The UN climate summit COP29 came to an end in Azerbaijan’s Baku this weekend after talks continued until early Sunday. Developed nations forced a deal agreeing to provide $300 billion a year to the developing world from 2035 in climate finance. However, India has rejected the agreement and it’s not the only one unhappy. Palki Sharma tells you why.

The reason why Developed countries are blamed is because they have contributed the most in polluting the environment in the last century.
All the climate change we are seeing is because of emissions released by Developed countries. That's what Many studies and reports say as well.
First of all 300 billion is not for few countries but many countries(more than 100), Trump has already said he won't provide a penny for climate change so this 300 billion will be reduced to 200 Billion at most, also Western countries has always defaulted on their promises we don't know whether this little chunk will be distributed or not!! , also most of this billion $ package will go to lesser developed countries. India will hardly get 5-6 Billion $, that's it. Which is nothing for us. Others will not get much as well as it will be distributed in so many countries.

I think Developing countries need to get together and re organise supply chain. Also reassign price of raw materials to the west and protect supply Chains of Global south.

This is partly already happening. The flow of Russian oil into India and eventually into EU was one such example. Something the US wanted to stop to inflate oil prices. Other such examples also exist happening through BRICS and the use of local currencies instead of dollar.

Now developing nations have the technology to create cleaner factories. Instead most of them build the most dirty factories because they are the cheapest. They will not work with Western nations because of their rules and cost, so they instead buy the cheaper products from China. Meanwhile China needs energy and builds more coal power plants than the whole world combined. Now countries like India, Indonesia and Brazil want a piece of the pie, so they compete with China. Now they also ramp up their production factories. We are not even talking about the largest oil manufacturer in the world or the cement industrie, which are some of the planets biggest polluters. Where do people think these companies are located. Somehow all the fault circles back to the Westen countries. This is why this crap will never be solved, until we get some major scientific breakthroughs.

You think this is not good? Or are you unhappy some corporate constructed it? In the next 10 years, 10 nuclear power plants that have been commission will be constructed. These are all clean energy.
So perhaps that's why they didn't give developing countries 1.3 trillion every year? They lack the necessary controls and regulations to put the money to good use?

I actually just finished a cruise ship cruise that included visits to Singapore, Dubai, and Mumbai. I was appalled at the extent of air pollution in those places. Buildings such the Burj Kalifa ( Dubai), was literally hazed out in the distance. When I asked about it, there seemed to be no logical answer. There were no factories visibly belching fumes to be seen. So this is something that needs to be prioritorally addressed

So, let us all rethink while we are ordering online or swiping that card in a retail store or ordering at a restaurant - rethink just a little. Buy (say) 10% less. Buy local & consume fresh (thereby reducing packaging). Insist on good quality and not items with "planned obsolescence". Do this and you know where it will hurt the most.

It's mainly caused by farmers burning stubbles in Punjab and Haryana. The farmers were ordered to not burn stubbles, but they ignored the orders and burned the stubbles anyway.. It has nothing to do with climate change.

India doesn't give a fluke unless it is requested. Developed countries requested developing nations including India too to come together in reducing carbon footprint. That's the starting point of these happening whatever summits. If you don't like Ind shouting then developed countries shut their mouths first. India will do whatever and how much possible.

The EU has a cross border carbon tax. There is no reason the Global South cannot reach a deal on implmementing such a tax at regional organizations like AEAN that targets the developed nations imports, raising the 900 billion needed. TRUMP style!

As an Indian yes I agree it was reckless over industrialization of Europe accelerated the process of climate change. But we can't blame europe alone. We must take responsibility for our actions. We must find solutions before it's too late.
I disagree with most comments on this post. However, I totally agree with your view sir. I think that the West is tired of being accused and blamed for everything that is wrong. Nobody acknowledges the West for all the developments in science, politics and technology that have benifited most of the world. We don't see what these countries propose to do with these trillions of dollars and our governments are reluctant to handout these sums of cash. The world was industrialised before we had the technology to know what havoc it would cause. Anyway, I think that you have the best comment here..

Climate change is damn expensive even Vijayawada Andhra Pradesh submerged recently costing at least 4000$ per family in furniture and electronics damages, India Delhi is grasping for quality fresh air.
How is this $300 billion climate change fund get divide among all the developing nations annually? Who is the gate keeper? Who is administrating the climate change programs in each country? Who is ensuring these funds are use for climate change purposes? Etc….

It's controlled by GCF board or green climate fund board set up under UN framework convention on climate change, under guidance by COP. It has its accountability, functions and mechanisms listed... one such mechanism is based on carbon credits generated.. it doesn't get more official and well governed than this.

When you think about it that's reasonable. Uncertainty in yield, unstable prices, how would a father adopt any sustainable way when they are not earning enough? Govt should do something about it, like establishing a unit to do that in sustainable way for the farmers.

Why do we need consensus on the target amount? If India (or any other country) feels that is inadequate, it is free to spend more. So why is the Indian government not doing more to reduce fossil fuel consumption, such as mass implementation of solar panels and introduce law to restrict sale of ICE vehicles? In contrast, India's neighbour China has implemented solar farms en-mass with 50% of new cars sold are EVs and has 25 nuclear power plants under construction.
