I don't love the game, but I do love that it captured my 8- and 10- year old's little game hearts. I bought it a month ago, but it's almost always out on the table. Easily our most played game this year. And despite how good or bad it is, the fact that it's gotten us to turn off the telly and spend time together makes it a winner.
That's some of the best praise a game can get! Cheers to many more matches.
It’s a winner in our family as well. My daughter is 4 and she enjoys it. But I can also easily bring it as a filler when playing with my heavy euro loving adult gaming friends :)
That's what I thought as well. This game may not be the best dexterity game but it will appeal to children and it looks like a fun family game!
If it eases your mind, I quite liked this format and length for a review. Didn't feel rushed or unstructured at all. Nice work!
That Quinns bit was peak comedy gold.
I’m intrigued by this game in a way I cannot describe.
OTOH I showed it to my wife and she asked why Daniel Radcliffe was reviewing a board game.
I completely lol'd. Thank you. Hahaha
LOL
This new guy is starting to grow on me honestly.
Nice video!
I have no earthly idea what kind of drugs this review is on, but I love it.
What about Icecool? It's a lot of fun in a great presentation. It's become a favorite of my teens.
This more looks like Tom is just giving a tour of his home
And showing off his musical tastes.
That TV over the stove tho
@@micahbf Yeah, that's posh!
Fair enough...GRANDAD!
Flat out crying with laughter at that, especially given the age banter on the podcast.
The timing on that was just perfect!
I was cackling at this one!
I love how clearly proud Tom is of his first apartment. Congratulations, Tom!
Shit, that's his first apartment? Could do a hell of a lot worse
Needs to change those kitchen tiles and take away the flatscreen above the cooker.
Absolutely kinetic editing turns a dusty old 'board' 'game' 'review' into something I couldn't stop watching until it's all through.
Game looks fun and all, but heck, this is a good video.
This is a game you can play with a friend you haven't seen in a while. You can talk. You can drink beer. You can goof around. This is niche board game checkers. It's not amazing, but it's easy and you can play it with anyone quickly. It's welcome in my collection. My other dex games are huge affairs. Junkart? AMAZING, but quite a production and stressful and if someone bumps the table, the game is ruined. Meeple Circus? A riot. But even more stress inducing from the timing, and it has the table bump problem too. Kabuto? A bit sturdier, less thinky, WAY less stressful. It's like if a dex game was a relaxation technique. No outrageous highs, no real lows, just time with people you care about and fun shapes on a little platform.
My thoughts exactly. It might not be the game that makes the evening but it might well be the one to save it.
I'm very intrigued by it and I think it's the "fun shapes on a little platform" that really does it for me. Personally, I find the colors, shapes, and artwork all quite beautiful.
I think it can be lost at times that something being "simple" doesn't mean it isn't fun or has merit. A game like this could be an introductory into more diverse games. Or it could just be something that anyone can pick up and play with little to no knowledge and have fun at say a party or family gathering. Different people respond to things differently but something like this appears to have universal appeal. It's fun, it's quick, and there's a range of complexity that allows for some degree of decision making.
Tom, what am I looking at in your kitchen? Is that a flat screen tv over the stove?
ps, love your crazy reviews, thanks
I also came here wondering this, lol. My best guess is that it's some kind of vent or window to let out smoke from the stove but I don't know why it would be angled that way 🤔
Tilt-away hood?
Stove hood I think, the panel pulls out to cover the area above the stove top and vents out. Looks like a nice compact design for a modern kitchen.
@@roryevans5032 So, that's what it was. Never seen one like it. I thought it was mirror for disabled people so they can cook from the wheelchair or something..
after hearing you defend this on the podcast a few episodes back, i'm so happy it made it's way to a video review!
I always enjoy Tom's reviews when it feels like you've been cornered by your odd cousin who is odd and cool in equal parts.
I see Tom taking aspirations from Action Button and honestly? Yes please. Just don't make 10 hour reviews that almost get you killed. Please.
