dedicated instance. Isnt Amazon losing on money and isnt the extra memory and CPU being un-used here? why would Amazon do that?
    Hi KI, thanks for the videos, But there was no complete answers on one Q: Reproduced below,
    In my a/c, I have 5 dedicated running instances (Say all of same type and running on same Physical Host say H1) if one dedicated instance is RESTARTED,
    1) Only restarted dedicated instance occupy another dedicated Host (Say H2) for my a/c and other will 4 will continue on H1?
    2) All 5 instance will go to another Host (I believe it is not feasible and we can't move running instances to another phhysical machine)
    Please clarify considering if one of the instance is restarted. Thanks
    If different tendency models from the same AWS account can share the same hardware then does this case apply on the dedicated host as well?
    2) If "yes" is the answer for question 1, then it has the instances from other account, then it appears like a shared tenancy after restart, right?
    Hi, can you please give a real life use case where dedicated instances are used? Dedicated hosts are understandable for security purposes. But not clear where dedicated instances would be needed.
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  7 років тому +4
      Dedicated Hosts are used when customer doesn't want the physical host to change and hence re-use their existing hardware bound licenses.
      Dedicated Instances are used for certain compliances by industries like banking / healthcare for the hardware isolation purposes. i.e. hardware on which my instance runs no other customer's instance should share that.
      1. the requirement is still the same. if you create a dedicated instance, you can be sure that it will not share the host with any other customer.
      2. with the change I mentioned, your shared tenancy instance & dedicated instance can sit on the same host now. But, you do not have a way to control this factor for the shared instance. AWS optimizes the placement on its side.
      Thanks Pratap for raising this. Because of your comment I had to re-visit the documentation and I found what you pointed out is correct. But, this is a change happened in May 2017 as I am able to find out.
      Please refer following links to read further:
      cloudcheckr.com/2017/05/aws-hipaa-non-dedicated-instances/
      d0.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/compliance/AWS_HIPAA_Compliance_Whitepaper.pdf (LAST PAGE of PDF)
      In May 2017, AWS declared that your application would be HIPAA complied even when you run it on Shared instances (you don't necessarily need Dedicated instances anymore). Post this, the other restriction has been dropped. Earlier the isolation was from 2 things:
      1. Instances of other AWS account
      2. Instances which are not dedicated instances.
      I thank you again for raising it. I shall update this in Description as well.
    Hi sir,
    Nice video...I have a small doubt..
    if tenancy is dedicated instance,physical host will be dedicated to our account.so we can launch our(own account) instances only.for suppose if 3 instances(A,B,C) are running on host(tenancy as dedicated instance).if i stop and start one instance(A) that instance is launched on another host..so what about remaining two instances(B,C)?? is these two instances(B,C) are also launched in new host or stayed in same host....
    Thanks in advance
    • @knowledgeindia
      @knowledgeindia  7 років тому
      In the above case, any instance will move to a new host only on stop&start. It won't move because another instance moved.
      Also, guarantee is not given that your 3 instances would run on one host only.. Only thing what AWS says is on the host, where your instance runs - no other customer's instances would run.
