Neither one taught the other, we travelled Australia as a band in the 60s with Tommy on rhythm, Phil on the lead guitar, brother Chris on the drums and Virginia on the Steel guitar. the were first named the Emmanuel Quartette, then The Midget Surfaris, and formed another band in Parkes NSW called the Trail Blazers. I am Virginia
It's a pleasure and an honour to meet you here of all places. I don't know if you have your own copy of this, but someone uploaded Tommy's episode of This Is Your Life, and it's great to see you all together again: ua-cam.com/video/j_gWl2n8nEg/v-deo.html
I always thought that Phil Emanuel was the better guitarist as an Aussie who 1st saw em play Duelling Banjo's on TV as a kids act. Saw Goldrush & The Emanuel Brothers multiple times. In my opinion Phil was always the better guitarist as I saw The Emanuel Brothers & Goldrush multiple times as a kid in concert in OZtralia. Love em! Vale Phil Emanuel RIP mate
I used to go and watch the Emmanuel brothers Wizz band (Tommy & Phil) in the 1980s atround Sydney. The first time that I was then was around 1984 at the Horden Pavilion. They cam out and said in unision, "Hie We are the Emanuel Brothers and we are going to play our arses off". And just like that, I was hooked.
Saw em do this as kids on Countdown on old Aussie TV. Loved Goldrush & The Emanuel Brothers saw em play many times together growing up. RIP Vale Phil Emmanuel
I discovered Tommy about 10 years ago. I was literally shocked that I had never heard of or seen him before. And now , just a few days ago I learned about Phil and realized I've missed so much. I always threw Tommy's name in the polls for goat guitarist. Recently I discovered Andy Mckee and now released there's no answer to the question. I recall hearing Glen Campbell in an interview one time when asked if he felt like his extreme talent on guitar h ad been the key to his success in Nashville. He replied that absolutely mind blowing guitarist were a dime a dozen in Nashville and luck probably had more to do with it!
I remember watching Tommy Emmanuel and this brother Phil in the beer garden of our local pub in Australia some time way back in the early to mid-1970’s.
Back in '74 I bought a Guild F-50 custom. I was working on the door of the Texas Tavern in Kings Cross and Tommy was a frequent late-night visitor. That Friday night he strolled in with his guitar case and I pulled out the new Guild. We played 'Duelling banjos; with me on his Maton and him on my shiny brand-new Guild. He still wants it!
That was a classic video. That is a big part of what music is about. I am so far removed from my guitar but this might inspire me to find it, find my rockman and a mike and our stereo and do a bit of low budget recording until I can get a Strat.
nothing like brothers working together, funny stuff and both great players. My only beef is the fact that Phil's tone sounds like he's playing through a pair of $10 Radio Shack headphones... But still creative and fun to watch.
Thankyou Wolfy62490 ( I have a lovely Belgium Barge dog called 'wolfy') but it's short for Wolfgang Armadaeus Mozart of course because I believe Tommy is like him in many ways.... I saw the movie and couldn't believe the likeness in personality and talent. Goog 48
saw them in their band goldrush at the prospect, doing the full version of deliverance, 2 guitars plus banjo, the most awesome sound and musicianship..
not only does Tommy have a brother that is excellent, there is a son or nephew out there too, I belive his name is Charlie, but I can not find a link , wish I could , he is a special kid, now in his late teens, or even 20's
Not only can the boys play hot shit guitar,,,,But Tommy said his mother was a singer. Ok I'll bet $1 million that the lady sounded great! Never hear her but still it's got to be true. I love these guys. Tommy is the flattop austic guitar God IMO.
I Like very much some of Tommy's compositions and his style but don't get the Aussie childlike banter in this Video , interesting that i always wondered what it would be like seeing Tommy play Auto Harp then i saw this video and now i Know.

I love your brothers to death! I miss Phil and listen to Tommy often. Thank you guys for everything

Rip Phil Emmanuel. You will be forever missed.

Two of the most talented and entertaining musicians that I've EVER seen(and that's 80 years worth0
So sad to hear of Phil passing R.I.P. We have lost a brilliant musician, entertainer, father & family man
i have never had the chanceto hear all of you as a family but your two brothers are the best i've ever heard how can one family have so much talent
'
No One in the world can play the PinkPanther theme better than Phil Emmanual,he is legend.
He was the better guitarist in my opinion & probably why Phil always did the lead parts when playing together.
Phil's tone when he plays Pink Panther is freaking orgasmic.

Theses guys are so talented but the Aussie humour is just wonderful, Keep her rocking lads
Phil looks like Eddie Van Halen with medium short hair. These brothers play well together. No pun intended...lol!
Absolutely ace! This is the youngest of Tommy that I've seen; and I'm new to Phil. Brilliant!

I remember watching Tommy Emmanuel and this brother Phil in the beer garden of our local pub in Australia some time way back in the early to mid-1970’s.
Tommy Emmanuel is the most fantastic rhythm guitar player I've seen... not even speaking of all the other things he does.
"We will do a hit single singing along with some machines.."
I nearly wet my pants :D
Both brothers are awesome. Saw Tommy last year and looking forward to seeing he and his brother play in May! :)
I just saw Tommy and Phil in concert (without mullets). They were amazing! I love love love them!!
I love their act. It's just so entertaining.
amazing,, there both so extremely good,, never knew he had a brother,, they do look like each other!
This is great. Miss Jeff Healey. Another wonderful guitarist who died much too early.
Watched Phil for couple of hours at Tamworth one year - absolutely the best

That Friday night he strolled in with his guitar case and I pulled out the new Guild. We played 'Duelling banjos; with me on his Maton and him on my shiny brand-new Guild. He still wants it!
I acquired a Guild S100 around that time supposedly ex-Little River band. I've still got the fucker!
Even their playful licks are amazing
Hoo, Phil is a serious guitar shredder, nice. They are both great.
That was a classic video. That is a big part of what music is about. I am so far removed from my guitar but this might inspire me to find it, find my rockman and a mike and our stereo and do a bit of low budget recording until I can get a Strat.
::::: Bloody brilliant... what a brotherly talent... :::::
such genius with brotherly hilarity ,just freekin awesome
Can't believe these guys didn't hit huge....funny as hell and brilliant players.
nothing like brothers working together, funny stuff and both great players. My only beef is the fact that Phil's tone sounds like he's playing through a pair of $10 Radio Shack headphones... But still creative and fun to watch.

not only does Tommy have a brother that is excellent, there is a son or nephew out there too, I belive his name is Charlie, but I can not find a link , wish I could , he is a special kid, now in his late teens, or even 20's
Respect
@DanskeSange At a guess he's mainly using the neck pickup and has gotten himself a nice pedal with an echo effect.
Brilliant thanks
that BOSE shirt is BOSS
I'd prefer to listen to Phil anyday
Imagine the awesomeness if the Emmanuel's made a band with the Wootens?
Super Zeug!
Phil and Tommy learned 'by ear' and to this day neither one can read music..... and thankyou Applejack 2000 for your response, Virginia
