    Great, advice I am currently applying for a master for the IPLS in Belfast and I have been struggling to put my thoughts into words in this regard. I can't simply say I want to practice tech and IP law . Working in retail over two six-month peroids has allowed me to develop a commercially oriented minset, but I am nervous being a milk-man wouldn't be considered relevent.

    Hi Idin. Really great video. Just a question, should we write about open days/insight days we attended with other firms (and not the one we're applying to) in our 'why commercial law' question? Would that backfire?

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Natasha!
      Thanks for the comment - I'm glad you found it useful.
      I'd say you definitely should!
      At such an early stage in your career, a firm would expect that you'd looked at different law firms. It would, in my opinion, look good to see you've shown an interest in the career as a whole.
      Just make sure you can take those 'general' commercial things you've learnt from other experiences and make them relevant to the 'specific' firm you're applying to.
      Hope that helps!

    Great content thank you. I have an interview coming up and I was wondering how would you structure an answer for "tell us about a recent case that has caught your interest?" or something along those lines.

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  3 роки тому

      Hey Shah! Thanks for the comment.
      For something like that, the way I'd approach it is:
      (1) Outline the case in a sentence or two, to say what is happening (e.g. Company X bought Company Y);
      (2) Why it interested you (e.g. Indicative of a wider trend of similar acquisitions);
      (3) Link to the firm as far as possible (e.g. How could the firm you're interviewing at respond to the wider trend mentioned in point 2?)
      This isn't a framework that fits every news story but generally, if you pick a story that can relate to the firm in some way, it'll give you more opportunity to talk in more depth and show your understanding of the firm which is really good.
      Good link in the interview 🤞

    This is so brilliant. I have scoured the internet for examples because I had no idea how to write this. Do you have any tips for someone who already has had one year of legal training (in another country)? It almost seems like a chicken and egg situation where I've ALREADY trained for a year, but now I'm applying for a training contract in the UK, and I have to act like I haven't started my career yet.

      Hey @Pokadoodledoo!
      Thanks so much for the kind words.
      To be honest, I can't imagine how having past legal work experience isn't going to be helpful for an app now. It's usually a good way to show that you understand what the role is. But maybe I've not fully understood the situation.

    • @IdinSabahipour
      @IdinSabahipour  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Kat!
      I think it depends on if the question is using "corporate law" as a synonym for commercial law or if its actually referring to the "corporate practice area".
      For the first type of scenario, I think it's okay. For the second though, I'd focus more on talking about corporate work or mergers, acquisitions etc. that demonstrate your interest in corporate.
      I know that's a wishy-washy answer, but I hope that helps!
