- Amsterdam Doesn't Want Tourists. Why is Overtourism Bad? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Amsterdam has banned cruise ships from its city centre. The Dutch capital is trying to limit visitor numbers and curb pollution. Overtourism has become a problem for many countries and cities, including Amsterdam, Bali, Thailand, Italy, and Peru. Why is overtourism bad? What are countries doing about it?

@@bazle64 Lol.. 15 million was last year total tourist count in India... Can understand your frustration 😅
What a horrible video. Shame on you for promoting the wef agenda.
Same Happening in Manali (India) in may-june 😐😐,, I'm not against Tourism But Government should Limit the number of tourist arrival in some areas and I advise Tourist to Visit Much Needed and Unexplored Northeast Part of India Like Arunachal Pradesh 🙂🙂
Manali is our emotion

That is one of the reasons I will never visit Manali and many northern beautiful places. I am sick and tired of these tourists throwing trash every where and not respecting the natural beauty of the state. Our Indian brothers and sisters don't really care about the place but give more importance to themselves.
This is totally happen in Bali, Many local people complain because of the bad behavior of tourists, lots of tourists who do not comply with local regulations, drive recklessly.
I think the bad behaviour by tourists has to stop.

here in India it's overpopulation crisis, people are just breeding like rabbits , yes , admin should put some limit/restrictions otherwise these places will lose their essence.
Avide evda poyath?
If all these restrictions are implemented in India due to overcrowding, pollution garbage, selfie etc. then god forbid what pandemonium will the opposition rake up!! Its time that we start controlling thr number of Indian tourists visitng temples and holy places like Kedarnath, Amarnath etc, Leh, Ladakh Manali etc. These are eco sensitive places and its time that we start doing something to save them.
Restrictions of making children should be the first priority of India...
amsterdam is not for pilgrims
not a pilgrimage place
If such restrictions are made in India then Congress will get a chance to whisper to George Soros & son Alexander Soros NGO Open Society to pass on some million dollars to create a narrative 🤣🤣🤣😂
Why not destroy these Hindu pilgrimage places. Like thousands of them are already destroyed by M3 (Mughal, Missionaries and Marxists) crusaders. And they're still looting Hindu temples and using the loot against Hindu and India.
@@rose-kp4lf you idiot or what he is talking about two Different cases but taking first as an example. We all know Amsterdam is not a pilgrimage but it attracts a lot of tourists same way Kedarnath temple is a pilgrimage site and attracts a lot of tourists but it's situated in an ecosensitive zone and it's hampering ecology of the area.
I decided not to travel this year. I am treating my home and garden like a boutique hotel. Watching travel videos. Trying to have fun in my own city……What a relief !
Can we do business together
Love it ❤.
Same!
Same....travel.plans abroad are to towns or places nobody goes to, more interesting, less crowded. Who wants to visit a crowded tourist trap?
I remember visiting Amsterdam in the 80s. It was a marvelous place to visit then. There were tourists, but not too many. There was still plenty of room to walk around and the canals were beautiful.
The Dutch were very welcoming and friendly towards tourists then.
I am sorry it has come to this..
Social medias make people crazy for photos, they want their friends and family to know that they are having all fun and happiness while the others watching them on social media and not visiting those places don't.😢
Yup, I had a friend who used to complain about people who did. Then all of a sudden, he started doing it. It's a way of bragging 🙄
I have never seen a country where people are so obsessed with selfies as India. All ages, across the board. It's seriously annoying and troubling.
Selfies suck, we've all been guilty of it....maybe we need to ask more people to take.our.picture...lol
It's usually FAKE fun and happiness though.
Sometimes I don't take pictures when I travel and people think i was lying that I was traveling😂 If its not documented it didn't happened-sadly thats the mindset a lot of people have
Quality of Tourists are not like before. The New generations does not respect the cleaniness, rules and the Country. Its a failer in the long run.
I so much liked this segment.... Its not just the foreign destination but even local destinations too which have become so much overcrowded. All in the name of selfies and photograph.....
India should promote adventure sports, sports, films for tourism. Not just ancient buildings. Have tourism that pays to feed animals. Wild life tourism. Cruises. Boats to holdiday
There should be cooling period of 3 months for particular country to recover all its peace and let nature get time to clean its surroundings. Every country can restrict dedicated months where it can block travel
This is good for the environment. The Philippines did it a few years ago with Boracay. Giving the place a breather and stablishing new laws to safeguard the environment .
Sadly it seems the Mayor is liking the idea of removing the tourist limit in Boracay and bring back the way on how Boracay received tourist before the cleanup. He was even smiling when he stated the Secretary of tourism reprimanded him for some instances they went over yhe limit of tourist coming in, instead of being sorry and say he will do something about it he instead remarked what can he do, he can't stop more people from coming.
Reducing visa-free stay will help reduce the risk of overtourism. Also some cities don't want to promote tourism, the Balsa in my town was once popular before the COVID-19 pandemic, now it was vanished and cannot be restored.
Famous tourist places in India like Kashmir ,Himachal and Uttarakhand are bearing the brunt of overtourism ,be it regular tourists or religious. There is definitely a need to curb the flow of this mad rush everywhere at these destinations where we actually end up regretting our decisions as why the hell did we came here .
Manali is disgustingly crowded, never again
Agreed, but we are also part of that crowd.. so can’t blame 😅

