    the story of making Massive higher than Elbert came from Alpine Club members and enthusiasts in the 70's (I was around during this time and recall the controversy). These seasoned mountaineers felt that Elbert didn't convey the toughness and technicality of what they thought Colorado's highest peak should be and Massive was a better representative of their ideal so they stacked rocks on the summit to cover the several foot difference, yet Elbert supporters were like, "ah, no" and tore the tower down. I guess there was a bit of back and forth over a few years before everybody was like, wth are we doing and let Elbert have the title. glad you said that about glissading, more than a few noobs have started glissading without experience and end up tomahawking into big time injury or worse. great job on another vid!

      Ahh that’s for the background, I thought that was the story - missed a few key details! Thanks for sharing Steve

    Thanks for a great video! My son, his wife and a friend just did Elbert on July 6th via Black Cloud. What stunning views. I really had hoped to get out there this year...but life interceded. I shall live vicariously through your work until then. Peace.

    Hey man, I’ve been following your channel for about 6 years now. When I found you I didn’t really hike a lot. Fast forward to now, I have worked for CFI on Mount Wilson, climb(strong 5.11 leader/WI4-5), and back country ski. What I’m getting to is that you had a huge part in my inspiration during my early days! Love this channel. Just wanted to say thank you. 🙏

    I just hiked that trail on Friday. The first 1/2" of the hike, below tree line, almost felt flat...and then the hike up to the peak, once you get above treeline, didn't seem particularly steep either. I was surprised by the elevation gain was over 4000ft. The next day, however, I did Belford and Oxford and man....talk about steep. Kinda made up for the lackluster experience on Massive.

    Hiked Massive 3x last year, one of which was a full loop from North Halfmoon, up the Southwest Slopes, down the standard route, and then back up to my truck at NHM. The standard route was long and boring IMO, but I totally see how it's a great option for a long but easier "intro" 14er. I love that you are refreshing all your videos on the "intro" hikes that might encourage more folks to get out and enjoy the mountains.

      @@TheVirtualSherpa Looks like Aria was on her best behavior, too. I was curious about the snow but it looks like it mostly melted from the trail. A few weeks ago somebody slipped and slid down like 600’. 😬Even less snow this morning than last week.

    These shots with you and Aria on the top will never get old. Looked like a beautiful day, sad the storm rolled in.
    Do you have any special plans on what you want to cover this year? Any other 14ers you're going to revisit?

    Couple of good campsites around the Frying Pan Lakes, under the west flank. Decent fly fishing. Marmots enjoy prowling around in occupied sleeping bags, too. Bad for those prone to wet dreams, though I feel sure the marmots enjoy themselves.

    I was wondering if you could make a video that breaks down how much the total cost time/$ to do all the Colorado 14ers.

    • @TheVirtualSherpa

      That is a great question, but I truly have no idea. I would say at minimum you are investing in: good pair of footwear, backpack, food/water, basic non-cotton layers and gas to get to each TH and that would be bare essentials. Ideally you would have a first aid kit, phone for tracking/following routes and prob camping gear to make the nights easier before. Time wise would depend on where you live and how ambitious you want to get with each trip.

    7:27 Gotta point out that Mt Whitney in Cali is the tallest in the lower 48, its like 60 ft taller than Elbert :)
    Also i'm curious, have you got all the lower 48 14ers? Do you plan to work towards the Alaskan peaks?

    • @TheVirtualSherpa
      @TheVirtualSherpa  13 днів тому

      Touche no idea how I had a brain fart with that. No real goal for all the 14ers, more focused on doing what I want / enjoy

    My dog does “the sniffs” also whilst hiking, albeit he always stops and has to take it in thoroughly. Can’t seem to break him from it, so the hike takes longer. I liked the hat and was wondering if you can get one if you make a donation? I’m afraid I live too far away to volunteer. Thanks!
