I was in Rio for 15 days 4 years back and it was a wonderful experience. Brazil is known for violant crimes so note these points - 1. Always book hotel in good areas . This is not a good area they are in. 2. Avoid taking your phone out on the road even in day time. Take inexpensive phone out of hotel. 3. Incase of robbery, immediately hand over your stuff. Not worth getting stabbed or shot. 4. Police uses armoured cars for patrolling in Rio. So imagine scale of violence. 5. Wear ordinary clothes and no jewellery. 6. Carry your cash in different parts of your clothing. 7. I used metro and buses. No issues. 8. Its a beautiful place with nice people.

Yatri I went to northeast Brazil 20 years ago when there was no internet. Nobody spoke English even in the airport. You are lucky you had a small incident nothing major. Be careful of your passport. I told you when you were riding the desert train it’s not anywhere safe in Latin America and Central America is so bad they walk thousands of miles to escape violence. This is not mirzapur but the full picture. Police are like in India so plan accordingly. Also in USA they would pull a gun in some cities including all big tourist cities if you go in the wrong area and you could lose your wallet car phone or worse you could get very hurt. Always check which neighborhood you are in and which areas to specifically avoid on each country in TripAdvisor. USA is safe if you are careful. I feel sorry for you man.... What he basically told was he got attacked by two guy with a knife and then eventually got robbed of his phone... After a while he got to the city police and narrated his ordeal that he has been robbed and the guys who robbed him are still there, on that spot, laughing and giggling with one another!! But to his suprise the police told they can't take any form of actions on those dudes as long as you aren't dead or robbed off something very valuable!! This was the gist of the whole conversation!!
