Thanks for taking the time to upload these videos and also for your work on Korg forums. It's amazing you can recreate sounds just by ear. Much appreciated!
My old piano teacher, who was probably in her 70s back in the 1980s, and had a full size Steinway in her lounge, used to say that some of the best pianos never tune properly in the very top end. Whenever hers was tuned she would always show me how it was out of tune in the top 3 notes. She said it was "character".
Still have mine here in December 2020. I bought it when they first came out. So in 2021, it'll be 10 years old. I keep finding more and more and more possibilities for creativity this far along. I have composed over 25 full songs, with my virtual singers that I created right from the stock library in the unit. It's the best investment I ever made.
@@salmonella4u Just saying they are literally the same you're not really missing out its the same machine! bigger SSD installed as standard - Maximum RAM installed as standard - New serigraphy with red X Faster loading speeds? Thats it lol this dude just wasted his money on the same machine rather than improving on his gear
@@tuneunleashed On the newer version, up till now, the only other difference, is that they don't have the libraries in the same locations. That's all. I should do some minor maintenance with my Kronos though. Maybe put a new key cushion under the keys, J, Y stick because its getting a bit loose and clicky sounding. But other than that, It works as good as it always has. Some people talk about how much the Yamaha seems "built for performance", based upon the buttons and other surface controls. But have no complaints about my Kronos. Also, look at all the artists over the years who are using it and love it.
Thanks for the video! Your microphone picked up so much keyboard noise from your playing it was impossible to hear the sounds you were talking about (e.g., resonance). It would have been nice to have gotten a clean output from the synth only, or have had a mic that would only get your voice. Thanks again.
I read from "burning busch" who programmed the Famous Synths package that was integrated into the K2, that they purposely changed some of the sequences (like you were pointing out on Sweet Dreams) to avoid copyright issues when integrating his package into the new version of the Kronos.
I had the same defect on the Kronos 1 you talk about at 3:00. It is commonly known at Korg. I even recorded 8 of those failing notes as proof. They completely renewed the keys. So talk to your dealer they,ll fix it.
Hi Dave, the problem with the keyboard action you mentioned was a manufacturing error. I had the same issue with my first Kronos and two warranty replacements. Korg eventually replaced the third one with a Kronos X after I insisted on finding a solution for the faulty action. The Kronos X was fine fortunately.
Great demo with really interesting comparisons. Three questions: 1. Do you think is is better to audition these synths with earphones or through speakers?2. Does the string resonance that perhaps shouldn't be there show up on their natty string resonance display? 3. Have you ever compared this new Kronos 2 string resonance piano with the one on the Nord Stage 2? On the Kronos 2 Berlin piano, the top A sounded a little 'flat' perhaps? Good point; it did't sound quite right. The Jump sound is exactly as you said - more front and centre sound on the original Kronos free sound. The K2 one sounded like it was already mised on the record and was a bit too much reverb. That happens on a lot of digital synths. Your piano note(s) on the K2 note with resonance on my crummy speaker sounded like it had quite a bit of resonance at a range of velocities and then the few notes straight afterwards sounded very dry by comparison. Maybe you had the sustain pedal on and then took it off. I would need to try it in the shop! The Tears For Fears number didn't sound as great to me as you said but the next song sounded much better to my jaded ears. Then when I played the video again, second time TFF sounded great! My ears were't quite tiuned in!
Dave Bellamy 1 - Depends on how you're going to use them. Personally, MOST of my usage is through headphones. When I make sounds, I feel like I can get them more accurate with headphones, but this is entirely a personal feel thing. Good monitors sound good, good headphones sound good. The stereo separation with headphones is more drastic, but personally I tend to be focused more on headphones. 2 - The string resonance I'm referencing isn't a function of the sympathetic string resonance, but rather the resonance the piano they sampled made when they initially sampled it. I could tell based on velocities; It would resonate pretty badly while playing a specific velocity layer, but play louder or more quiet and it wasn't a problem. 3 - Nope. I don't have a Nord Stage 2 and don't really have a lot of experience with them. When I've played them, they sounded great but until you do a direct A/B comparison with similar playing and such, it's hard to remember anything other than how it made you feel at the time unless there's something glaringly wrong. The Berlin Grand (Any pianos with an S appended after it's name) uses stretch tuning. I agree though that one of the notes that was sampled sounded a bit flat compared to the rest. I have to admit, the Berlin is starting to grow on me... But then as soon as I hear that resonance, it just rubs me the wrong way and I switch back to the German grand.
hey there! just want to ask if you don't mind. If you were to choose just one keyboard, which one would you go for the Kronos 2 or the Kurzweil PC3K8? please do a review of the PC3K8 and a song cover if you don't mind. Thanks!
