    Ford is widely credited with killing off the electric car back in the first decade of the last century. Battery-powered vehicles were just as popular as those with internal combustion engines and there was a sort of Betamax-versus-VHS battle to see which would be the dominant way of propelling the horse replacement. Then Ford started making the Model T in 1908, brought petrol engines to the masses and the rest is history.
    Perhaps it’s not a surprise then that Ford has been slow off the mark producing its first proper electric car. The company has flirted with them in the past with concept cars and the odd experimental van, but has then quietly given up.
    But now, Ford is getting serious. So serious in fact that it is betting on its most precious horse - the Mustang brand. The company’s first ‘proper’ electric car will wear the galloping pony badges of its most iconic car.
    Unlike the Mustangs we all know, the Mustang Mach-E is not a sleek two-door coupe. To the horror of traditionalists, this is an SUV - although it’s pretty far removed from the boxy-shaped off-roaders which usually fall into that category. No, this car is an SUV in the same way that a BMW X4 or a Tesla Model Y can be described; four-door, swoopily-styled and high-riding.
    So, does the absence of a V8 engine immediately invalidate the Mustang Mach-E or is good enough to wear the famous badge? Tom Ford finds out.

    Again, another review that misses an important point - everyone mentions the MPG for ICE cars, please quote efficiency - and you will see the Mach-E is quite way down on efficiency.
    75.7 kWh battery giving quoted EPA 210 range : 2.8 miles/kWh
    98.8 kWh battery giving quoted EPA 300 range : 3.0 miles/kWh
    These EPA ranges are well down compared to Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, Renault, etc.
    This car will cost you to run, yes it is more efficient that a e-tron and EQC, but they are really crap efficiency.

      @@tomwookieford8445 While you are sorting that, how about the "charge time 20-80%" (or whatever) which takes no account of the battery size. SO a car with a tiny battery looks better than one with a large one even though the larger might be charging much faster. Why not "miles added per 15 minutes " which would also take drivetrain efficiency into account.

    They say it’s “mass market” but then they want a small mortgage for them! I know the new tech requires expense of design and manufacture but someone needs to loosen their hat charging that money. Who in their right mind is going to be throwing the cost half a house on a top of the range Mach e at 75k? Mass market is something like a focus (and therefore ID3) equivalent. 370 mile+ range, similar accommodation, enough boot space for groceries, no distracting super sized screen ruining night vision and equivalent 0-60 times to its ICE progenitor. Instead of trying to out Tesla Tesla on performance and silly screens make an actual mass market car that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg with super duper performance. Ford would make a killing with one.

    The only time I've recently thrown up in my mouth a little like this was when I heard Miley Cyrus was recording an album of Metallica covers. Semi-sporty? Oh brilliant! Just what I want: a fugly soft-roader that could be thrashed off the lights by a Tesla, wearing a performance badge. Hyundai should put some Lamborghini badges on their Ioniq - they'll sell millions!
    My guess is that Ford are trying to scupper electric cars. When you're calling a "soccer-mom SUV" (as the Americans say) a Mustang, then the SUV craze has officially gone too far.

      @@buddy1155 in the UK people very much care about how much it costs to run a vehicle - be that ICE or EV. I think we should push for efficiency if we can - in pretty much everything. And range is relevant in EV because (at the moment), charging takes much longer than ICE (no matter which way you cut it), and the UK infrastructure is patchy at best if you want to do distance. A 150mile range for an ICE is inconvenient but do-able - less so if you have to charge for 90mins. If range and efficiency aren’t an issue for you, then that’s grand - but they do matter to most!

      @@tomwookieford8445 disagree we should stop focusing on range. Many cars 200miles which is enough for 3hr drive. We need charging speed. We will only get faster charger points if cars can use it and once that happens a 50% charge in under 15mins will give you just enough time to buy a coffee and then a short while later you'll need the loo so another 50% charge. So it's the charging speed that's needed and everyone need to use the fastest charger available to encourage more.

If they want to p*ss all over their heritage and confuse the f*ck out of people, it’s their brand so totally down to them. Would I buy one if I did have the money, probably not. It seems a decent car with some thoughtful touches like the generous frunk but I find the looks a bit anonymous for the amount of cash being demanded and the badging looks cheap to my eyes. I really don’t like the central screen and what looks like a bit of round silver plastic glued to it - wtf is that ? I’m guessing some sort of rotary controller but it looks seriously crap. If I wanted and could afford an electric SUV, I-Pace or XC40 would be on my shortlist but I’d actually buy a Polestar2, that’s one seriously cool car.

    Going back to the Mach-E...
    Facts...
    Mach-E long range is using 88kw battery and SHOULD get 270 MILES EPA range on the single charge.
    Tesla Model Y long range is using 75Kw battery and gets 326 MILES of EPA range.
    So Tesla Model Y long range has 15% LESS battery to be charged, with 20% more range.
    Mach-E maximum charging speed/rate is 150Kw, which is slow!
    Tesla Model Y can charge with 250kw speed/rate.
    Mach-E in 10 minutes charging gets 58 MILES of range.
    Tesla Model Y in 10 minutes charging gets 150 MILES of range !!
    Mach-E is very inefficient car. TESLA MODEL Y is more than 50% efficient than Mach E.
    It will be more than DOUBLE in charging costs for Mach-E to get the same distance/range as TESLA MODEL Y !!

Also it’s a shame that it Olson looks like a petrol car that has been converted to electric and not a ground up ev that it is , as that bonnet is far to long. Rather like Matt Jones below, I think the "controversy" over using Mustang as the model name is total nonsense. To put this into perspective, I am 75 and of an age when the original Mustang mean't Steve McQueen and muscle cars but to the target buyer of this particular car who is probably 30-45 (?), unless they are a total petrol head, Mustang means pretty much nothing to them and their other half. The one thing about this car is apart from the large iPad stuck on the dashboard, it's a pretty good looking EV in a market when most are very ugly of course and like most other EVs, it's pretty much over priced but there you go.

    • @johnknight9150
      @johnknight9150 3 роки тому

      I'm a younger person and the Mustang name still evokes the classic models of the sixties, and even my mum and her friends who drive ten under the limit know what a Mustang is. They should have just called it the Mach-E and given the Mustang name to a muscle car/sports car.

    • @johnhaynes9910
      @johnhaynes9910 3 роки тому

      @@johnknight9150 Hear what you are saying but to put that into perspective in today's environment, the only new 'muscle cars' you are likely to see ICE or EV today will cost a lot of money and be bought by few which is not Ford's aim, this is designed to be a high volume product despite the usual EV premium in the price. Also in it's day and whilst not common in the UK due to as most US cars of the period not being practical, the Mustang in the States was not a high cost niche model because that has never been Ford's market throughout its history. Now specialist competition models like GT40 etc are different but also very rare including at the time.

    • @johnknight9150
      @johnknight9150 3 роки тому

      @@johnhaynes9910 The American muscle car recipe has generally been a huge engine, not much engineering, and a coat of bright paint. I don't think it would take too much of a leap to make an electric version of that.
      A Tesla is full of needless tech and gimmicks - that money could be saved putting more power to the ground.
      It may still end up costing more in the current short term, but battery prices are dropping year-by-year, and in time it should be viable to make something cheaper than a traditional ICE muscle car.
      If anything could be a poster car for electric vehicles (and let's be clear, muscle cars and sports cars are advertisements for a brand, not money makers), it would be a cheap and handsome performance coupe. A Tesla can destroy a muscle car in a drag race, so it's only fair the new generation of Mustang should be able to beat a Tesla at its own game. Which this hideous looking SUV cannot.