Was gonna say, this had a distinct Tim Rogersian flair to it
This is perhaps one of your best written and edited videos, Tom. I loved how you jumped around from scene to scene. That took a lot of work and planning. Plus the script was very mature and wry. I dare say you are perhaps better at this than Quinns and Matt.
This is one of the most friendly games I’ve seen, and has definitely snuck its way into my wish list. I feel like I could play this with literally anyone and it would be comfortable as either the focus or the background
Tom, your delivery and edits on "Fair enough, grandad" made me laugh harder than any video review in recent memory. Thanks for that, great work.
That grandad line made me crack up. Good job, Tom.
Tom, why do you have a TV hanging above your stove?
Tom giving off big Tim Rogers energy in this video, which can only be a good thing
HELLO. And welcome to board games
This was one of the best SUSD reviews this year. Don't beat yourself up. It had the verve and speed of some of the early stuff. Also, I enjoyed the b-roll to videogame jazz.
Klask would be a good alternative for an exciting dexterity game that fits on a normal table.
I’ve played this with 2 and 3 players. All times we had fun. We just ignored the special wrestler cards and did the junior league which is more straight forward. Instead of having to learn extra rules, you just get the signature pieces and go.
6:41 Years weren't kind to Tom Vasel...
*SMASH*....fair enough....GRANDDAD. Tom is wonderful and I love his energy.
Tom I'm concerned at the amount of house plants you've seemed to have acquired during this past year... Are you ok buddy? Blink twice if you need help. Is Quinns holding you against your will? We want to help...
looks like it could be a cool time killer between bigger more beefy games =)
It's really bugging me (oh that's a pun!) but during the arcade sequence I recognised the music but just couldn't place it! Anyone able to tell me where i'd have heard it before?
30 sec into the video : “ok, take my like, ye handsome basterd!”
This is not a dexterity game! It doesn't require, or reward, fine motor skills. Pushing a disc onto the board is not something that some people will do better than others, or that there's any kind of nuance or trick to. My wife's got such bad arthritis that she can barely use her fingers at all, and she is just as good at playing this game as I am.
The game is about figuring out which disc to push, and where to push it. It's not about gently removing things or making sure a structure maintains its balance or threading one thing under another, or any of the other things that dexterity games require you to do. You're analyzing the physics of the board, picking a move, and then seeing how it plays out.
We've been saying this, but no one believes us ;)
I think that this was pretty damn good, this review really felt in your groove Tom.
Also boardgametables absolutely have the best lil stash of games going round right now, QE, On Tour, Bites are all fantastic games that maybe not like the top tier, best things you'll ever own, but you'll drag them out more frequently than a big box steigmayer
I'm a little concerned for what looks like a large TV over the stove? Hopefully it's shielded by something :)
Was thinking the same! 🤣 Now I want that.
got called out on the pod. I feel seen ;)
Hi, I'm trying to make a board game, but I'm stuck in a fog, a fog that is always changing shape, but I have a idea that I want to create, a world to create, lovable characters you can bond with, it's a TTRPG but a little different, and designing it by myself is very hard, it's like solving a Rubriks cube for the first time with no help, I have ideas, but it's hard to grasp this fog, but the more pieces of the puzzle I'm trying to solve, the more the fog takes form and I can grasp it, and soooo many questions, like, how big should the board be, how can I make my game feel like you just entered a new world like Jumanji, what colors should I used, and I need these questions answered by real board game players and designers, because they know this stuff, so if you are one of these, please, help me, I beg you, my brain hurts of all this FOG!
Is that a wilmots warehouse blanket?
I approve!
Have you played the kids game Push a Monster? This is kind of the reverse of that, but more in line with casino games. Looks fun, even if the big blog discs are very boring looking.
Kabuto Sumo ASMR when?
I heard Daft Punk is playing at Tom's house.
Tom's house.
He'll show you the ropes kid, show you the ropes.
This game looks delicious.