The talk about the Sweet Dreams combi's your showing. Can't you just edit the Karma track to use any sounds you choose, and correct the notes that are played wrong and save it as a new combi ? Forgive me, if I am shooting blindly here, I don't have any of the Kronos, so don't know all the details, but according to some of the instructional videos it says Karma tracks is fully user programable down to the nitty gritty details of the midi data and sound control. Just my 2 coins .. I may be wrong :)
I really enjoyed your video. If I become a tenth the keyboardist you are, I'll be happy. Your video is the first A/B comparison I've seen. I've only tried the demo of the Berlin Grand and I don't hear much difference, and the string resonance seems to do nothing. However, in your video, the Berlin Grand sounds much richer and deeper. What's your final verdict? Is the Berlin Grand worth the upgrade for Korg Kronos 1 owners? Thank you.
Kent A. Vander Velden Thanks! That's a good question. The more I use it, the more it grows on me. I like it for the solo piano playing but in a band mix I find it feels punchy with a too-fast decay. That said, it could just be the live settings and amps I've been going through. I still tend to fall back to the Oasys piano sound for live stuff that isn't too nuanced. If you need a raw piano sound, I end up with the Oasys... But I find myself going to the Berlin for the Berlin Dark, turn up the reverb and it feels like I'm playing in a huge hall somewhere. So it depends. It's growing on me after using it for 4-5 months now, though personally I wouldn't spend $150 on the expansion for my older Kronos.
+David Champagne I auditioned a Korg New Kronos recently, and completely agree with you about the center-octave resonances in the Berlin Grand voice. E above middle C was most annoying, with the piece I was playing. The German Grand, though, is clean and sweet - one of the best piano samples I've heard.
Excellent! Been with Korg boatrds since 01W....Karma....Kronos.... love the look of the new kronos but no reason to upgrade really as you point out the goodness of the original. It takes a real musician's ear to sus out the sample issues. I could never have done it. Thanks. BTW, next time turn off autozoom on the camera, I was like whoaah...but good stuff.
Hello Dave! The action sound of the keybed goes into your mic and makes it very difficult to hear the details of the sounds you are explaining. Besides that thank you infinitely for your videos!!
I know this is kind of an old video. But can you tell me if the korg kronos 2 also includes the German Grand that you mentioned is included on Kronos 1st Gen; and does it sound the same as in the original Kronos?
Hi, thanks for that great job. Do you think it’s possible to play sounds of the famous synth pack free like jump or sweet dreams on the kronos 2. They sounds better for me?
Kudos on spotting that out-of-tune top 'A'. You are right to point out how irritating it is, not just from the obvious playing point of view, but more what it represents in terms of a huge error that got through to a professional flagship piano. What does it say about Korg's testing and analysis before they let these things go to market?
Very well done. I input things like an eccentric, and push and shove things around until I surmise that it is truly only something that this strange person could or perhaps would have bothered to get into so deeply. I certainly respect your rather grandiose ability to play and understand the machine and the written music!!!!!!! Bravo! This advise about the minor differences helps me, because I ran out and put the full price down with Korg when they were still talking about how great the first Kronos would be...in a few months... Keep it up!
Hello David, Thanks for all your very useful and good videos about the Kronos. I got one a month ago. And I wondered if you're not bothered by the noise produced by the keyboard keys (as at 2:39). I had many keyboards in my life and I find this one very noisy. What do you think ?
Fred Liviou It's never been a problem. Every keyboard I've owned has made noise. The Kurzweil 2500/2600 was the most noisy, the PC3K8 was better. Yamaha S90 was the most quiet, but I didn't like the action of the keyboard. The Kronos is the best in between in terms of how it plays but the loudness will vary by what you have the board placed on. Just remember all keyboards make noise. Even pianos do but you can't turn down the volume of a piano. It's never been a problem ever for me, and keep in mind that the mic on my phone at the time is most sensitive to the vocal range which is around the same frequency that the noise is so it'll sound louder than it is.
Hi David! Thank you for good video. How about Korg Kronos and Yamaha Montage comparison? Comparison for not sounds only, rather about sound engines and other technical things?
Just having 2 Kronos's to begin with, seems superfluous...but since you are running a sound design business, thought perhaps...that you would have a purpose for having a third.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I could totally USE a third. I just can't justify spending money on a third. Perhaps my back would disagree? I'd love to sell my K73 and upgrade to the K2 88 LS and maybe use that live instead but it's still a cost investment unfortunately. Otherwise... I would very seriously consider it!
