  • Welcome back to our channel! Do you know the term "Songkran"? Its origins and traditions are rooted in Cambodia.
The story dates back centuries, starting with the Khmer people in Cambodia. The term "Songkran" comes from Sanskrit and is significant in the Buddhist calendar. This festival, also called Choul Chnam Thmei or Khmer New Year, was traditionally celebrated in mid-April, on the 13th, 14th, and 15th, to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new year. It was a period of purification, renewal, and showing respect to ancestors. Water had an important role in the celebration, representing cleansing and good luck.
The Khmer people would go to the pagoda, take part in religious ceremonies, and do good things.
Over time, the word "Sangkran" is used for their festival, spreading and becoming a part of the Thai community's New Year celebration. In this video, we will explore the origins and traditions of the word "Sangkran" and its roots in Cambodia.
As Songkran became more popular, it changed and adjusted to fit different cultures. The Thai community, for example, embraced this lively festival and made it their own New Year celebration. They kept the main parts of Songkran, like using water for cleansing and starting anew. But they also included their own special traditions, making the celebration even more fun and happy.
One of the most significant things the Thai community has added is the water battles that are now closely associated with Songkran. In Thailand, people enthusiastically soak each other using buckets, water guns, and hoses.
But Songkran in Thailand is not only about water battles. It also includes doing good deeds at temples, giving food to monks, and releasing birds and fish into nature. These actions are believed to bring good luck in the new year. In this aspect, their culture is similar to ours in Cambodia as Buddhism.
Songkran is a special festival celebrated in Thailand. On December 8, 2023, UNESCO acknowledged "Songkran in Thailand, New Year Festival" as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition highlights the cultural significance of Songkran, not only in Thailand but also globally.
The term "Songkran" came from the Khmer people in Cambodia and later became a popular word in Thailand. It has also spread to other Southeast Asian countries, where it has been modified to suit their cultural practices and beliefs. However, the core concept of renewal and purification has remained consistent throughout its evolution.
Songkran has become a joyful festival that brings people together and renews their spirits. It's a time to cleanse ourselves, honor our ancestors, do good things, and most importantly, enjoy ourselves! With its vibrant customs and deep meaning, Songkran continues to fascinate people, making it a festival that goes beyond boundaries.
The festival called "Songkran" has a historical significance. It originated in Cambodia and has made a lasting impact on history.
Inscriptions discovered in old Cambodian temples confirm that Songkran existed and the term was used in ancient times.
These writings are evidence of the festival's long history and cultural importance over many years.
As Songkran became popular in Southeast Asia, it became a part of the culture in each country until Thailand claimed it as their own festival name.
Finally, the word Songkran brings happiness and a sense of fresh starts. The term "Songkran" is written in a Khmer inscription from the Khmer Empire (9th-15th century).
This celebration signifies the conclusion of the harvest season and the start of a new year. It involves customary games, religious rituals, and paying respect to ancestors.
The term "Songkran" originated in Cambodia and has since expanded to other areas of Southeast Asia. Each region has contributed its own unique elements to the festival while still maintaining the central concept of renewal and purification.
The Thai community warmly welcomed "Songkran" as a Khmer word and included lively street water battles as part of the festival's traditions.
Congrats on the word "Songkran" being recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
