It is a French song. The French singer Edith Piaf (1935-1963) made it her "trademark". She was known as "The Little Sparrow" and is celebrated as one of France's best performers. You should give her version a listen... It's incredible!
As long as it's the original lyrics as well.
Lady Gaga does an incredible version in A Star Is Born! But the original is still the best.
1915-1963
I did not know that! I thought Louie Armstrong sang it only! Good thing I watched this video! Learned something new reading the comments! Cool! ☺👍
Additionally, travel to Paris through the opening moments in the the movie, Midnight In Paris. Woody Allen captures something truly magical and beautiful.
I love all your reactions but Louie has a especial place in my heart. I highly recommend reacting to Dream A Little Dream of Me, with Ella Fitzgerald and Louie. They made gorgeous music together.
The best! 💜
Ella Fitzgerald is known to have perfect tone… perfect! Do yourselves a favor and listen to her and take the time to realize the mellow voice. She did many songs with Louie.
Yesss please!
YES, YES YES! Pops & Ella!
Beautiful song, also a fun 80s movie with the 2 Corey's for the movie reaction channel.
Louis Armstrong is, simply put, the most important and by far, most influential American musician who has ever lived. His records from the 1920s ("West End Blues" is one example) defined how we think about music to this very day. Thank "Little Louis" as he was known growing up in a neighborhood of New Orleans that was so violent it was literally called "the battlefield" by the locals at the time - it was actually the dying embers of "Storyville" by the time 10-11 year old Little Louis was arrested and sent to a home for, I kid you not, "colored waifs". Luckily Louis had begun learning to play the cornet, and the "Home for Coloured Waifs" had a band. Louis blossomed in that environment and within months his talent was obvious. His playing attracted the attention of two towering band leaders of 1920s-1930s New Orleans, Kid Ory and Joe "King" Oliver. By the time Armstrong recorded "West End Blues" in 1928, he was already the best trumpet/cornetist on the planet. What he did still lays the groundwork for how we listen to music today.
My son listens to all sorts of things, but was playing me a song by the band Testament. I explained to him how even "thrash metal" follows the blueprint laid down by Louis Armstrong. He has such an impact on music that it resonates through history like none other.
Wow Well said.
The Hot Five and Hot Seven bands were amazing. The dude basically invented jazz.
Its great to see people enjoy these old tunes. Most people are missing out and they dont even know it.
I am 64 years old, I have never heard anyone speak negatively about this amazing artist! Playing with the angels in heaven
"A Kiss to Build a Dream On" is one of my favourite Louis Armstrong songs.
The song was originally in French and the literal translation of La Vie En Rose is "Life in pink" A more accurate depiction of what is expressed however, is seeing life through rose colored glasses. This is the signature song of popular French singer Édith Piaf, written in 1945, popularized in 1946, and released as a single in 1947.
Louie Armstrong is MASTER CLASS !!
J & Amber, you'll love his "Ain't Misbehavin' " and "Jeepers Creepers" !!! (singing starts about 2+ minutes in on Jeepers, so you get to hear a lot of trumpet!!)
Isn't he just marvelous? He has a nice cameo in the musical Hello, Dolly! which stars Barbra Streisand - so maybe one night when you feel like mixing movies and music... Don't know if you're into musicals at all, but it's one of the best; it's also Barbra Streisand so how could you go wrong? lol
To get a further taste of Louis Armstrong's terrific personality which also comes through his music, watch him speaking with Johnny Cash in 1970: ua-cam.com/video/v6F7pIF4zOU/v-deo.html
Another great one would be High Society too and Frank and Bing in it
He was all over TV in the 1960s and performed IN several movies! He made Jazz acceptable and dominant to white populations.
Don't have that one..darnnit...Great suggestion.
In the movies you often hear this song playing when a scene is set in Paris.
Louis is a godsend. His music is timeless.
Some of the modern trumpeter worth listening to are Herb Albert (Rise is a must!) And Chris Botti. Very soulful.
