      Persia is a great historical power, but do not forget that technology and society are the keys to progress. Truly shows the culture of the Spartans, 300 stayed even though all 300 knew death was coming. "Come back with your shield or on it" is a famous Spartan quote that sums it up, win or die. • @ItsBodin
      @ItsBodin 4 роки тому +99

      @Barry Allen Technically speaking yes they did lose but the battle wasn't meant to be the decisive fight of that war it was meant as a delaying action which it succeeded, it was also one where Leonidas chose to become a martyr along with his 300 spartan warriors. So yes a defeat but it helped change the course of the war before the war really had gotten started. It gave the Greeks a figure of bravery, something highly valued in their time, to stand behind and no doubt influenced the Greeks to fight even down to the last man if it so called for it.
      So your right in saying it wasnt a victory it but your also wrong in saying it too!

    The 300 Spartans fought with the aid of 2,000 Thespians. A minor detail, I know, but still significant and does not at all detract from the sheer bravery and tactical cunning of the Spartans who lead the battle, nor their allies that fought with them to the end.
    By the choice of excellent defensive ground upon which to fight, the Persians unfamiliarity with the terrain, the tactical cunning of Spartan Training, and the charisma of the Spartan King, the 300 will live on in Human Memory Forever.
    Had not a traitor sold the Persians the route to outflank the Spartans and Thespians, it is estimated by most Historians that they could have held until relieved, even had such relief not happened for several weeks.
    The Persian Army was comprised of the armies of their defeated foes. Each with a different tactic they specialized in, and differing armor and weaponry. Combined, the Persians were virtually unstoppable. But the Spartans had tactical counters for each tactic used against them, and their actual 'front' was compressed to a point where only a single unit could face them at any one time.
    Thus the Spartans were able to reduce the threat they faced to something their own size, where they excelled in their training and combat prowess.
    Leonidas, the 300 Spartans, and their 2,000 Thespian allies are worthy of their eternal legend and example of courage, honor, duty, and sacrifice for their Land and People.

      So far as I know, the Thespians died along with the Spartans. They were not two groups fighting in the same area, the Thespians were a part of the overall force of Spartans and Thespians. The Spartans being trained from birth to be Warriors, lead, but the Thespians followed their directions all though the battles. In any case, it does NOT detract from the glory of their combined deeds. 2300 vs 10's of thousands? Still the stuff of Legends.

      Not quite true, the real Spartan Hippies ( Ιππείς = the one who uses horses) and the royal guard had at least their helots to carry their panoply and their weapons, and in battle they did use their armor. The only ones with only a tunic were the helots who followed the wealthy spartan warriors in battle, and they were slaves basically. So really Spartans weren't badmen to go in battle unprepared and they did use armor like any other Greek.

      Technically they could, but since it was the Carneia, it was rather seen as bad luck to wage war during that time. Leonidas figured that if he was going to displease the Gods, then it should just fall on him and the 300 hand-picked volunteers to hold the Persians off until the Carneia ended. By the time his group was wiped out, Sparta pretty much had enough Just Case to stand and fight. The movie despite it being a fictionalized version of the events mentions it "...Relax old friend! if they assassinate me, all of Sparta goes to war. Pray, they are that stupid."

    BUT for those who would like to check that battle out, the Spartans could have won if they had done a few things differently. Not just 300 Spartans but there was almost 7000 or so others (including 1000 Hoplites). The pass was so narrow a lot of "war" historians will say they could have lasted for weeks if not months just defending it. Still does not stop the song being so great.