Selling your K73 would make perfect sense actually(IMHO)...as upgrading to a lighter, less expensive Kronos with the latest & greatest OS features, seems ideal.I am really impressed with the LS...so much so,I am considering returning my Krome, but I'd prefer to keep it and eventually have 2 Korg keyboards(as I have 2 PC's) and I need the Krome as a midi controller for my main PC.Yeah...no matter how you slice it,buying a Kronos is a major investment and I'm not sure I could float the payments on one,at this point in time.
Hi David, and thanks for your very insightful videos. You mentioned early on that you would clarify which sound pack your were referring to. I think there is a very simple fix for the "Sweet Dreams" sound: Go to the Sweet Dream Program. Select EXI 1, then Step Sequencer tab In the right at the 5th step ( ie number "05" ) change the value to "60" and play a note to hear it. then save the program if applicable.
Having owned the KRONOS2-88 for four plus years now, I've discovered the German grand hidden in the samples, but not listed in any of the programs and I made a new preset based on that. The Berlin grand sounds okay, but has a lack of character, sounding more like my daughter's piano teacher's 1939 Baldwin grand. G#4 sounds like the felts are too dampened. By contrast, the German grand I found and put on my preload has that classic Steinway bell-like clarity and articulate sound. It is by far, my favorite piano of all the instruments I own.
Hey Dave, thanks again for the videos! You and I have emailed regarding my Kronos x upgrade with the EXs18 and so packs. I do want to get some time from you in January on the K x. Be n touch.
Question...does the Kronos 2 has a slightly larger screen then the 1st Kronos?...I used to own the 1st one and I regret to this day selling it duo to financial difficulties, now I’m trying to buy one but waiting for the opportunity for my finances to get better
Dave Champagne thank you buddy, I’m actually gonna apply for a loan next month to get a new Kronos...it has been too long without my previous one and I miss it every day 😂
good comparison but would you turn that dad blame auto focus OFF on the camera once you get started! It is very annoying! It is trying to refocus every 3 to 5 seconds doing a short zoom in and out! Thanks for the comparison though.
I did not know you could add Kronos 2 sounds to Kronos 1. I bought both used so do not have any sounds on disc that may have come with them. Also, a friend bought the Pink Floyd sound set. Neither of us could figure out how to load the sounds on his or my Kronos. I know these posts have been up for a while but if you still check in to this I'd greatly appreciate your help.
Most of the preset and sounds that come with the original disks are stored on the hard drive under Preload and Extra Sounds or Extra Options. I forget what it's called. To load the sounds, it really depends on how they programmed the sounds. If they use samples, there's a loading process for that. If there's just the PCG, there's an additional process for that. (Check out my channel, I talk a bit about loading sounds and using things like PCG Tools which is an important tool) And I check in frequently, have started a company (www.audora.ca) and also give out private lessons for the Kronos so if you ever get completely stuck, I might be able to help!
To fix SWEET DREAMS on the Kronos2 edit the EX1 Step Seq and change the following steps to the following: CHANGE 03 +048 05 +012 06 +060 12 +048 16 +048 Then you have the correct notes and the best sounds!
I just bought a used Kronos 2 - with the wood sides. I think the wood panels look good! Kronos 2 does have NICE "piano like" keys as compared to my Korg Triton Extreme which are fine, but feel more like "synth" plastic keys - but again I have no problem with that. The Kronos 2 sounds are much more realistic than the Triton - which I used to think were very realistic, but WOW the Kronos 2 is really good! Kronos 2 sounds are comparable to some of the high end professional plug-ins. I'm trying to find a LIST of the internal sounds, and of course since I bought this used I don't have the manual. Didn't find it yet on the Korg website. Is there a "LIST" of the internal sounds online? How would I best dive into the menu to find a sound set like "Orchestral Drums" for example?
There is a list here: www.korg.com/download/global/kronos2/KRONOS_VNL_EFGSJ3.pdf Also, When in Program mode, you can do a search in the top right side, just below the tempo indicator on the screen. There's a search function where you can type in the name of something and it'll show all instance of that item in that mode.
Great video mate. I totally agree about the resonance around and above middle . I'm now going back to the Germans Grand as my first choice piano sound. Like you these things start to bug you when playing and spoils your enjoyment, otherwise the Kronos is the best and most payable board currently on the market. Also just wondering why you bought another board ☺
A well done video. Having programmed sounds from scratch from time to time, I know that small changes to the filters and/or envelopes can make subtile differences in the behavior of individual notes/samples. The velocity transfer points between samples can also distort the pitch or harmonics sometimes. That high note on the piano is pathetic. It may be a true sample of the real instrument but is musically worthless. I actually prefer Baldwin acoustic pianos over all others I have heard, because they have a sweeter, longer sustaining high end.
is there a loop station on the Korg Kronos? How do you get the back beats and bass rhythms you play over with synth for example in the Tears for Fears song?