I thought Herb Albert played the flugelhorn...
@@wadsworthaaron . I believe you're thinking of Chuck Maginone.
Edith Piaf (French) version always gets to me. I suggest La Vie En Rose, 2007 Musical Drama on her life, as a introduction to this amazing artist. You don't have to understand French to have her melt your heart. Female Friday would be a good time to hear Edith's version of the song..
I agree! Please listen to her original version and put the 2007 movie of the same name (with Marion Cotillard) on the list.
I prefer Edith's version but I love Satchmo's trumpet playing.
You want beautiful instrumental, "A Sentimental Journey" by THE Duke Ellington
For the original version of "La Vie En Rose" check out Edith Piaf. Just like many of our greatest artists, wonderful talent, tragic story
Louis was THE GREATEST! THE SWEETEST! He lived for decades in a modest house in Queens, New York with his wife, used to serenade the neighborhood kids on his front steps. You can visit the house, it is a museum now, kept just the way it was when he was alive. I remember my mother cried buckets when he died when I was a kid.
Louis transcends all genres. Everyone loves him!!!
Just a quick note, there is a movie called “a song is born” starring Louis and Danny Kaye and Benny Goodman! A lot of old music and musicians. Will warm your hearts 🥰
Danny Kaye was one of my favorites as a kid. I loved that movie and Hans Christian Anderson, Five Pennies. he was a very special performer and worked quite a lot with Louis.
‘A Song Is Born’ is currently available for free on Prime Video.
Excellent movie, great choice.
YES!, I remember that movie. Recommend it and St Luis blues with Earth Kitt .
Every time I hear this song I think of a Paris nighclub in the evening with a fabulous
singer performing on stage.
FRENCH SONG : The lyrics of "La Vie en rose" were written by Édith Piaf for music composed by Louie Guy & Robert Chauvigny who completed the music
Original version by Edith Piaf of course. It has to be one of the most covered songs ever. I love the disco version by Grace Jones.
This song was by Edith Piaf, I recommend that you listen to "Non, je ne regrette rien" (I don't regret it) the last song she recorded, in which she gives a review of her life, her joys and her sorrows. Saludos
It’s so wonderful seeing people go on a music appreciation journey.
There are so many movie gems, too, that you could watch on your movie channel. Movies from 1940-50s, with Louis Armstrong, too.
“We have all the time in the world” is another Louis Armstrong song you should listen to. It’s the love song for the movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.
You should check out Louie Armstrong's song "A Kiss to Build a Dream On"; it's really the best song for his unique voice.
Enchanting Storyteller. A Man with two souls. One inside him, the other in the trumpet.
A masterpiece! Louis Armstrong is an amazing singer and trumpet player, as well as just being a class act! Today's performers could learn a lot from him.
His trumpet was his mouthpiece. He didn't have to sing, but when he did it was magic.
Man, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much watching this-- so much JOY!!! 🥰
My wife says I’m reactin to you two reactin. I feel you and I get so happy watching you’re reactions and reads on the music sentiment feeling and vibe. Thanks for being the family unit you’ve become. You give this ole guy hope
Ditto!
That gave me a great chuckle! I know exactly how you feel! 😄
What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong is just beautiful ❤️
Yes! Please y’all react to its a wonderful world if you haven’t already!
They have a reaction to this one. 💜
Always loved "Satchmo". Amber, if you love this style, you need to react to more 'Big Band' genre. Harry James and Clyde McCoy both played the horn. (love McCoy"s "Sugar Blues")
This isn't a rabbit hole, this is the Carlsbad Cavern. Count Bassie, Artie Shaw, Glen Miller and so many more. And all the big bands had great horn sections.
THIS! I'm a late 70's/early 80's kid but I love listening to Big Band. Kay Kyser, Les Brown, and the singers are incredible!
Or, they could combine the Big Band sound with one of their favorite singers, Linda Ronstadt. Anything from her trio of albums she recorded with Nelson Riddle would be fantastic!
