It is a French song. The French singer Edith Piaf (1935-1963) made it her "trademark". She was known as "The Little Sparrow" and is celebrated as one of France's best performers. You should give her version a listen... It's incredible!

Louis Armstrong is, simply put, the most important and by far, most influential American musician who has ever lived. His records from the 1920s ("West End Blues" is one example) defined how we think about music to this very day. Thank "Little Louis" as he was known growing up in a neighborhood of New Orleans that was so violent it was literally called "the battlefield" by the locals at the time - it was actually the dying embers of "Storyville" by the time 10-11 year old Little Louis was arrested and sent to a home for, I kid you not, "colored waifs". Luckily Louis had begun learning to play the cornet, and the "Home for Coloured Waifs" had a band. Louis blossomed in that environment and within months his talent was obvious. His playing attracted the attention of two towering band leaders of 1920s-1930s New Orleans, Kid Ory and Joe "King" Oliver. By the time Armstrong recorded "West End Blues" in 1928, he was already the best trumpet/cornetist on the planet. What he did still lays the groundwork for how we listen to music today.
My son listens to all sorts of things, but was playing me a song by the band Testament. I explained to him how even "thrash metal" follows the blueprint laid down by Louis Armstrong. He has such an impact on music that it resonates through history like none other.

The song was originally in French and the literal translation of La Vie En Rose is "Life in pink" A more accurate depiction of what is expressed however, is seeing life through rose colored glasses. This is the signature song of popular French singer Édith Piaf, written in 1945, popularized in 1946, and released as a single in 1947.

Louis was THE GREATEST! THE SWEETEST! He lived for decades in a modest house in Queens, New York with his wife, used to serenade the neighborhood kids on his front steps. You can visit the house, it is a museum now, kept just the way it was when he was alive. I remember my mother cried buckets when he died when I was a kid.

Accordion music is played in numerous styles throughout Europe and North America. Louis Armstrong was born and raised in Louisiana. Creole French music was a part of his musical background, in addition to Jazz and Blues music. Because of this, it is no surprise that this song was an important part of his musical repertoire, especially overseas on tour. There is a subgenre of Creole French music called Zydeco, which features accordion music as an important part of its sound.

1962 Louis Armstrong on the Mark Twain at Disneyland
Here is a segment from "Disneyland After Dark" that aired on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on April 15th 1962. The legendary Louis Armstrong performs on the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland. He joins his old buddies Hot Five Kid Ory and Johnny St. Cyr. Other musicians are Mike DeLay, trumpet, Paul 'Polo' Barnes, clarinet, Harvey Brooks, piano and Alton Redd, drums. "Lazy River" and "Muskrat Ramble" are performed and Monette Moore joins Louis for a rousing edition of "Bourbon Street Parade."

Louis Armstrong started recording in 1923. Had a big 1967-68 with "What a Wonerful World"

Louie with "Wonderful World", is one of the first tracks Iever heard as a small child. I remember that with absolute fondness :) But then, a little later in life, I discovered the Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald 1957 recordings......I was just blown away!!! In my mind, they are the absolute pinnacle of musical talent. Together and solo :)

Louis Armstrong was, is and will always be a National Treasure. This song is perfect in every way, but especially when Satchmo sings. Great song to react to. One of my early exposures to Mr. Armstrong was on PBS - Public TV in a movie called High Society with Bing Crosby...a remake of the Philadelphia Story of the 1930s. An Edith Piaf original. Give a listen to her version and to her other signature song "Non, je ne regrette rien" my all time favorite.

You all checking the great Mr. Armstrong always catches my attention. Amber as a woman I can understand your love for his voice. He certainly gets a lot of women's attention. Men for that matter too. Many men I'm sure that wish they could sing like Louie.

I be to differ "IT DON'T MEAN A THING" was written by Duke Ellington, yes Ella Fitzgerald made it a hit. Now "A TISKET-A-TASKET" co- wrote this one with Van Alexander a song she did with the ChickWebb Orchestra. Again big hit for her this song was featured in the Abbott and Costello's movie "Ride Em' Cowboy"1942.

I Saw a documentary About Louis lífe, and what a life he lived. Growing up in a very poor family, ending up as a young criminal but saved by a family who discovered his musical talent. And being a black musician in the 30’s was not easy. He invented the jazz style he became so famous for. Amazing life story.

Sounded like it was recorded live...in a room...with Louis in front of a microphone...with his trumpet... A piano over there and a band on the other side. Whichever take this was it was a single run through the song from beginning to end. No auto tune or digital effects of any kind. Just musicians making music.