Regarding the keybed difference, when I owned that 73, I didn't gel with the weighted keys action and sold it to you. However, many years later I got an 88 X and the keybed action was much better. I think I read somewhere that this was common (the retrig effect) in the first generation and KORG addressed this in the 2nd generation (X)
Good stuff! I like your demo. One minor thing though... I would have liked to hear the difference between both keyboards of that out of tune 'A' note. As for the Asian guy, he messes up the songs on purpose, I believe, for any possible (but doubtful) copy write issues. He is great with his demos and yes, is quite the player. The Kronos nails the sounds for the songs... wow, that to me is one of my favourite features. Obviously good to know all those types of sounds reside under the hood but so great to already have them programmed; fantastic! I still prefer Yamaha or even Nord for piano sounds but otherwise the Kronos kills.:)
We are still waiting in the UK for the Kronos 2 to be generally available not till July/August as i understand, Was thinking of getting one but after your revue i don't think i will bother, Sounds like the new Berlin Piano is not up to much and some of the upgraded sounds are only marginally improved and whats with the heavy clicking coming from the key bed? Think i will save the £3000 that's the price tag and stick with my Yamaha
Just wanted to ask you, the Van Helen Jump sound it kind of dissapoints me because of that reverb, but can it be edited to sound like the other kronos ? because if it can then it's okay, if not, then we have a problem.
+Venatt1 It can absolutely be edited. The Kronos is all about being able to edit and manipulate sounds in the most flexible way possible. So yes, it can be edited.
+Venatt1 Totally can yup. I don't have the directions at the moment, but you're going to need to look at the step sequencer that's controlling the pitches. But yes, it can be fixed.
David Champagne I currently own a Yamaha Motif XF but I think the Kronos has a clear edge on many things and I am considering selling it to buy the Kronos 3.
All in all Kronos, Kronos X and Kronos 2 works great and mainly it looks like the difference is that that the newer keyboard is adding more new sounds. Fortunately I have understood that is possible set up an actualization 3.0 to Kronos and Kronos X. In terms of design I like Kronos X. Anyways, very nice video. thanks Master
+tommy p Good question Tommy. I use the Kronos 2 more than the Kronos 1, but it's not a functionality issue. It's entirely a location issue: I've been gigging and such, and the Kronos 1 has been in the studio while my Kronos 2 is in my livingroom. I bought a Surface Pro 3 tablet and have been using that with an interface to record audio here and there, so the majority of my playing has been on the Kronos 2. Also, when I do sound editing, I tend to sit in my livingroom and have the TV on in the background while I edit and so most of my 'work' happens there now. It's not because I don't have a need of the Kronos 1 so much as it's a function of where it's located.
Thank you for your response... Synths have such amazing personality.. It really takes a lot of energy to learn it.... Once you do its hard to let it go....
@@AudoraAudio oh, thanks, good to know. I've bought already Kronos 2 and now I wait...its on the way to me,. Then I saw your video and I was scared :D I use to record a lot songs when I am singing and playing at the same time and I don't want to have action noise in my voice track... :)
@@aaddixx2307 I think with any weighted keyboard, a LOT of the noise comes from the stability of the stand to be fair too. I have padding below my stand that I use for the K2-88 and obviously there is still some key noise but it's definitely not as bad as the video makes it out to be. Happy Keyboarding! If you get stuck with anything Kronos related, feel free to reach out.
The keyboard is a personal thing. You dont give that away for free and you can keep an older model for sounds that the new model plays differently. Every Keyboard is different.
Thanks Dave, My Kronos 2 is on order. Can you make a demo on how to use the sampler using a CD player to capture an intro of a song for live playing? Thanks, Nice Job
This retriggering-keyboard problem on Kronos 1 was widely known and it was fixed in Kronos X. Also users of the first Kronos could have they keybeds replaced (it was covered by warranty if I remember correctly). It was a bug. ;-) I don't think you'll ever experience it in Kronos 2.
Yes, sort of. The Kronos has a combination of wave sequencing, several real time step sequencers, some basic arpeggiators as well as a full blown Karma implementation which is far, far more powerful than anything else out there. Also yes, it has a 32 track sequencer; 16 midi tracks and 16 audio tracks. There's not much comparison, to me the Kronos is the obvious choice. They're both very good machines but Kronos has more power generally.
Audora Audio Thanks for your reply,I’m just about the buy the Kronos 2 but what is that you mention about something being heard while playing the piano on the Kronos 2 is it a fault with all the Kronos 2’s produced.
What is that at 9 minutes 50 seconds where you mention about something in the piano on the Kronos 2 does this mean that every Kronos 2 has this Fault,as I was planning on purchasing one next week.