Clyde McCoy, yes
I think you would like Henry Mancini... "Moon River" "Days of Wine and Roses" he also did "The Pink Panther Theme" and "Peter Gunn Theme".
Anything from Louis Armstrong It's just the ultimate joyful experience!
My son got married last weekend and this was their wedding song! So beautiful.
So good, I love anything from Louie!
Love Hello Dolly with Barbara Streisand, & What a Wonderful World, Gone Fishin with Bing Crosby but everything he sang or played was great! Such a great version of this song! 🎺👨🏾🦲🎙🙏😍🥺💚
Love Louie Armstrong! You should check out his story. I've read several articles and every time I picture this little boy, working hard to provide for his family, receiving his first horn and how proud he was! He deserved all the good that came to him! 100%!
When You're Smiling
What a Wonderful World
Summertime
Hello Dolly
Now You Have Jazz
One of the greatest trumpet players ever.
Amazing what he could make a trumpet do. 🎺🎺🎺🎺 And as for his voice....amazing. One of a kind and a SMILE to warm the world.
Lucky enough to have parents who shared his gift with us. Loved your reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️🇨🇦 🇨🇦
What a Wonderful World
@@treetopjones737 Thanks. 👍✌️🇨🇦
Louie Armstrong, a true legend.
Jay, when you listen to Armstrong's trumpet it makes me wonder why you don't do a bit more jazz?
You have to listen to "Tutu" by Miles Davis. You won't be disappointed...trust me!
I appreciate how much the two of you have grown musically!
Thank you two. Emotion, can you feel it. He brings it out. Like David Gilmore and his guitar. Never even needs to say a word. And right now I have a loss of. Words. He is featured on a sound track from one of my top movies of all time. "Sleepless in Seattle". A must see on anyone's bucket list. Staring Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan. A very feel good movie.
Love Louie!! My daughter and her husband danced to this song at their wedding🥰
I love the Louis cover. The song is very romantic and even the translated lyrics reflect their French heritage. And Jay, lots of French music utilizes the acordian.
Love Louie, I was just in New Orleans last week, and walked through Louie Armstrong park, had dinner twice at the "Coronet" which was founded by the family that gave young Louie his first coronet, and where Louie used to love to order the Red beans and Rice.
But I'll say it again... Amber really needs to hear: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get
I've always loved this song. This version, in particular. Fun fact, this version of the song has been in a LOT of movie soundtracks. Some you may have already seen and not even recognized the song (like Wall-E).
My husband can sing just like him. And he also in high school played the trumpet.
Love Louis no matter what he does. Come December, you need to church out "Zat you Santa Clause?".
Keeping with this period, I believe you two would also enjoy Sarah Vaughn singing a song called "Dreamy." You will appreciate the horns at the beginning of the song.
Louie's character comes out through the trumpet, then he sings
Unique
Genius
Beautiful
I cried and I'm proud
I grew up in the 90s Asia, and my old man played Armstrong, Sinatra, Presley, Holly, Fitzgerald, Fogleberg, Beatles and Carpenters, all day. Basically, songs that my 90s friends almost always never heard from their FM radio.
He is great for sure, glad you keep reacting to him. For your movie channel I would react to " Mr Hollands Opus" its a very touching movie about a high school band teacher. I had a great band teacher and played the coronet and later tuba. I appreciate Louis Armstrong so much more because of the years I was in the band with a great teacher. And you will recognize the band teacher very quickly!!
It's a very famous song sung originally in French by Edith Piaf. The lyrics are translated for English versions.
Can't wait until you get into Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Cab Calloway. Big band era. What fantastic music.
Louis Armstrong, ahhh my first concert, I was 5 and we met him backstage after the show. Last night went to Tedeschi Trucks Band concert and the horn section was on 🔥. Amazing trumpet, sax and trombone solo's weaved in throughout a night of the best guitar playing from both Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. VOCALS, WOW unbelievable live show.
