We don't pray to the Saints and Mary Mother of God, We pray for them to Pray for Us because they are there in Heaven with Jesus, and Jesus does not refuse anything of his mother asks of him. It is like as if you would ask me to pray for you in case you need help.
I'm not Catholic but I believe that.
When Christ's followers asked Him how they should pray, He told them quite clearly to direct their prayers and petitions to our heavenly Father. If there were other intermediaries, other alternatives, Jesus wouldn't have withheld such important information from them. Neither Christ nor any other New or Old Testament believer/prophet/apostle prayed to anyone but God---not even once. There is however a teaching in the Old Testament that says anyone attempting to communicate or pray to those who've passed on is guilty of a sin worthy of death. God doesn't lie, and any teaching that contradicts His word is false and actually opens a door for Satan. We as Christians and Catholics have to study and meditate on the Scriptures so that we don't inadvertently sin against the God we serve.
"Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You." Psalm 119:11