@@paulallenMacca Hi John - yes, it's a fundamental sample issue. I purchased the EX17/18 for my Kronos 1, and the same sample has the same issue. It's that the sample itself (the piano sampled) had a pretty bad resonance/detuning issue. That said, there are LOTS of pianos in the Kronos that are all usable and even live, it's not really noticeable. It admittedly is me being nit-picky, but when you pay $4000+ for a keyboard, something like this shouldn't go unnoticed. It's certainly not a fatal flaw by any stretch, and it's really just one note that I noticed.
Audora Audio thanks I don’t think I will buy the Kronos 2 now have you ever played the Yamaha montage 8 it is my second choice,so is that fault in one particular piano sample only like in the available external samples. So with built in piano samples the fault isn’t present in any of them is that right,I’m told there is a Berlin piano and Steinway piano is this fault present in them.
Now we need to throw the Kronos X in which is even closer to the Kronos 2. I put the fan on silent and a 2 doesnt have much improvements, except that the body is a bit different. Ram is also 3 Gb and 63Gb SSD Storage. The processor is manufactured on the 45nm node in opposition to the one of the Kronos 2 which is 32nm, a point for the Kronos 2 obviously. But the 10watts tdp of the Kronos 2s atom in opposition to the 13 watts of the Xs dont really matter. My X stays at 55°C with fan set to silent, which is more than cool enough. But the Kronos 2 only has 2 cores though and the X 2 cores with hyperthreading. As long as the polyphony is same though, it doesnt really matter. Do i miss a point?
You probably have perfect pitch (ability to identify the actual notes being played), and those tone colors issues you point out on the Berlin Grand would bother me as well. Would be helpful if you described the comparison of the weighted keys to a real grand piano.
Hi can you please help me as ive been trying all day to install World Pianos into my Kronos 2 and im new to this sort of thing i put them in Bank U-G but when i play the Keys i don't get any sound.
Guys, the Original Kronos had a problem with the Keybed, but there is a fix that Korg offers for any Kronos that had that problem. If you take it or send it to a registered dealer they will have it fixed for you free of charge
J. B. Taylor Just want to echo want JB said. I have an early US Kronos, and it had the double hammering problem. Korg replaced the keybed, no charge, outside of warranty. Just contact product_support at korgusa dot com and tell them what's happening.
Interesting comparison. I do agree with your ears on some of the over resonating notes on the Berlin Grand. I also hear them on German Grand with my Kronos X. I think that Korg still has a way to go to compete with Roland on sampled piano technology. The supernatural technology that Roland uses seems far more real than what korg has to offer. But, as a workstation the Kronos rules! Jerold
To my ears the Berlin Grand sounds richer. Maybe because of the imperfections. That's why we love Tape Echoes, right? And it has clearly more mids though. So it might be better in a full band context
Korg Kronos Platinum is a limited platinum colored version of the same Korg Kronos 2, I have one and It's amaizing :) www.korg.com/us/products/synthesizers/kronos2_platinum/
HELP . i would like to by myself a late xmas present and get me a kronos 2 (2015). however im not sure which size i should take. im not a "piano" player at all. usually i would prefer the unweighted "synths" Keyboards. but on the other hand i would love to have the larger 76 or 88 keys wide range. but what bothers me there is the somewhat "noisy" hammer action :( - ARGH!!! What to do ?!?!
+Manuel Giorgi Not really - I didn't record the sound from my Kronos directly so what you're hearing is from the keybed directly. Admittedly it sounds to be in the peak frequency that the phone records at so it sounds louder, but it's not really that loud in person. (Especially now that I've had it for 9 months, I don't notice it at all compared to how loud it sounds in the video.)
On the Kronos 2 keys out of tune and resonance that you hear -- why are you apparently not taking this up with Korg? I would think they would be delighted that you found something 'wrong' and either get you a new board, fix yours AND pay you for your trouble with Free Stuff. FYI: your camera's hunting auto-focus is extremely annoying -- put your camera in manual focus!
+David Champagne You did not understand. You captured audio through a mic, not a direct line out, so, mic captured the keys noises, it´s anot a problem as you play, is a techincal sound capture problem. You don´t need to be rude !
To my opinion, Kronos are wonderful creation tools to compose, they're inspiring new ideas very quickly and it's already excellent. But I wouldn't use them on stage for example, they have a kind of "Bontempi" touch despite of their overall quality but it's probably OK if you're mainly doing pop covers?
You can get the K1's at a VERY reasonable price these days - they might not have the Berlin Grand (EXs 17/18) which come pre-installed but will have very comparable things like Polyphony. The K2 is very slightly more powerful but it's negligible. It depends on how much you want to pay for a newer keyboard, keybed, extra EX's, more memory, more RAM out of the box, and what kind of deal you'd be getting on the K1. That said, I'd absolutely try and find a K1 over a K2 for the price difference and upgrade it myself to a K2 status.
