I got hit over the head with both of those VHS tapes of the Titanic. I have indent on the back of my head from that fight I had close to 14 years ago. I will never forget VHS tapes for the rest of my life. Lol 😆

When I was a kid I thought the first tape was titanic 1 and the second tape titanic 2 lol , that's because the film is 3 hours and 14 minutes. Before the DVD they couldn't make just one tape with a such long movie.
I have a Blu-ray/DVD set I bought from Walmart about 7 years ago-2 Blu-rays and 2 DVDs. The DVDs are the same as the VHS tapes, both halves of the movie, whereas the 1st Blu-ray is the entire movie in HD while the 2nd Blu-ray is a bunch of special features.
I have this tape and I got this tape at Half-Price Books back in Tuesday, because it’s brand new factory sealed and I opened up and I also have this on Blu-Ray.
I the other day went to goodwill to see what they had and it ends up they get another one in every week that nobody buys. I go weekly and they always have another. They now have like 15 loose copies and 3 sealed
I just don't understand the people who buy a "rare" copy of a VHS or movie factory sealed just to open it when there's thousands of like new opened copies. WTF is the point?. I'm glad I bought my factory sealed copy before someone bought it just to open it. It's like buying an old rare toy just to open it when there's clearly thousands of the same toy new, but just opened.

I actually did end up back in 1998, putting the two tapes onto a 120 minute VHS in LP. It was very irritating for my OCD, so I never did like two set tapes. I get they wanted the movie in the best quality, but in this case it would have been better, to just put the movie onto a single tape in LP mode. Keep in mind LP and SLP are different, the 6 hour mode had terrible picture quality. Anyway, I still have the dubbed copy I made and it's inside of the original first tape's sleeve. :P
I think James Cameron likes forcing that intermission between the first half and second half of the movie. When they play it in theaters they will often stop it for intermission at the exact same place it stops on the VHS. It is kind of nice. Allows people to use the restroom, talk, grab some food then settle back into the movie. It's back in theaters for its 25th anniversary Feb 10, 2023 btw

Can anyone answer my question? I was always confused back in 1998 as to why this was released on 2 tapes in the US release of Titanic, but only 1 in the UK? Does that mean the version we got here in the UK was lower quality ?

The good thing about Blu-ray is it supports much more variable bitrates and tons of capacity so that was the first time they didn’t need to split it on home video. Hell, even _Gone With the Wind_ came on one Blu-ray Disc for the entire movie itself.

Actually, ShopKo is a nationwide chain. I shopped at one when I lived in Bend, Oregon.
I think they're mostly in the midwest though. I know there are none on the east coast.

It depends on the store where you buy from. Usually high quality costs more.
