i think spring is probably the hardest season to pin down vibe-wise for music, but you did such a fantastic job here! 6 hours and everything feels like a natural fit.

This is such a huge list with amazing variety, and they all fit the theme. What is your process like for choosing from so many games?
For a mix with a broad theme such as this and the summer and winter ones, I kind of just start out by choosing the vibe. I knew I wanted Spring for this, but that can have a few different meanings, so I usually will choose a few adjectives to go by- for this one, it was songs that were either cheerful, atmospheric, or relaxing (and of course, fitting for springtime). I then start by writing the songs I know from memory that make me think of the theme (The Stardew ones, Petal Meadows, Spring Emotions, Click Clock Wood, Onett, Hyrule Field etc). Once I’m exhausted my memory a bit is usually when I’ll put the call out for suggestions, either on the UA-cam community tab or in Discord. I always ask in the @GVG Patreon Discord Server and always get great responses in there. They usually end up filling in a lot of my blanks in terms of series that I don’t play or aren’t as familiar with- in the case of this mix, ones like the Final Fantasy, Soul Calibur, Elder Scrolls songs, etc as Nintendo is (usually) the stuff I’m most familiar with, and I’ll usually ask some of my friends for help on the Nintendo franchises I’m not super familiar with (namely Fire Emblem and Xenoblade). If it’s a more specific mix like the Kirby one, I’ll ask in more specific areas too like the WiKirby Discord, for example. While I’m getting responses is when I’ll go beyond my memory and usually just start scanning through game OSTs by series, trying to think of things that could possibly fit, even looking at other similar mixes from some other excellent VGM compilation creators (like Vapid, shadowatnoon, etc) for a couple song ideas, which usually will make me realize “Oh shoot I totally forgot about this game or series!” which then lets me remember a bunch more. I also then look for songs that aren’t necessarily or specifically fitting in the theme but have a similar vibe, whether in mood or instrumentation (Turnabout Sisters, BS-X Sample Song 4, etc). I will typically end with around 100 songs gathered in the spreadsheet (unless I’m going for an especially long mix like the Sonic one, which had over 200 songs) and start plugging them in an order that I feel flows and if the audio track isn’t near an even hour, I’ll usually go back for one more round and add some more (this one was around 5 hours and 40 mins so i added some more). It’s a tough process to narrow and choose and I try to get a good mix of the popular stuff thats in all the mixes, some that you may not hear super often, and some obscure stuff that you never hear (I’m always happy when I can sneak the Satellaview music in there) Thanks for the question and thanks for listening!!