Well, Kronos II is officially launching on April 27th, so not for a while yet. (www.kronos-wow.com/2016/04/24/kronos-ii/) The Kronos 2 I'm mentioning above definitely supports the solo campaign as well as PvP and Coop mode.
What's that low-pitched "clunk, clunk, clunk" sound that is heard immediately after every time you play a note? That is very irritating. I"ve tried to watch this video several times and all I hear is 'clunk, clunk, clunk' Is that the camera's built-in mic picking up the room sound of the keybed? Is so, please re-do this comparison video and use direct signal out of your mixer to camera input.
I have the first one Kronos, still loving it and won't change it for anything else , such a beast and a beauty ^^
Cheers, take care

Great vid - liked the detail around the resonance which I could even here through my iMac's speakers! Interesting points about the free patches too...
I read from "burning busch" who programmed the Famous Synths package that was integrated into the K2, that they purposely changed some of the sequences (like you were pointing out on Sweet Dreams) to avoid copyright issues when integrating his package into the new version of the Kronos.

There're like 9 synths engines in each of the Kronos and what do we hear? Piano sounds, of course! lol
well, this is my que to ditch the video midway through
damn your vids are really useful! youre the only one with new vids about the kronos 2015 :-)
ive ordered mine, arriving middle of march
Hi Dave, the problem with the keyboard action you mentioned was a manufacturing error. I had the same issue with my first Kronos and two warranty replacements. Korg eventually replaced the third one with a Kronos X after I insisted on finding a solution for the faulty action. The Kronos X was fine fortunately.
Best comparison vid I have seen. Thank you! I got my New Kronos and love it.
man this comparison video is rock solid thanks!
Great demo with really interesting comparisons.
Three questions:
Dave Bellamy
1 - Depends on how you're going to use them.
+David Champagne
I auditioned a Korg New Kronos recently, and completely agree with you about the center-octave resonances in the Berlin Grand voice.
Thanks. BTW, next time turn off autozoom on the camera, I was like whoaah...but good stuff.
so right about the A key.. nice job
Hello Dave! The action sound of the keybed goes into your mic and makes it very difficult to hear the details of the sounds you are explaining. Besides that thank you infinitely for your videos!!
I love listening to your playing. great style man
I know this is kind of an old video. But can you tell me if the korg kronos 2 also includes the German Grand that you mentioned is included on Kronos 1st Gen; and does it sound the same as in the original Kronos?
Yup! The Kronos 2 has all of the sounds as the Kronos 1, and they're identical. The sounds are just in different places on the Kronos 2
@@AudoraAudio Got it, Thanks a lot!
Kurzweil K2600 has an out of tune middle c that sticks out badly too.
Keep it up!
Hello David,
Thanks for all your very useful and good videos about the Kronos.
Thank you David.
I usually play that loud I can't hear the keyboard noise. The people who live three streets away think it sounds great.
Hi David! Thank you for good video. How about Korg Kronos and Yamaha Montage comparison? Comparison for not sounds only, rather about sound engines and other technical things?
Are you planning on acquiring the new Kronos LS 88,at some point?A comparison between the older models versus the LS...would be great!
I hadn't actually planned on it to be honest. I already have the two kronos boards, so getting a third would be a little... superfluous maybe?
David Champagne wouldn’t lack of aftertouch on LS bother you?
Skip to 7:30 -- He actually starts playing the piano ... there I saved you 7 and half minutes of your life
Its not just about playing the piano he is explaining the main differences between the two generation keyboards
Thank youuuuu 🤭
Hi David, and thanks for your very insightful videos.
You mentioned early on that you would clarify which sound pack your were referring to.
I think there is a very simple fix for the "Sweet Dreams" sound:
Go to the Sweet Dream Program. Select EXI 1, then Step Sequencer tab
In the right at the 5th step ( ie number "05" ) change the value to "60" and play a note to hear it.
then save the program if applicable.
Love the video, How Can i get the pop song patches on my Kronos x? they sound awesome i would love to have fun with them, thanks
So I am not missing out on anything between the Kronos vs Kronos 2?
Not quite;
The Kronos 1 has a smaller hard drive, comes with 2 GB of ram instead of 4, and is missing the EXs17/18 that ships with the Kronos 2.
Loved the video Dave
Having owned the KRONOS2-88 for four plus years now, I've discovered the German grand hidden in the samples, but not listed in any of the programs and I made a new preset based on that. The Berlin grand sounds okay, but has a lack of character, sounding more like my daughter's piano teacher's 1939 Baldwin grand. G#4 sounds like the felts are too dampened. By contrast, the German grand I found and put on my preload has that classic Steinway bell-like clarity and articulate sound. It is by far, my favorite piano of all the instruments I own.