My friend's dog Pepper awarded it the "Pepper Award for Most Delicious Game"
Damn. I was NOT supposed to buy new games before I have played the previous ones...
Nacht der Magier (Magician's Night) is a similar game, but played in the dark with luminescent pieces. :)
This actually looks pretty fun: a lot of forward planning and a little bit of luck.
The accuracy to which a computer can reproduce a Welsh accent is giving me an existential crisis. Par for the course with a SUSD review to be honest. Great video
The War on Drugs merch!!! LCD Soundsystem poster?? I like you Tom
Best Tom's review... So far! The growth is astonishing and so promising **
The gag about the hole for the dexterity games made me make noises
! ! ! how is no one talking about the pic-perfect thumbnail of this review? ? ?
I accidentally watched this at 1.5x speed. I have to say, IT WAS AWESOME. It took a good review and turned it into peak Tom, somehow.
As mentioned in the video, the game gets WAY better if you play it fast. Less thinking, more playing. It tends to drag out and never end otherwise.
I can recommend houseruling that all push the pieces inside the brown outer ring to increase the impact. (Saw quackalope suggest it, have tried and enjoyed it).
On three players, as one was eliminated, we imposed final rush - two pieces pushed per turn to end the game quickly and start again.
I would encourage house rulings in general. The game is light and not to be taken too seriously. :)
I heard Quinns's critique in Werner Herzog's voice.
Kabuto Sumo is absolutely amazing with kids (mine is 4 and plays it already). But in addition to that, it’s also a nice filler when playing with more serious gamers. These things combined really make it worth having. If you have kids, that is :)
GRANDAD
I don't know why but I think this became one of my favourite SUSD reviews.
Shoutout to the real star of the review, Smiley Cube
Wilmot 😍
I love the ActionButton-esque delivery style here. I was half expecting to see Tim Rogers pop in for a cameo.
Hey Tom, this is my favourite of your videos so far. You just seem really at ease with yourself, and so the video comes off as 'effortless'. Nice job! (Oh, I liked the actual content too ;) )
Make your website accessible to people with a VPN
LCD Soundsystem poster and a War on Drugs t-shirt? Previous sightings of Los Campesinos merch? Tom clearly has impeccable musical taste.
Love these off the cuff messy reviews. Perfect for the memorable quick spotlight games like kabuto sumo ans railroad inc.
That's some good B roll
Off topic question: what's the thing hanging above Tom's range in his kitchen? It looks like an oven hood combined with a television.
I was wondering the same thing.in terms of "what" It is, It looks like a tv with a splash screen in front of it... But that doesn't answer the more important question of "why..."
Great video! Very entertaining 😁
Down the hall shot really sold the video, "Hey, let me show you something cool". Save that clip for other reviews. I really enjoyed the less structured format.
Nice LCD soundsystem poster :)
Shout out to the table the size of New Zealand
This was Tom’s best review yet, great editing as well
Great review - I think it's pitched perfectly. Kabuto Sumo is absolutely no more or less than fun than it looks. I happen to really like it - super-easy to set up and play, and very quick to reset and try a new character or different tactics. If it looks fun to you, you'll probably like it
In the words of Brian Limond:
I like Turkish Delight. I do. A lot if people don't like Turkish delight, I mean Fry's Turkish delight. The type with the chocolate on it and the purple wrapper. But I like it. A lot of people say "ugh Turkish delight that's disgusting. How can you eat that? It's like eating perfume, it's like eating old women's perfume. Like lavender water, or rose water or whatever it is. How can you like that?" But I like it. I like turkish Delight. I don't like it enough to get it for every day, or every week. In fact I can't remember the last time I got a Turkish delight. But every now and then, I'll be in a shop and I'll walk past the shelves with all the chocolate and I'll see a Turkish delight and I'll get it. It's nice, I like it. I like Turkish Delight.
Tom I just love you and your reviews!! :'D
I would argue that technically it is not a dexterity game. Your own dexterity in adding a piece should not actually be relevant. That is why you don't push the pieces in quickly, you have to do it steadily. That way it isn't the force or momentum of adding a piece, but purely it's geometry.
