Low doesn't necessarily mean heavy, it's just easier to make it heavy. However, nothing is heavy if the arrangement isn't that good to begin with. Changing dynamics, dramatic silences, a solid groove, and the like will all go a long way toward making something even heavier, enough to the point that a song in E standard can be super heavy.
Seriously, I've heard doom and sludge bands that tune to nothing lower than standard D on a 6 string, but sound heavier than djent bands with 8 string guitars tuned to F#.
Candlemass' first album proves this (and the lead guitarist is playing on like a Fender strat or something (: That sh*t sounds heavy, and foreboding af, they knew how to do it
only reason I tune on D standard is because my voice is a bit deeper than usual, so I have some trouble singing stuff on it's original tuning. instead of having to transpose everything everytime, having my guitar tuned a whole step lower makes it easier for me. wouldn't it be for that I would still be using E standard
Only reason I play in standard B, is because I love that warm tone mixed with distortion. Same riff in E standard usually is not anyless heavier, as the tone becomes sharper. Also, huge fan of melodeath and doom metal.
I’m starting to live in drop c. I started out on bass. Because of that standard guitar tuning sounds really weak to me. Drop c is the Goldilocks zone. Not too low and not super high.
Personally, I use my 7 string in Drop A, where I only down tune the low B to an A and the rest is in standard E. I think it's the perfect balance between brutality, aggression, tuning stability and playability. It's also just easier to learn scales/modes/chords when 6 of your strings are in standard so you can hear what the key actually sounds like when learning new things.
Using fourths instead of fifths when played on the 'E' and the 'A' string are useful especially on 6 string guitars if you wanna have a pseudo extra string cause it kinda "tricks" your brain that you have just omitted the lower root note and are just playing the fifth and the octave of the "omitted note". Honestly writing in E standard is really fun because for me it reminds me of all the classic 80s thrash albums. You can also experiment with sinister chords for death and black metal, with the low e string being a third or fifth as opposed to the tonic. Honestly it all comes down to creativity, you can write something really heavy in E so long as you're intentional with your decision making 🤘🏽
Low =/= heavy and heavy =/= low. I tune low (typically drop A#), but that's just because I like that tuning. The plethora of heavy AF thrash albums in the 80s/early 90s shows how viable E standard is for heaviness.
Some ~15+ years ago a local guitar seller was changing from an Ibanez to Fender retailer and was selling his stock off for wholesale or cheaper cost. Everytime I see one now, I think about how I should have bought the etched HR Giger Ibanez he had listed for $500.
I got almost trapped in 6 string drop tunings and got extremely comfortable writing/playing rhythm with them, but at the beginning of this year, I decided to just lock one of my guitars in standard and I have fallen back in love with it. I also can't agree more about the 4ths
I switch tunings for pretty much every song I write. I don't ever worry about playing live so it's all about experimentation and what works best for the song.
Also don't forget that a big part of a heavy sound comes from the bass. Of course even the bass won't be quite as low in standard, but there is more to heaviness than just bombing out low notes.
People forget How Heavy King Diamond Was then the transition to drop D With Lamb Of God “Laid To Rest” album.I agree,The Golden Era Must Return and I believe it’ll only be up to fellas like Myself and You that may have to bring back the golden era of the 80’s and 2000’s with an original twist!Much Love my brother! #BUFFALO #NEWYORK
I've always thought that E standard can be easily used to heavy genres if the bass is a 5-string one to compliment the guitars with that B string. Cattle Decapitation does something like that with Eb tuning on.

If I were into writing metal tunes with more than one guitarist, I would consider perhaps having both guitars tuned a bit different, to take advantage of not only the ease of certain positions, or the possibility of playing something that you simply couldn't with another tuning, but when doubling lines, the nice chorus effect it would give, as each guitar would be slightly different harmonically. Thanks for your video and your thoughts. This is coming from a guy who really isn't into metal so much anymore, but still appreciates the artform.
Sylosis is another great band playing in E standard.
Also using a 5 string bass or a bass tuned to low B might help, this video does it
Wow! That's brutal! Now it's time to use these tips on an 8 string.
Been a while since I haven't seen you playing this beautiful guitar. Loved the ups and downs
I almost went with lower tunings because E just wasn't heavy enough, then I accidentally inverted a power chord and instantly went 'nvm'...
This gave me some serious early Winds of Plague vibes. People forget most of the Decimate the Weak album is in E, I liked that album!
Sylosis wants their song back.
This was amazing. I personally would like to see more E tuning vids, just to see how deep you can take this.
Standard is always preferred, when I want heavier I just use my 8 string in a standard tuning :)
Those fourths give it a Winds Of Plague type vibe and im all for it.
I got almost trapped in 6 string drop tunings and got extremely comfortable writing/playing rhythm with them, but at the beginning of this year, I decided to just lock one of my guitars in standard and I have fallen back in love with it. I also can't agree more about the 4ths
I love all tunings
The heaviness is more tangible when it is manifested in the middle range. The contrast is higher.
play the e and a string like its drop tuned (so on the same frets). It kinda tricks you and makes it sound like its tuned way lower.
Great tune. Seems like illustrating that point was great inspiration for an awesome track.
That Ibanez look badass! Coolest paintjob I've seen in quite a while.
A fun thing about fourths is that its basically a power chord without the lower note. Megadeth did something like that with a riff from Go To Hell.
I love how you make it look so easy!!!
That's the most badass-looking 6-string I've ever seen.

Those sweeps were clean af 🤘
I've always thought that E standard can be easily used to heavy genres if the bass is a 5-string one to compliment the guitars with that B string. Cattle Decapitation does something like that with Eb tuning on.
That reverse sweeping is GODLIKE!