Are the combis factory for those famous songs? Or are they from a sound pack?
They're factory on the Kronos 2 but can also be downloaded!
Hey Dave, thanks again for the videos! You and I have emailed regarding my Kronos x upgrade with the EXs18 and so packs. I do want to get some time from you in January on the K x. Be n touch.
Just waiting for my K2 cant wait now!
Hi, is the Korg Prophecy synth included in the Korg Kronos synths? Or would it be better to buy a Korg Prophecy to play Prophecy sounds?
The Polysix is, but the Prophecy isn't no.
Thank you very much!
Question...does the Kronos 2 has a slightly larger screen then the 1st Kronos?...I used to own the 1st one and I regret to this day selling it duo to financial difficulties, now I’m trying to buy one but waiting for the opportunity for my finances to get better
The screens are exactly the same size. The Kronos 2 has a small bezel surrounding the screen that the K1 does not, but they're identical otherwise.
Dave Champagne thank you buddy, I’m actually gonna apply for a loan next month to get a new Kronos...it has been too long without my previous one and I miss it every day 😂
This guy waffles on far too much.
Skip to 7:30 -- there I saved you 7 and half minutes of your life
@@laurajohnson4086 I started at the beginning so i wasted over 7 minutes of my life.
good comparison but would you turn that dad blame auto focus OFF on the camera once you get started!
(Check out my channel, I talk a bit about loading sounds and using things like PCG Tools which is an important tool)
And I check in frequently, have started a company (www.audora.ca) and also give out private lessons for the Kronos so if you ever get completely stuck, I might be able to help!
Thank you for the speedy and helpful reply!
To fix SWEET DREAMS on the Kronos2
edit the EX1 Step Seq and change the following steps to the following:
CHANGE
03 +048
05 +012
06 +060
12 +048
16 +048
Then you have the correct notes and the best sounds!
Amazing - thanks for including the exact values!
There is a list here: www.korg.com/download/global/kronos2/KRONOS_VNL_EFGSJ3.pdf
Also, When in Program mode, you can do a search in the top right side, just below the tempo indicator on the screen.
+lyniseuk He bought a 2nd Kronos just to compare it for us :)
Brilliant comparison, thanks.
is there a loop station on the Korg Kronos? How do you get the back beats and bass rhythms you play over with synth for example in the Tears for Fears song?
ohhh thanks, you are the best love the videos keep it up
Regarding the keybed difference, when I owned that 73, I didn't gel with the weighted keys action and sold it to you. However, many years later I got an 88 X and the keybed action was much better. I think I read somewhere that this was common (the retrig effect) in the first generation and KORG addressed this in the 2nd generation (X)
Great video, just my opinion, (and it may be my speakers), the two piano's sound pretty much identical when you were A/B playing at the end.
Thanks for the helpful info !
David Champagne
Also wanted to ask you, can the wrong notes from Sweet Dreams be corrected ?
+Venatt1 Totally can yup. I don't have the directions at the moment, but you're going to need to look at the step sequencer that's controlling the pitches. But yes, it can be fixed.
David Champagne
I currently own a Yamaha Motif XF but I think the Kronos has a clear edge on many things and I am considering selling it to buy the Kronos 3.
How does it compare to the Kurzweil PC3K8 or the Yamaha MOXF-8 in terms of sounds and features?
Dave did u end up using one more then the other... Its been a year?
Hi Dave, is this keyed really that loud? I mean action noise... :(
Nah, it's just my mic that's picking up the sounds. I've had it for years at this point and it's really no louder than any other keyboards I've had
Dave Champagne sure! Thank you :)
Nobody needs 2 Kroni. Please consider donating your old one to someone less fortunate.
Meld Magic Hahahaha haha
The keyboard is a personal thing. You dont give that away for free and you can keep an older model for sounds that the new model plays differently. Every Keyboard is different.
I DO I would love to have the 2nd KRONOS :)
Thanks Dave,
My Kronos 2 is on order. Can you make a demo on how to use the sampler using a CD player to capture an intro of a song for live playing?
Thanks,
Nice Job
This retriggering-keyboard problem on Kronos 1 was widely known and it was fixed in Kronos X. Also users of the first Kronos could have they keybeds replaced (it was covered by warranty if I remember correctly). It was a bug. ;-) I don't think you'll ever experience it in Kronos 2.
Which keyboard stand you are using?
I wonder if Korg is going to continue to bring out popular song setups to play
on the Kronos? That's pretty cool stuff. Hope they do.
Does the Kronos 2 have many Arpeggiators and a 16 Track Sequencer I'm trying to choose between the Kronos 2 and Yamaha Montage 8.
