    Andy Cohen was shocked by his great-grandfather's arduous journey to owning his own business. Are there any entrepreneurs in your family line?

    I really wish these episodes would be one “normal” person and one famous person. Famous people can afford this whenever they want, us “normal” people can’t and I think most viewers would find it just as interesting.

      When Finding Your Roots first began in 2012, it was during black history month and featured stories about ordinary black Americans; there was one black celebrity versus two none celebrities ratio. As the show evolved, Dr. Gates would hear from whites saying how come you don't feature us, but as usual, anytime blacks do something for themselves, whites want to be a part of it. You would think that since PBS has been featuring stories about the white immigrants' journey to America for decades that it would be enough; however, bowing to pressure from his bosses at PBS, he began focusing on black and white celebrities, which I believe cheats the rest of black America because our stories need to be told before time runs out, our black elders are leaving us at a faster rate than any other ethnic group. Since we are an oral people, those stories would be lost to history and not passed down to the next generation.

    The town called Bialystok is where Bialys originated. A bagel like food that sadly has gone out of fashion. H&H in NYC sold them. And there was a bakery that only sold Bialys in LA, but closed almost 20 years ago. Many Jews left Bialystok during the Pogroms and came to America, including my great-grandparents (who were first cousins, which was very common at the time), where they found a better, "easier" life. The ones who stayed faced a horrible fate at the hands of the Bolsheviks, during WW1, and then, of course, during WW2 and the Holocaust.

As an adult, he moved to Russia for a better future, and was very optimistic about the Russian Revolution. But then both his own sons were executed by Stalin on false charges of treason, and he himself died of starvation in the Siege of Leningrad. A heartbreaking life story.

      @OshunEnergy It was not Black vs. White back then (meaning anything before even the 1960's!). White protestants were the acceptable norm as far as the "right kind of person". Then there were Catholics, the Jews, the Irish, the Polish, the Italians, all being Catholic and arriving thru Ellis Island in steerage with nothing in their pockets, on the East Coast. And the Asian population (mostly Chinese), arriving on the West Coast, and being equally hated. That's why America became "a melting pot". And they were all equally hated and treated equally poorly. And many still are!

Our grandmother from my mothers side, was born from a sexual worker lady in Colombia and the one who raised her was the lady who delivered her. Then my grandma married at 15 but my biological grandfather wasn’t her husband, and we all look so different, my grandmother won’t disclose who is the father of my mother and at this point… I don’t think she remembers it anymore, her memory is getting lost and sometimes she would make up stories to fill the gaps in the story. My great great grandfather left Ireland w his wife on a coffin ship. Coffin ships were repurposed slave ships after the slave trading had been outlawed, principally enforced by the British navy. Men and women were separated. When he got to upper Canada he couldn't find his wife who has died and was thrown overboard with no record. He had to wait seven years before he got her declared civilly dead. This was from my great grandmother's cousin to my grandmother to my mother to us. Church records in Ontario Canada confirmed this. He then married my great great grandmother and here I am. We were always proud of our ancestors and keep their memories alive.

    Andy is a hard worker. He worked hard to get where he is today . I watched an interview with him how he worked as a journalist and started humbly before he got his big break. He is all show but never forgets his parents. He invites his parents all the time on his shows and always pays tribute to them because of where he is today .
    You can tell they are proud of him and support his career. I hate when people put him down - because he is really a family man in real life. Much respect to this man , his children and family.

    I find Andy's remarks fascinating and quite amusing. . I live in a country when we have many first and second generation migrants who have become successful. I've witnessed all the VERY hard work they have done and they are now my neighbors and friends. They are truly extraordinary people. It's nice to see him be so humble and acknowledge his own privilege. A beautiful story.

    There blows the myth that all Jews are wealthy people.

    • @CharlotteIssyvoo
      @CharlotteIssyvoo 2 роки тому +28

      The vast majority of American Jews come from a background of extreme poverty and persecution, like the one depicted here. My own family is just one of those families. Most were also running from the pogroms, government sanctioned, anti-Semitic riots, in which Jews' property was looted and destroyed, and Jews themselves were raped, beaten, and killed. My grandfather had a scar on his head from the kick of a Cossack's (Russian soldier's) horse when he was a toddler. The myth of our wealth is nothing but more anti-Semitism.

      @@lightyagami3492 That myth is straight up anti-Semitism. Most eastern European Jews (ie most Jews) lived in extreme poverty, brought on by anti-Semitic laws that regulated what jobs they could have, where they could work, what education they could get (not much), whether or not they could own property, etc. That's not to mention the pogroms which led many to flee as refugees and move to America, where they again faced anti-Semitic laws, but not as many.

    Andy’s background is extremely interesting. You should read a book called The Thirteenth Tribe. It explains how the Russians converted to the Hebrew religion. One can also verify this study through military history.

      The author of the 13th Tribe admitted in his biography that He. Brought back the idea of the Khazars to stop anti-Jewish hate
      DNA studies have shown that the Jews do not come from the Khazars. But they are descendants of the Ancient Israelites.
