Dirted Undergravel Filter Debut @BlackHoleSkimmers

- This is my new 20 long undergravel dirted planted tank, it's still very turbid with the humic compounds from the dirt and such, I only added water 3 days ago.
this is my attempt at a stream style tank, with relatively high flow and a @BlackHoleSkimmers surface skimmer attacked to the opposite tube of the undergravel filter.
you can buy rolls of coconut coir mat or sheet online and at some garden suppliers, in lots of dimensions. I was lucky a 20 long is 12" so I only had to cut it to length.
use organic soil or soil you know hasn't been treated with pesticides. top with whatever you'd like, I used sand I already had in another tank.
thanks for viewing! have a great day.
Hello Koro Werks...nice to meet you...thanks for sharing...Dirted Undergravel Filter Debut @BlackHoleSkimmers
What a great idea filling through the uptake tube 👍
I look forward to the updates on the tank. Great to see things that I have not done before.😁

Really cool. Hope to see more
I have a short showing the newer Nano sized skimmer that I have on this tank, it fits far better in the corner. I do need to make an update video though. 🙂 Thanks for the support!
@@KoroWerks looking forward to it!
Sorry for the vertical video and Shaky cam.
I can't recommend the black hole surface skimmers enough, there's a few things I'm doing wrong in this scenario, so this isn't the best demo of it, but honestly they're great products, best surface skimmer for a planted tank I'm aware of.
hello my friend how are you 👋👋👋
I need to try a deep substrate tank really interesting man!🙂👍🏻

Others that I have shared your video with asked, how is this tank doing? I am curious too.
At this point, Nita, I have it not running as an undergravel, not because it didn't work, but because the undergravel tube flange that hooks into the bottom plate eventually broke, and I need to replace it. I had it running like this for over a year without issues, including a move in between, though it never sustained shrimp very well. I'll see if I can go through all the streams and edit down a video at some point, but fair warning... I hate editing videos. I don't do UA-cam so I can do "chores" it's all fun hobby for me, so until I find the joy in editing 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Right now I have a Sicce shark ADV on there, and it is a transitional period with all my fish, starting the pond and everything up. Been playing a lot of musical tanks the last few weeks.
@@KoroWerks My 1st tank in over 25 years is a 20-standard with pea gravel in media bags laid flat over the UGF plates. I already had both tanks set when I saw the coco-coir pads. The 20 is doing great, but the 55 keeps spiking ammonia. The differences between the 2 tanks are thicker substrate and more driftwood in the 55. I have done 2 X 50% water changes and it's still at 0.5 ppm ammonia.
How long have you had it running?
One of the things I like about "Dirted" over standard undergravel is the wide variety of bacteria and mycelium etc in the soil, some of which can survive underwater, some of which dies and becomes food for future bacteria.
Cycling your "first" tank can be a real hassle, but I don't see anything wrong with using bottled bacteria if youre having an ammonia spike. I wouldn't use Prime to "solve", because that just sequesters it and the ammonia comes back later from what I understand, but eventually your bacteria SHOULD take over and you shouldn't have ammonia issues.
Have you tested your tap? Sometimes tap water has ammonia in it too, and that can throw your results all off.
@@KoroWerks I am using spring water and I did test it. I am afraid to use the well water as it eats holes in galvanized steel pipe.
I cycled the 20 with API Quick Start and
DrTim’s Aquatics Ammonium. It went well and took about 3 weeks
I used Seachem Stability and squeezes from the filters of the 20 in. the 55. It's been 4 weeks. It is well planted. There are videos on my channel of both tanks.
Koro what is the mat you put over the UGF??????????? I really need to know because I used bagged medium pea gravel in my setup. PLEASE
Coconut Coir matting, like the liner in a hanging flower basket? you can buy it in a roll online, or depending on the size of your tank, they sell it as a climbing background for terrestrial hermit crabs at Petco/PetSmart.
@@KoroWerks thank you I will find it!
So what's the outcome on this tank. I just posted this question on Aquarium co op then found your video. I basically have same setup, on 2nd tank refill and it's clouding up again. Hopefully I don't have to take this down and start over with Fluval.
Hi Keith, sorry I missed your comment, the turbidity has dropped a ton, it faded within the first 48 hours or so.
You mostly just need to let the dust settle out of suspension, adding clarifiers can help speed it up if you have enough mechanical filtration but usually waiting a day or so the cloudiness drops.
Sometimes people will get a white clouding to the water that is a bacterial bloom, and those Also usually fade within a day or so, but higher oxygen and flow can sometimes help with those.
Is there a benefit to a dirted tank? They seem to be a lot of work.
Compared to what? Inert gravel/sand? The soil has nutrients. Fertilized aquasoil? The soil has live bacteria and other MicroFauna in it already.
Is it arguably more work, have more potential for an ugly phase with some hair algae and turbidity than sand, gravel, or aquasoil? Sure. Is it cheaper than aqua soil? Yes.
It's not the best option for most people, but it's affordable, it's not actually that much work(though I overcomplicate things. My setup is not the simplest option, it's just what I like)
Look around, see how different people set up different tanks, and maybe try less soil than I use? I think if you use more sand and less soil you are less likely to have an algae bloom/ugly phase during the cycling process.
@@KoroWerks I have seen a few beautiful planted tanks and thought one day, then i was like i would kill everything in the tank lets stick to cichlids and sand :p
@MyView-ji7os if you're careful about your stocking they're pretty low maintenance, but i totally hear ya, dirt and plants in fish tanks kinda goes against what I was taught back in the day too.
