I see that in ex-Soviet countries lot of people speak to you in Russian as they expect foreigners to know it better than their local languages :) I have experienced it myself too when traveling through Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus
Cause that was main official language for all Soviet Union. So everobody who was studing in school before USSR collapsed should know Russian. In addition Belarus speaks Russian (Belarusian only in villages), Ukraine - west ukrainian, east - russian and surzhik (russian mixed with some ukrainian words). Georgia and Armenia - people who lived in ussr knows russian, but young people 50/50.
In Kyrgyzystan and Khazahstan Russian is one of the official languages alongside Kyrgyz, and Khazak. Many of the former Soviet republics were not just part of the Soviet Union , But were actually part of Russia for a couple of centuries. Many Russians settled, and at times intermarried with the locals. In Kazakhstan Russians were almost half the population when they got their independence. So it is natural that to many Russian is almost a native language. It was also a lingua franca, as some of the republics had multiple language spoken by multiple ethnic groups, And if you wanted to speak to people in the village on the other side of the mountain, you had to learn Russian.
@1:14 I absolutely love the drone footage. Especially for this location it really helps to understand how large the area is and how many people are there.
