This song is a definitely a grower for most Madonna fans. Give this song a chance and listen to it for a couple of times, some fans liked it after watching the video too. Madonna is fusing Latin sounds to her latest record because she's highly influenced by it during her stay in Lisbon, although this is nothing new to her (La Isla Bonita, Who's That Girl). She released another song called "I Rise" which sounds more like the other mid-tempo tracks she did in the past, maybe you'll like that. I really think that this era is going to be great, and if you just give these songs some chance to grow on you, maybe you'll see why this could have the potential to be one of Madonna's best eras. Also, she looks so happy in this performance, it's radiating off the screen!

Images are captured in a studio (Madonna filmed in London, if I'm not mistaken), then 3D models are created in a computer engine. The rest is camera tracking. It's one big technical choreography. ;)

Madonna shows us that you don't have to be young to be relevant, and she has so much energy, and is still growing and pushing as an artist, so I love this and the chemistry between her and Maluma. Madonna is 60. She is frekaing amazing and an inspiration to all of us.

I absolutely understand your point of view about this performance in particular because you are a quite trained and correct vocal coach being honest, but please, if I am allowed to, I would like to add something: Madonna is in her 60´s, and she has survived from the 80's era (we have lost George Michael, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, etc., on the way). So far, she has done everything and we can't ask her for more... seems to me that she is having fun, and she has also accomplished her main mission through her whole career: being controversial,} and provoking people.

I found this review to be ignorant, tbh, I think Madonna is trying too hard to summon up a vision of Medellin, but the rhythm is obviously a Colombian cha cha and not a conga, which is from Cuba. That is just pure ignorance and not cute to flaunt your ignorance like that.
If you don't have an appreciation of Latin culture this isn't going to be your thing, and she obviously is a big anglophile.

Totally agree! Fair and honest! Madonna simply hasn’t worked out how to sing live and move, and she gets SO nervous during live performances.
There’s no reason why she couldn’t have sung the first verse and stayed VERY still (my partner and I’ve noticed that she sounds the best she she’s very still - like when she’s sat down, or in the electric chair, or on the cross on tour), and then danced and sang over herself for the rest of it.
But she’s redefining pop performance with augmented reality on live tv - still pushing boundaries!
And I think the age gap thing - I Madonna is ageless if you’re a straight guy. She’s 60, up there dancing with someone in his prime and more than keeping up with him.
But yeah, we’re here for the vocals! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m also a BIG fan. I think the song and the performance are just a bit of fun. Not her finest moment. But come on we do judge her to a higher standard. Which isn’t really fair but I guess cus we love her so much we want her to be iconic every single time. Which is impossible. The very first thing I said when I heard The song was the critics will love it but the public won’t and I was right. Great music reviews poor chart performance. It’s a very well made song but just not on trend at the moment. I know she’s been doing the Latino thing her whole career but just like her collab with Timberland she’s just missed the boat by about 12 months with the Spanish pop explosion. I still love her. I like the song and the performance was ok. I prefer ‘I rise’ feels more original which is what we all love about Madonna! New original sounds! Thank you for your channel! You’re great x

I’m sorry, but Madonna’s performance wasn’t about good vocals this time but about having fun. Madonna is 60 years old and she had been criticized just because her age, people think that she “should act her age” and that’s exactly what she’s showing on this performance. Even YOU said something about her age on this video... and this is what her performance was about... to wake people up and stop worrying about age. She is using technology also to make a point, “you are calling me old but any of the young performances are using new technologies in their performances”, how about that ?, again she’s ahead of her time like she was in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. If you are watching the performance to find out how good or bad the vocals were this is the wrong video. Madonna always put her heart on each project she does, and she sings with her open heart. React to LIVE EARTH performance where she sang 4 songs, danced her ass off and showed how good she is. She’s amazing !

Madonna is an artist in advance on her time. So it's normal people needs time to understand a new musical universe (including myself). On the 1st lessoning of Medellin I did not buy it. But I don't know why I felt necessary to listening every morning and every night and now I am totally addict. The clip is beautiful and this BBMA performance is Extraordinary, to share all my sensations with you, it reminds me deep and peaceful sensations I had ones I made love with my beloved beeing stone.

No, Madonna is NOT an artist in advance of her time. She's a pop star who has made some fantastic pop records and, unfortunately, this song is not up there with them. Honest Vocal Coach is spot on when she says the only thing that will be remembered of this performance is the holograms which, incidentally, could only be seen by the viewers on television, not the audience at the show; for them, the performance must have been very lame.

    @emilioincerto 5 років тому +3

@thehonestvocalcoach Something that should be noted is that all live television augmented reality requires a 3-7 frame delay in the live video signal along with the audio stream that goes out to viewers. It sounds like the in venue audio is getting mixed in with the delayed feed. My guess is the live audience wouldn't have heard this reverb effect, although they couldn't see the holograms either. Remember you need to bake a delay into all the camera feeds, even the ones not showing a hologram, to allow the computer enough time to render the overlay positional graphics.
With a live musical performance this is an extremely complex ballet to choreograph technologically. I doubt it was rehearsed very much with all the production elements before it went live to air since the control room crew for these type of shows usually don't come on until the final day or two.

its dermal fillers that give that bloated look, they are at their worst when they are new, which i think is part of the problem, people go for fillers just before they want to look good for the camera and it just looks like their head is exploding from the inside. people use them a lot for lips and it gives you that nice baboon butt look when they are just done.