Louis Armstrong was one of the best. I'd recommend We Have All The Time In The World.
Miles DAvis - “It Never Entered My Mind” Just gorgeous!
To me, Louis Armstrong’s music personifies the word “delight”. His songs are so beautiful and delightful.
Louis Armstrong & Herb Alpert inspired me to learn how to play my first instrument when I was around 12 or 13... trumpet 🎺 Love listening to those swing music bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with a great horn section.
Very cool. I have some Louis and Herb records on vinyl and a CD - An Anthology Of Big Band Swing (1930-1955). Always great to hear that music.
Being a trumpet player and very good old school…beyond my years….Sachmo has a special place in my heart!
Louis is the birth of modern western music. Totally unique and original.
Ya’ll meltin’ over there too, I just know it. This song makes my belly smile. It brings a glow from all over. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Louis was one of ny father's favourites. When I was learning French at school many years ago, I had to learn this song.
It's fun listening to horn players sing like they play. Listen to his vibrato and phrasing.
Louie Armstrong was wonderful. Love this song! Check out Edith Piaf. It was her signature song.
Accordion music is played in numerous styles throughout Europe and North America. Louis Armstrong was born and raised in Louisiana. Creole French music was a part of his musical background, in addition to Jazz and Blues music. Because of this, it is no surprise that this song was an important part of his musical repertoire, especially overseas on tour. There is a subgenre of Creole French music called Zydeco, which features accordion music as an important part of its sound.
Lots of people covered this song in the early 50s. The original, by Piaf, was the best, though. Don't get me wrong, tho. I love me some Satchmo.
His 1928 recording of 'West End Blues' from his Hot 5s and Hot 7s days is an instrumental masterpiece. His opening solo is amazing.
While Louis Armstrong is great, you have to listen to the original Edith Piaf version (sang in her native language, French). She is France’s National Chanteuse, and this is her signature song.
Oui ‼️ La Mōme Piaf (little sparrow) is still revered in France. Not only because of her singing but she allegedly helped the French resistance during the Nazi occupation. As the saying goes: " "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." (sometimes called "the Liberty Valance Effect")
@@JimiBurleigh Love her... I stood on my friend's balcony in Paris listening to her sing. It was an "out of body" experience. 🥰
1962 Louis Armstrong on the Mark Twain at Disneyland
Here is a segment from "Disneyland After Dark" that aired on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on April 15th 1962. The legendary Louis Armstrong performs on the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland. He joins his old buddies Hot Five Kid Ory and Johnny St. Cyr. Other musicians are Mike DeLay, trumpet, Paul 'Polo' Barnes, clarinet, Harvey Brooks, piano and Alton Redd, drums. "Lazy River" and "Muskrat Ramble" are performed and Monette Moore joins Louis for a rousing edition of "Bourbon Street Parade."
Louis Armstrong started recording in 1923. Had a big 1967-68 with "What a Wonerful World"
Louie with "Wonderful World", is one of the first tracks Iever heard as a small child. I remember that with absolute fondness :) But then, a little later in life, I discovered the Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald 1957 recordings......I was just blown away!!! In my mind, they are the absolute pinnacle of musical talent. Together and solo :)
Louis Armstrong was, is and will always be a National Treasure. This song is perfect in every way, but especially when Satchmo sings. Great song to react to. One of my early exposures to Mr. Armstrong was on PBS - Public TV in a movie called High Society with Bing Crosby...a remake of the Philadelphia Story of the 1930s. An Edith Piaf original. Give a listen to her version and to her other signature song "Non, je ne regrette rien" my all time favorite.
You all checking the great Mr. Armstrong always catches my attention. Amber as a woman I can understand your love for his voice. He certainly gets a lot of women's attention. Men for that matter too. Many men I'm sure that wish they could sing like Louie.
Now imagine listening to this in the evening in the garden with a nice single malt scotch whiskey and a cigar.