YES! This is SO TRUE! Thank you for articulating this issue which is so pressing but which is so little discussed. I live in Edinburgh, which, like Amsterdam and many other places, has become a victim of its own success in attracting visitors, in the case of Edinburgh, to its Festival and Fringe. Once upon a time, back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, these were outstanding cultural events: now, the Fringe is more like a Zombie Apocalypse, as ten thousand talentless teenage wannabes and a quarter of a million aimless gawpers invade our city, trash the place for a month, then depart, leaving us taxpayers to pay for the clean-up.
I agree 💯.
Over turism is bad for any country.
I,m not saying to stop Turismo completely...
But the governments should limit the number of turists per year...

True Amsterdam struggles from over tourism. Most people who are visiting The Netherlands, visit for a day or two but forget the fact that the country has a lot more to offer.
If more European countries legalized marijuana and prostitution Amsterdam would empty out.

Ah, Sitting in India I can definitely feel the need for this in major tourist places. I am sure we know those places.
Or at least educate tourists about how to behave with the environment or locals while traveling.
Yes
I don’t think it’s the average European tourists that you’ll have to worry about being inconsiderate towards your environment; they’re the generation that’s been greenwashed since the 1970s. Chinese and American tourists are generally the worst.
Let's make every place so beautiful that everyone visits everywhere
Same in our Himachal and uttarakhand
Rome and Paris you can’t even walk because of mass tourism
There are other places in the world to visit where there is less tourism - The world is a big place. The same ole touristy spots suck anyways. I just came back from Oaxaca Mexica and there were not many tourist and they cater to tourist there - had a wonderful time.
Close down the red light district, problem solved.

It’s high time people get happiness without traveling, it has become kind of necessity for people to travel, as if achieving something great, how much ever stress full it can get! What used to be a luxury is now a regular middle class family’s unwanted indulgence! Even the thought of traveling has become stressful 😀
I like your take normal guy. I play tourist in my own local towns of southern California, my world footprint isn't all over the place.....support local businesses and I enjoy what we have here. Fortunately we have some.decent beaches, snow in winter and warm deserts in winter too..fair weather year round by the coastal towns, amusement parks, great music entertainment and tours come through
This created by social media and the industry 😮
Similar situation arises when people rush to our hilly areas in winter to enjoy snowfall and in summer to mountains and rivers
Most of those numbers come from the cruise ports! Those people are not actually flying there and staying in the hotels etc. I personally don't want to go where I am not wanted. Spend your money wisely folks!!!
They are reluctant to tour, the European lifestyle is very lonely most of the time you live alone or with your partner and have a very limited friends circle. So, they travel to move away from their loneliness.
Exactly 💯 percent....
You are highly mistaken for majority 😂

I now live in Central America, I left the U.S. 8 years ago. I own a beachfront home, in a very beautiful part of the country. Myself and the locals fear more and more tourists arriving. Tourist from North America are often rude, feel entitled, don't obey traffic laws, don't respect the culture, are loud and are confrontational.

Agreed, weed should be only available for Dutch citizens. Problem solved. Most people come to Amsterdam to do what;s illegal in their own country, except euthanasia, not so much demand for that 😜
The first one to make cannabis legal. Now it is worried 😆
There;s the rub, it should be only legalized for Dutch citizens, where it was intended for. It's mostly used by tourist, who then make a lot of problems that Dutch people don,t. SO I would say .Cut the weed of for tourist. problem solved. And then the ladies of the red light district can do their LEGAL work without getting over run by tourist who just come to watch. And yes I said LADIES.

