loved the way the one guy worded it " oh lets see,,, im gonna take the big boy" lol. its like that here where im from. we have a total of 27 guys who work at my station and havfe like 6 engines and were all vol. and sometimes when we roll on calls our first engine on scene will sometimes be one guy til some guys get on scene. great vid
Sorry, I gotta agree with those who are critical of this fd's effort to confront this fire. Given the smoke conditions, it took far too long to actually start knocking it down. I don't care who the company is, or if the garage is vacant or not, this looks like poor firefighting tactics. Anyone who is remotely subjected to the toxic smoke should be wearing SCBA. Period.
i can agree with you on all except one point. If you're talking about the officer running the camera, I'd imagine he's one of their Public Information Officers, who's JOB it is to get the worker on film/gather information. You can see the chief's buggy pull up following the truck company in the beginning of the film
At the end of the video, you see a FF pickup a ladder and proceed to walk down the D side of the building, WITHOUT using an SCBA. Why would you purposely inhale toxic smoke??? In Toronto Canada, TOO MANY firefighters are dying before retirement due to smoke inhalation received over the years. Also, too many firefighters are dying within 4 - 5 years of retirement due to job related cancers caused by smoke inhalation. A lot of these guys started prior to SCBA's coming on the trucks. WEAR YOURS!
They completely remove the door so they could advance the hoseline in and hit the seat of the fire. Just spraying water into the building without advancing the hoseline would not do anything to extenguish it, but just "push" it.
Lots of firefighters but it seemed to me they had no real plan they ripped open the door without a charged line then it seemed they had no idea what to do sorry guys
I'm not a firefighter, but it surprised me to see the men bust open the door, and then do a lot of other stuff, without any water in use during the entire video. I would've thought that as soon as the door was opened, they would've been actively spraying the interior.
I think I understand it now...after watching some of these vids I have seen large fires knocked down very quickly with a well placed stream of water or, as in this case, not so quickly with no stream of water. So that means if the fire is hit by water the fire goes out and the fun is over. See, I got it. Come on guys, vacant or not there is someone's property in there and If it were mine I would appreciate the well placed stream.
I read a bunch of comments and have this to say. 1. You want to surgically extinguish a fire using just enough water to stop it Quickly! You don't want to run out, create too much water damage or look like an idiot squirting water into a smoke filled garage with no idea where it's going. 2. The fire is smoldering and suffocating which gives you a little time to Think. Thinking is very underrated especially at fires. 3. Get a line ready. A 1-3/4" line is plenty and is maneuverable. 4. Do a 360 to look for windows and Man doors. 5. When the water is ready, get the doors open and then close them. You are now ready for access. Start breaking out windows especially the gable end ones. Cross ventilation will start moving smoke so you can see the burning material or at least, have a better idea where it is. OPEN the nozzle to a 35% cone and hit the hot spots for a few seconds ONLY! NO, solid streams at close range. That's how you waste water and create the dreaded steam you guys are so terrified of. 6. With a couple of escape routes such as the man and garage doors, you can start moving in to search and destroy. Make believe that you are going to run out of water at any time This will make you Have to Think rather than standing or sitting like a statue and just drowning the property.
how do you people not know anything about PGFD they are like the most famous fd in the world.. I think they know a little bit about firefighting there has already been 5 working fires today. so they know what they are doing. dont talk shit on pgfd..
@bullzisnipr3 Well said, i understand you. Guys, use your brains not your ball..... Vacant structure fires are a totally different ball game, high risk/low reward vs low risk/high reward. Remember the Worchester 6........ how soon we forget.
But when did they advance the line? Never. If they wanted to stay defensive, that's fine but USE THE WATER. Line was charged at 1:40 and at 3:00 they entered for about five seconds and then withdrew. Water was never seen used. Door was off. Operate straight stream into garage and take advantage of reach of stream to start cooling area. I'd love to see the rest of the video. I bet they stood around making openings, even in roof, until fire was blowing out everywhere. Then they probably used water
I have the privilege to watch Professional Firefighters in Southern California daily with my job. And after watching dozens of Volunteer Fire Departments work fires on UA-cam. It's scary to see how inept Volunteers are. I don't understand why so many cities across America risk "lives and property" by continuing to use Volunteer Firefighters! I appreciate Volunteer Firefighters for giving their free time and service to the public. But people need to understand that Volunteer Firefighters are doing it for free for a reason. Because they don't have what it takes to get hired as a Professional Firefighter. This is just flat out pathetic!
help me out here no 360 but punch threw doors prior to command report to dispatch was any one assigned alpha or Charlie sector ? yes I know single story wood frame no exposures but still size up is size up and div 1 and div2 and safety?
Seems like the main thing is to get several hoses going at once and with spray, not stream. stream is only for distance, you want spray to actually stop a fire. Make everything too wet to burn.
Anybody know what the plan is?.... ok first lets open the garage door, then go in for a few seconds, Naw lets go around the back. Ladder the alpha side, no the charlie delta corner instead, oh yeah Junior, go ahead and break out some windows while we figure out where we'll make entry... Sorry guys but fancy equipment and lots of FFs on scene dose not a good ICS structure make. Looks like most every one was freelancing
wow !!! quanto despreparo desses bombeiros ,eles ficam ali analizando , ventilando o fogo ! tem q chegar e começar a tirar aqueles armarios para o fogo nao se alastrar ! tao de brincadeira ???
@bullzisnipr3 So cause its a vacant building you guys just let it burn and walk around and watch? Honestly the dumbest thing i have heard to date.. Don't get me wrong their not worth firefighter safety, but that don't mean you cant spray water in through the big ass door opening your crew just made.... That guy on nozzle would have probably had knock down in no time if not pulled out to go protect a house next door that was clearly not in any danger...( he shouldn't have entered)
the smoke pushing out of that building says there is a very angry fire inside
loved the way the one guy worded it " oh lets see,,, im gonna take the big boy" lol.