Nice description by Amber of the feelings that the sound of Armstrong´s trumpet brings! And as Jay says, Louis doesn´t need to sing to tell his story, but when he does...
It’s the way he hangs very slightly behind the beat.... masterful!!!
The rock genre and country has had a great many one of a kind artists, but so did the big band era... You need to check them out... You'll be amazed!!
Having grown up in and around New Orleans Louis holds a very special place for me. Actually got to know people who worked with or were related to him. Can't go wrong with Louis.
One of my favourite love songs
Imagine sitting in an outdoor cafe in Paris and this song playing in the background... Ahhh... Nothing better!
Can't go wrong with Louis! Classic song. That's right, Louis is good for you! Ah, those angels! Scratchy record playing over an AM radio in the family living room.. Great reaction, Guys.

2:53 "There's too much information in this world, and everyone misses a little bit of it. That's why you have to [experience new things]"
Bill Burr
I love his voice, trumpet, and his movies he appeared in great man
wow.. I just love how eclectic your choices are to react to. This is an very old Edith Piaff song, and her version is stunning. I hope you give that a listen, too. PS love the sentiments on your tee shirt, Amber......
I think you would both love his version (where Louis is doing the singing) of Pennies from Heaven! Then you could watch the movie Corinna, Corinna!❤👍😊
The Great Satchmo (Louis Daniel Armstrong) was a singular vocalist and trumpeter. His music, including his voice, brought and continues to bring such joy, it makes you fight back tears. Please react to All the Time in the World.
Louie is definitely top notch! Please react to A Tisket A Tasket and It Don't Mean A Thing both by Ella Fitzgerald.
OH YEAH!!! they will ❤️ it!!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
@@teresajarrell452 Yes indeed! 😁🎼🎶🎵🎶
Yes...we need some Ella and other classic ladies of song from that era for Female Fridays!
@@octoberguy Yes Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday too!
I be to differ "IT DON'T MEAN A THING" was written by Duke Ellington, yes Ella Fitzgerald made it a hit. Now "A TISKET-A-TASKET" co- wrote this one with Van Alexander a song she did with the ChickWebb Orchestra. Again big hit for her this song was featured in the Abbott and Costello's movie "Ride Em' Cowboy"1942.
You guys are absolutely precious and precocious. I so admire your willingness to listen to all genre of music and to show respect for your subscribers by not making your reactions all about declarations which focus on minutia.
I Saw a documentary About Louis lífe, and what a life he lived. Growing up in a very poor family, ending up as a young criminal but saved by a family who discovered his musical talent. And being a black musician in the 30’s was not easy. He invented the jazz style he became so famous for. Amazing life story.
As a 63 yr old! I grew up with movies with Louis Armstrong in a lot of them! And I always loved seeing him singing and playing!
One of my all-time favourite recordings of Louis - and of this song.
An honourable mention should go to Grace Jones.
My wife and I danced to this song at our wedding. Such a classic.
i'm 61 and LOVING seeing the younger generations doing these reactions and getting an understanding of the wide world of diversity in music thruout the decades.
Bravo!!!
You can hear his passion even in the horns , they tell a story all by themselves 😃
Thanks so much you guys, this a beautiful, beautiful song from France it is very old and the lyrics very beautiful again thanks, this is perfect with a🥃😎🎙✌️southside OG
Louis is one of my all
time favorite human beings....he's a magical genius
Melody Melody Melody....Thats what it's all about. Today's music is missing Melody....
Also check out “Smile” (though your heart is breaking)…Armstrong sings it beautifully
We were blessed to have Louis on the earth for a little while. So glad he left those recordings. It does remind me of my parents dancing in the living room in front of the stereo. That was a different time. We need music like that so that our kids can watch us dancing and being in love.
Sounded like it was recorded live...in a room...with Louis in front of a microphone...with his trumpet... A piano over there and a band on the other side. Whichever take this was it was a single run through the song from beginning to end. No auto tune or digital effects of any kind. Just musicians making music.