I understand with your arguments, and agree with them, however I don’t know what category it could be in. Maybe it’s the exception that proves the rule. You are moving pieces, and that’s it. Something like “Don’t Break the Ice” is considered dexterity even if your personal dexterity is irrelevant and only your choices matter. Everything you said is correct, but I don’t know what category it does go in. Saying “area control” seems disingenuous even if it is technically true. I think we have to call it a dexterity game even if it doesn’t fit there. It doesn’t fit anywhere else either. Where would you put it?
Based on this, is Jenga also not a dexterity game?
@@MClilypad I would say no, because your dexterity pulling the piece out is relevant. The speed and angle that you do so has direct impact on the results of the game. That should not be the case in Kabuto Sumo.
@@MClilypad perfect example. If it’s not dexterity, what is it?
Hall of fame worthy SUSD review
Tom, you're awesome, I love you!
This doesn't look exciting like some dexterity games. Rather, it's a quiet, focused game you play with a close friend.
It sure as hell looks more accesible for some people
Thanks so much for the love!! 15 times in 7 days is a pretty solid play count too ;) And yes, its available right now!
I just love your silly reviews... :) i'm sure that Covid broke you and made you sligthly insane :,D #KeepDoingWhatYouAreDoing
Damn Tom, your comedic timing is perfection.
Tom's best review by far
Can we please get another video of the SUSD teams collections for 2021 (including Tom and Ava) please?
Backed the Kickstarter for this game based upon this review, when it arrived it got played four times the first day. Which is more than many of the games I own have ever been played.
Insert Samuel L Jackson asking you to say Kabuto Sumo One More Time! I dare you! I double dare you!
Actually Kabuto means the helmet samurai wore, and the most famous type of beetle in Japan is called Kabuto Mushi (samurai helmet bug) because its horns look like a samurai helmet. :)
Kids in Japan used to capture these bugs in forests and then have them fight. This tradition was the inspiration for the Pokemon games.
I ordered this on the 5th Nov after watching the video, and it just arrived in the UK (12th Nov) from the US, well packaged and immediately got the thumbs up from my wife
+1 for the Tom Fan Club. Fundamentally clever critique that is also incalculably silly - that's what has always appealed (to me) about SUSD!
Awwww snap! Long time watcher first time commenter. Bloody hell! Your videos are just getting better and better! Absolute joy to watch! Well done guys.
God this made me laugh 😂
congrats on the new space
Great vid. What a champ
I'm not sure what I just watched, and does tom own a portrait of a pear king? Did he have that before starting to work at susd??
Wonderful review!
I have only one dexterity game in my collection and it is "Flick of faith".
I highly recommend it :-)
Nevertheless, this one looks interesting, even for such dexterity type haters as me :-)
I've shown Kabuto Sumo - just online, I don't own a copy - to six people, and four of them went 'oh this is great.' The four that did we re all parents, and ALL of them pointed out that it'd be useful for playing with their kids.
How is it that this guy is even better at making these game review videos (or whatever they are) than the guys who actually invented the art form (and then stupidly brilliantly hired him)?
in the rules it doesn't say what the edge of the arena is.. some abilities talk about touching the edge.. is it the outer dark brown circle or the outer maximum limit near the void?
Wonderful review
I like this guy…
Great review. But maybe not start off every sentence of the review with KABUTO SUMO. 😆
The student has become the master.
This game has great accessibility. This really has a "zen" feel about it - a "quiet simplicity" to it.
That's weird. I was playing a 2p pusher for the first time in 30 odd years this weekend.
Great review, thanks Tom.
GRAND DAD😆😆😆😆😆
Worth it for the physical laptop comedy alone.
What a fantastic video. Adding my voice to the choir, the editing is out of this world and reminds of how early episodes of Archer were constantly cutting from a scene to another in way that turned those cuts into laughs.
