What’s hilarious to me: In live music, everyone onstage is playing along to a backing track. There’s a metronome keeping everyone in time through their ear buds, and there’s always a count-off to the start of each song that only the band hears in their ears…. So basically, he rants and rants, but waits until that count off starts in his earbuds to start the first line of an offensive joke 😂

But The Rolling Stones, Queens of the Stone Age, Miles Davis and any jazz performer, Bob Dylan, it’s all live. At most they might have count ins in the earbud but beyond that it’s 100% live. Live music also sounds better than prerecorded tracks if done right.

In the last 20 years or so there have been a lot of bands (especially prog/art rock/indie) bringing prerecorded tracks to live shows to try to emulate their studio albums. Sometimes you just can't fit the necessary musicians on the stage. Does adding a prerecorded synth/choir/triangle/sound effect part to an otherwise live band detract from their musicianship? I would argue no. See the air raid siren on War Pigs and any of Pink Floyd's live shows. Even pre-recorded "lip syncing" gets a pass from me to be honest. From a musician's perspective you always get a kick out of bands who do every part live a little different each time, but Joe and Jane public just want to enjoy going to see their favourite albums being played live just like on the recording. Sometimes it's just the vocal track and the energy and good vibes between performer and audience that makes it a live show. And that's ok. I used to be a purist too and look down on pop and other genres I didn't enjoy, but music is for everyone. Them enjoying rap and pop doesn't stop us from enjoying our rock and jazz.
