- For India, Captain Vikram Batra had an unflinching love. But there’s another side to the braveheart, who sacrificed his life during the Kargil War to defend the nation and his fellow soldiers.
Meet his then girlfriend - Dimple Cheema.
Speaking to The Quint on his birth anniversary, Dimple remembers her memories with Vikram - now from 17 years ago.
It was in 1995 at Punjab University when Dimple first met Vikram. Little did she know that it was just the beginning of a beautiful story that would stay with her forever.
Dimple fondly remembers the initial months she spent with Vikram in Chandigarh. He eventually left college and moved on to bigger things after his selection to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in 1996.
Their love, however, stayed strong even after Vikram moved to Dehradun. The soon-to-become Captain would come visit her in Chandigarh between his postings.
The love between the two blossomed for four years. They had plans of getting married when Vikram returned from Kargil, but as it turned out, he never did.
But Vikram’s death wasn’t the end of their love story. Dimple after the news decided to return to Chandigarh and live with what she calls “memories worth a lifetime”

She argued with her father for him and told him that if she doesn't marry Vikram Sir then she would remain unmarried. This was the level of commitment most people lack these days. How many days she able to spend with him when he was in army or able to talk to her but still she still remain calm and wait for his letter or one phone call. I watched Shershaah movie 2 days ago and I still can't thinking about the last scene🥺I knew about Kargil vijay divas but I never know abt CAPTAIN VIKRAM BATRA.....I didn't expect that he would die at the end like evry movie I thought that they would live happily at the end😥😥Oh my god like they deserve something better😔I feel so sry for her.....wish I could meet her someday...I saw that Shershah is very good movie so I decided to watch it.....I didn't know that it was a true story .I only realised at its end🥺❤❤May his soul rest in peace ....what a great soldier❤
Here after watching shershah . I was completely aware of the kargil war and pvc captain Vikram Batra sir but today I knew about dimple mam , hatts off to you mam. Being a fauji kid I know the pain but mam is made of something else. Mam is also a true soldier.❤️🇮🇳