Super demo thanks grts marc
You're the Bomb Dave!
By the way, great video!
Too much lecture against sound and music show...
Hi can you please help me as ive been trying all day to install World Pianos into my Kronos 2 and im new to this sort of thing i put them in Bank U-G but when i play the Keys i don't get any sound.
Dave you forgot something. the Middle C to E are tinny and electronic sounding like HELL. clank clank. ive solved this issue in combi mode however
Guys, the Original Kronos had a problem with the Keybed, but there is a fix that Korg offers for any Kronos that had that problem.
J. B. Taylor Does the Kronos 2 also have that problem or any other keyboard issues.
Would korg bring out a patch to correct sound issues on the Kronos 2? Or is there no way if correcting this? Does korg know about the glitches ?
They could know, but probably don't care. The cost involved for no financial gain isn't something companies tend to do even if it's the right thing.
what's the banging noise everytime he hits a key. My Korg doesn't make a racket like that.
It could have been the stand it was on, the other stand I have with just the 88 key Kronos doesn't sound nearly as loud.
what do u think of motif xf8 i find the sequencer to be easier to use than kronos?
Interesting comparison. I do agree with your ears on some of the over resonating notes on the Berlin Grand. I also hear them on German Grand with my Kronos X. I think that Korg still has a way to go to compete with Roland on sampled piano technology. The supernatural technology that Roland uses seems far more real than what korg has to offer. But, as a workstation the Kronos rules!
Jerold
Love your channel bro keep up the good work ignore the naysayers do your thing
Does korg kronos have touch problem?
To my ears the Berlin Grand sounds richer. Maybe because of the imperfections. That's why we love Tape Echoes, right? And it has clearly more mids though. So it might be better in a full band context
How about the Platinum Kronos 2? Its only a cosmetic difference from Kronos 2?
I haven't looked into it specifically, but my understanding that, besides the color, it's identical to the Kronos 2
Great thanks!
Is that keybed really so noisy? My Nord C2D's one is very noisy but this seems worse.
Thanks Dave 😊
Don't stop believing by Journey is one of your favorite songs you played there Sir! Tears for fears was good too!
AND the G and Ab above middle C is WAY louder in volume and frequency than all the other notes around it
what stand are you using
It takes the person in the video 7:40 before we here anything. He could have taken less time to say the same things.
Noisy keyboard ? looks you play each key with a snare drum playing along....
Dihelson Mendonca You mean that's now how you're supposed to play?
+David Champagne You did not understand. You captured audio through a mic, not a direct line out, so, mic captured the keys noises, it´s anot a problem as you play, is a techincal sound capture problem. You don´t need to be rude !
+Dihelson Mendonca I completely understood. I replied sarcastically, not rudely. Don't be so sensitive.
Which one would you use on stage Eva?
Which 1 is preferable with a 1 k spread in price? Kronos 1 or 2
You can get the K1's at a VERY reasonable price these days - they might not have the Berlin Grand (EXs 17/18) which come pre-installed but will have very comparable things like Polyphony. The K2 is very slightly more powerful but it's negligible. It depends on how much you want to pay for a newer keyboard, keybed, extra EX's, more memory, more RAM out of the box, and what kind of deal you'd be getting on the K1.
That said, I'd absolutely try and find a K1 over a K2 for the price difference and upgrade it myself to a K2 status.
aw snap he hit the van halen 😂 i was looking for a ssd upgrade on the kronos and ran across this .. 💪🏽
This could have large archival value if it didn't have that camera mic audio.. such a pity.
I'm thinking kronos 2, but how's the PvP on it, can i expect to get into AV? i miss nost
Well, Kronos II is officially launching on April 27th, so not for a while yet. (www.kronos-wow.com/2016/04/24/kronos-ii/)
The Kronos 2 I'm mentioning above definitely supports the solo campaign as well as PvP and Coop mode.
What with the very loud key noises?
The Oberheim sound for Van Halen "Jump" needs more reverb on the Kronos 1 but otherwise sounds the same as the Kronos 2
The people also have a Kronos or another synthesizer and play only piano sounds all the time?
WHY?
Tatjanaundklaus Markwald I totally agree. Yes the piano sounds are good, but it's a bit overkill right?
Yep, not only piano sounds but jazz piano style. Im a rock keyboard player and would like to hear other sounds that are on the Kronos.
Korg help you when I get
Can you imagine having to work with this man? Can you say obnoxious?
What's that low-pitched "clunk, clunk, clunk" sound that is heard immediately after every time you play a note? That is very irritating. I"ve tried to watch this video several times and all I hear is 'clunk, clunk, clunk' Is that the camera's built-in mic picking up the room sound of the keybed? Is so, please re-do this comparison video and use direct signal out of your mixer to camera input.
