  • What happens when one Irishman takes on the Inca Trail - as a porter?!
In 2016, Jarlath McHale took on Peru’s most famous trek, the Inca Trail. In 2017, he went back to complete the same four day route - but this time as one of the porters who so inspired him first time round.
Filmed and edited by Olly Pemberton

Beautiful done, being there 5 times and once with the trail. After first day all tents and food ready when we arrived and ...the porters were playing football for fun !! Proud to be peruvian !!

Stunning! Never should a tourist take any porters for granted. I think I would feel really quite guilty given how hard they work.

Absolutely great film. Totally agree that these wonderful guys make the trek possible for those like me who can walk but not carry tents, food et al. Super trek and gorgeous country.

Amazing video. Thank you so much for peeking into the life of a porter. Gives me insight to what is to come and what is behind the scenes. I will make sure to be super appreciative for all they do coming up in March 2018.

I have just returned from my high altitude inca trek and totally agree that the porters not only carried all of our necessary equipment, they made us delicious meals and kept our spirits up. What a great film X

Could not have completed this trip with the amazing support of those carrying our stuff. Well done for having a go.
Btw at 7mins 38 seconds what were you eating. I ate those on the trail and not found them since. So tasty.

His experience in no way reflects the reality of the experiences or conditions that the vast majority of porters contend with on the Inca Trail. Despite what are probably good intentions, this project hurts more than helps the porters because it clouds the real misery that porters deal with every day. For instance, most are not provided legit camping gear (shoes, sleeping pads, tents). This video does not show the actual conditions in which porters sleep, which typically is the dining tent. The dining tent does not have a floor, so floods during the rainy season, nor does it protect from the cold during the dry season. Many claim sleeping spot inside working and non-working bathrooms at the different campsites which still get wet, and are, not to mention filthy. Additionally, porters are forced to manually clean the portable toilets that they carry for the trekkers, but they themselves are not even allowed to use. This video romanticizes what in reality is backbreaking, inequitable, and inhumane practices on the Inca Trail.

I am set to hike the Inca Trail next year and I did tons of research to make sure I chose the right company who treated the porters well and with respect as I have heard this as well and I REFUSE to use any tour company who is exploiting the porters and the hard work they do