@@rakhimukerji7937 Good point. The rest of the world is being over crowded with tourists. I know that Nairobi Kenya is a beautiful place to visit - but alot of people think its underdeveloped. I think people should still think that way - lets keep Nairobi a good destination point and less crowded.
Yes, due to post pandemic recovery, people stuck at home for a long time have pent-up demand for travel, and so there's.a tourist explosion in many places. Here in Chiang Mai, it was a huge shock to suddenly have lots of tourists...I know it's good for the economy, but I miss the quiet and beautiful natural environment the past couple of years. So many events going on all the time that it's hard to find a normal day to just work, shop, clean, etc. The main problem about tourism in general is that it is based on something that is inherently unethical and unsustainable: UNEQUAL FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATES and PEOPLE STAYING SHORT TERM IN A PLACE AND SPENDING MUCH MORE BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW LOCAL PRICES. The collapse of tourism during the pandemic (with our Night Bazaar shutting down and Thapae Road filled with homeless people) shows that a city or country should not depend on it as its main or only source of income...it needs to have other backup industries. The Internet has also made travel much less exciting and discovery-oriented than it used to be...more about showing off and less about new experiences. I was so interested to visit so many countries when I was younger, but now, because I can talk with people around the world using Zoom and watch videos on UA-cam of any place, I have little interest to travel anymore.
With the amount of travel now, it's easy to meet people of many cultures while staying in one place and have experiences with those cultures just as intense as if you went to the country...for example, here in Chiang Mai, I've been able to work with scholarship students from. Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Comoros, and Eritrea, countries I wouldn't want to go and stay in to work due to political problems and restrictions on the freedom of females there, but I've been able to learn so much about their cultures. Even living in Kuala Lumpur, I was able to teach Koreans, people from the Middle East, and people from the former USSR, and shared an apartment with Nigerians, and learnt so much about traditional Chinese culture (many of it which no longer exists in China) through Chinese friends and apartment mates and attending Chinese festivals and funerals. So a lot of tourism now is just unnecessary and pointless, but maybe more important in terms of seeing different natural environments than for cultural reasons.
The airline ads alone with all the False Advertising, just being legal. Then yes, unequal exvhange rates. I have not seen a white man in years though and i miss intelligent conversations with Scandinavians, French, Swiss and Austrians. Some places have no foreigners. But i traveled and met 1 weird and bitchy Australian and 1 fun but crazy Japanese.
send those tourists to south africa, there less and less people are visiting the country due to the high crime rate being done on tourists,

There was an interview recently to the Mayor regarding Boracay, it seems he is liking the idea of removing the limit of tourist in that island. He even happily remark how he was reprimanded by the Secretary regarding some instances they allowed overlimiting the number of tourist coming in. He shrug it of saying what can they do about it, it's not like we can stop people from coming.
Great idea. Overcrowding, infrastructure burden, traffic congestion, nature destruction, long waiting, hospitality staff getting agitated, food poisening, pushing the rental and cost of living. Restrict the daily arrivals with declaration how much to spend.
I'm surprised that many people can afford to spend so much money on traveling ! I get pissed off just from looking at hotel prices, fees, rates, fares, tariffs, etc. etc. etc.

Great reporting every time.
Cruise Ships cant stop even if there is reduction of tourists, because they are usually pre-scheduled. But yes the number of schedules may be high now and could be reduced. But that may not happen immediately, as otherwise ships get into huge losses.
Uttarakhand is suffering from the same problem 😐 It is taking a big toll on the environment. Deforestation is rampant to make more space for the increasing number of tourists.

If a country wants to reduce or stop tourists travelling then don't authorize visas and reduce incoming flights from other countries just like during the pandemic... whats the issue ?!

I’ve been to popular sites in Italy and in India; the main difference is that the overcrowding in Italy is literally all tourists (there are only a couple thousand native Venetians, for example), but in India, the crowds are vastly, by a huge margin, predominantly Indian. The only exception was Goa, but it wasn’t really crowded.
straight up clown world.

Palki you are a graceful lady.
Limiting the number of tourists sounds like a good idea, some countries tourism tax wouldn't cover the amount of maintenance and repairs that the cities have to cover!
I went to Udaipur just before covid and the crowds at the palace were unbelievable, I don't want to think of how it is now.
Come to Zimbabwe, mother nature is at her most original there and she will let you take as many selfies as you want❤

I wish palki took up the issue of over tourism in the hills of our own country. Once pristine untouched hills are now garbage landfills, water n soft drink bottles everywhere, empty food packets and just about everything that can be thrown is thrown. On top of that the stress on the fragile infrastructure is so heavy that the local civic bodies cannot cope. The impact of recent flooding in Manali, uttrakhand and Ladakh was a result of unplanned town planning arising out of greed to build hotels, restaurants, cafe and other tourist attractions on every inch of the land available.
No time to wash laundry by hotels 🤣
I couldn't understand a lot of what she was saying and had to use subtitles. Anyway the Netherlands can stop tourists from entering, but it should be reciprocated to them. They shouldn't be allowed in other countries, especially work visas, etc.
very interesting take; i understand why amsterdam has to prevent any excess of tourism (:
I m loving it...over crowded, overtourism.
Sometime in the late 1980s when a debate was raging about promoting tourism in the Andaman and Nicobar islands some environmentalists questioned the short sightedness of promoting tourism in those unspoiled locales. It was felt that the potable water resources of these islands would be put under strain. The waste water would end up in the sea unless water treatment plants are established at huge costs. The tourists will need some activities to do after landing there. Palki Sharma has only put it mildly as “taking selfies”. But the greater danger is mushrooming sex tourism alcoholism and drugs.
I never did think of this
am sure, there are many more tourism locations and places unexplored in India. Let's give boost to our own economy before to others
Many tourists also settle illegally
Same with Badrinath , Kedarnath and other hilly areas. Cover that as well.