You can have a live sound engineer to create all the sound effects live which Madonna has done as well as singing to a pre recorded live track of her vocals too. A guy of his age slapping her butt, has been what Madonna has been doing since day 1, fighting for expression then, and now. You don't have to like it, many won't, because they see what has been instilled in them by society. A younger woman slapping an older male singer's ass, not cringey. Madonna has never been one for vocals, she does sing well live when she is still, but when moving, and when it is not her own concert, without more time to prepare, she uses backing. She wants her performances to be visually a treat as well. It is a nice subtle sexy song that grows on you with each listen. It is expected many people will not like it. I am just glad she still makes music, and still does things to get people talking.

Im just stunned that you actually expected it to be live. I would never have chosen a clip from a show like this to judge a live performance by. While it was possible that she might have sung live to track, the vocal treatments really meant that it was never going to be sung live at a moment like this [just like Cher's Believe] which Madonna would naturally want to be perfect. The choreography and the holograms etc would mean that she would nix a live performance if she felt it at all likely she would not put out her best performance vocally.
I appreciate that you didn't like the song - altho Im not sure if this was your first time hearing it. I love Madonna, but don't unquestioningly love everything she puts out. I like that your honest! If we like or admire someone, we ought to care enough to be honest. And I myself was split. It was fun at one moment and then it didn't work another moment. I think the hologram work was a neat idea, but not that well executed. I think they overused them and it felt kinda "crowded" at one moment or another. And another disadvantage Madonna has, and you can see it compared to Mariah C., is that she actually moves and performs. It's hard to maintain your tone and voice while also doing what she does. And of course she's always going to try something new so it's a little nerve wracking before she goes on but in general, she rarely has a miss. And frankly, she usually has her track playing in the background as a backup in case she has something go wrong. Same with the superbowl performance-she had that backing track for support but then when she was more idle, like during Like a Prayer with Cee Lo, she sang completely live. So you take what you can and either enjoy it or not!

I'm a huge Madonna fan as well. Who cares about her age? Ageism with women in the industry needs to end.
With that being said, the song isn't good nor bad. It's meh.
I wish she would have came out with 'I Rise' as her first single.
But Madonna, like Cher, is at a point in her career and life that she doesn't feel the need to please, just make music that she's happy with. This song does echo that. I believe she knew it wasn't going to be radio friendly. But with the travels she has been on since her last album do reflect an inner change in her in this song. I respect her for that. I do miss her dance tracks with heavy beats, but I appreciate that she's putting a song out that is completely different from her discography.
Love her or hate her, she's Madonna. She will always be the queen of pop. The world will always stop and listen to what she has to say and the music she releases.
The Women in Music speech in 2016 proves that.
If someone hasn't watched that speech, I suggest watching. It was very emotional.
The world very rarely sees this raw and sensitive side of Madonna.
She delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech addressing sexism, misogyny, and feminism in the music industry.
It just made me love her more.

that effect is actually possible to replicate live. I once read an article about Madonna's Confessions tour. In the article it was explained that Madonna wants to give her fans the same sound as it is on the record. Therefor apple computers with the same effects as used on her vocal are used as a live effect. So everything she sings gets the same treatment as it is on the studio version.
I have seen her a couple of times in concert and there are songs she does lipsync but also ones she does sing live. For this particular performance i think it was done the same way.
When I make a new track in cubase I can put live effects on the track as well - delay, reverb, vocoder, autotune etc. So when you sing live the voice immediately gets that treatment with the live plugins.

I also didn't like it. It sounds like her's last album, it sounds dejavu.
It seems that this album will be the worst album in her career.

In summary, your complaints about Madonnas performance don’t add up to much. So you didn’t like the “conga line?” What does that have to do with vocals? Her vocals are on point whether or not she is singing to a track. Also, how many times do any of us know what a song is about the first time we hear it? You have too much Jonas brothers on your brain, the song they sang was not full of the effects that Madonnas does and is meant to have.

That shadowy bit is just a part of either the lighting or camera rig. There were no actual holograms involved, all of that stuff was digital only and was superimposed over the video footage (which is super impressive technologically because it all happened LIVE, but there was nothing actually happening/visible on stage). I enjoyed your reaction and agreed with a lot of it, but I don't think your assessment of parts of this performance as lipsynced is correct. There was a loud backtrack throughout, but they were singing live as well, and you could hear their live vocals come through in some parts. The end result is almost the same though so it disappointed me, too. And some of that vocal processing is now possible live btw, the compression, reverb, vocoding..

They are using live vocal filtering, technology is like that, i think it sounds a little off because the technology isn't perfect yet. She called a cha cha a conga, that is just ignorance. If you have no appreciation of Latin American culture this isn't for you, and Madonna doesn't care.

What's insane is she has this whole crazy and EXPENSIVE performance, falls flat. Then at the end of the night Mariah Carey, arguably just as big as Madonna, comes out, sings live, blows everyone away. No comparison
