Just look at Adam Ragusa's video on videla onions, get rid of the sulphur in the soil and it can't produce the enzyme! Then again any method to get onion to bring tears is great (unless it's a case of cataracts)
Covering your tongue with a spoon definitely works. Has to be the right size spoon and keep it covering the taste buds the whole time. I use this technique nearly every time i cut onions.