Now that's how you open a garage door!! Good job guys.
There's nothing like watching our PGFD brothers work while hearing those Powercall and Q's approaching! Nice vid 800 :)
powercall biatch...and id say, alike others. that must have been one hell of a fire load in there, cuz thats some thick, volume pushed smoke

First arriving engine had two personell. Truck was fully staffed. We ended up having about 30 firefighters there witin minutes.

very poor attack. God I hope they are not paid fire fighters they are very slow
looks like its gonna flash torwards the end of the video
your right - it's a "VACANT GARAGE." Firefighter safety was priority one.
looks like it was a pretty good fire.
Those are some bad ass truckies!
first truck in understaffed? there was 6 guys there plus pump operators there. how many do you need for a smale garage fire?
They completely remove the door so they could advance the hoseline in and hit the seat of the fire. Just spraying water into the building without advancing the hoseline would not do anything to extenguish it, but just "push" it.

Looks like Billy Smith pulling line?
At 4:28 what shoots behind the firefighter on the c side of the structure
Great video!!!!
im from NY. most of long island is paid. how many depts. in prince georges county are paid? and how many depts. are there? we have 10 in the town
What Trucks at this fire , The 12 Truck??
starting at 3:55, this is why I love the sounds of PG!
@skateshow99 so are you saying that us volys are slow
They had a charged 2 1/2" line there ready to go. I don't know why they don't use LDH for supply lines though.
Lets open the door but whatever you do DO NOT put water on it.
i dont think it was a good idea to start opening that door without a charged line ready'

@joek0617 Because volunteers don't always have 6 guys. This engine could have been out driver training for all we know.
Needs a PPV fan
Lot of smoke for a small garage.
7 9 8 roof cut used or whaty
Wonder if they ever put the water from "the big boy" hose on the fire?
perfect for vertical vent\
@bullzisnipr3 Well said, i understand you. Guys, use your brains not your ball..... Vacant structure fires are a totally different ball game, high risk/low reward vs low risk/high reward. Remember the Worchester 6........ how soon we forget.
@PGFD800
2 firefighters on a truck = fully staffed in your department?
somebody wanna vent that roof?
@PGFD800 why would an engine have only 2 people, they should have at alest 4, ususally 5 or 6
hey is this Prince George VA?
After years of vol firefighting I have neveer seen such a screwed up bunch of noconmitment firefighters towards application of water.

Arson?
Why would they introduce fresh oxygen to the fire without having some sort of water readily available?
Sry d side I ment the running man I headed to c

Scoop It looks like it's you and me guy. Solid streams are worthless at close distance and only work at long distance with a spotter.
Wonder why i have so many negative votes on a simple & honest question?
because it makes us look cool and our faces get all soot filled for the news cameras that are coming!
Anybody know what the plan is?.... ok first lets open the garage door, then go in for a few seconds, Naw lets go around the back. @bullzisnipr3 I guess, but you get where i was coming from with my comment.
Stay safe
