My name is Jack Wang - I’m a microbiology professor and in 2020 I was named the Australian University Teacher of the Year. Today I find out if any of that matters anymore, and whether or not I am completely replaceable by AI. The platform that’s getting a lot of attention right now is chat GPT, a version of AI that’s optimised for conversational dialogue - it’s the most human AI has appeared to most people in a very long time. Sure these are important conversations, but am I the only the one thinking selfishly here? About the inevitable logical conclusion to all of this? What I’m trying to say is - are my days numbered? Is my job as a scientist, microbiologist, and college professor - going to be replaced by AI sooner rather than later? Instead of philosophising about it, I’m going to put it to the test and ask chat GPT the questions I would ask myself when preparing for a new semester of teaching. Here's what I found...

You should do a video talking about if AI will replace your job with every other new GPT generation. So you did this video with chat gpt-3, then do a video like this again when they release chat gpt-5, then again with chat-gpt-7. It would be interesting
Thanks for the feedback! GPT is moving very quickly, hard to make evergreen content. All the points I made for GPT3 still stand for GPT4 I think? Who knows what will come next!

I think it will happen. Schools can use Tesla bot once it arrives, cameras, etc. Tesla bot can walk around, tons of knowledge, etc.
I think so too - depends on how quickly colleges adapt and what students will want to pay for
Ai and all the algorithms made cant 100% guarantee what a person will choose in the future. People may choose to use Ai instead of paying for college to get a degree for a job that may be replaced with Ai by 2030. College loans will be like paying for car payments on a car that doesn't work. What is or is not better is irrelevant what is most popular wins in the tech game and tech is running the show now. Ai wins in my opinion. People want to pick and choose how and what they learn. Soon their will be no more seasoned professionals with work or advanced experience because we are all learning this new tech at the same time. I think having a career will be the next to go and that was what a college education was meant for. Since Ai has started replacing our jobs because it is more efficient than a human , what is their left to be good at in the future. People will have to be a jack of all trades but a master at none. Mastery is Ai's job. If we look at the history of what has happened when new tech meets old world business, the new tech always wins. Napster destroyed the music stores , Netflix destroyed video rental stores, Social media destroyed actual socializing with friends at bars and restaurants. Reports are even saying brain implants should fix mental disorders and replace the need for phycologists. I liked the video and wish you success for your channel, this may be the best thing your doing to prepare for the future.
Lots of interesting points - thank you for taking the time to comment on the video. The prevailing thought in industry right now is that we will be “replaced” not by AI, but by other people who know how to use AI more effectively than we do. Who knows what it will look like in 12 months time!
Yes, it will replace some. Those who do not teach to think and do not provoke discussion. In communicating content from textbooks or articles, I am simply better than them.

As if university administrators care about "teaching to think" or anything like that.
They care about pass rates, and about cutting costs for their for-profit university.
They'll replace adjuncts like me with this sooner or later. University administration is about making money, not about improving humanity.

I really wish it did because I'm gonna be honest that college professors are very bad at teaching, and that I believe most students learn more on UA-cam than from Professors
