Just after Perestroika, in Russia, in the early 90s I met a man named Michael Brook who ran a climbing gear shop in the city of Sverdlovsk, in the inside of a vast stone water tower. He looked as Irish as ever there was, what with black curly hair and the bright blue Celtic eyes, but not a word of any language other than Russian could he speak. It felt natural to address him only in English or a Celtic tongue. Through an interpreter he told us his forefathers were Irish nobility who had sought refuge in Russia long ago - yet the body language, the lot was still there.
Plus che Guevara had irish ancestry, his 4× great grandfather was called patrick lynch from Athenry Co.galway, him and his descendants done fairly well for themselves, mostly
The Irish government gave a loan to revolutionary Russia in the 1920s(before we had won independence from Britain). As collateral for the loan the Russian government gave us their crown jewels. They were kept in ireland until the 1940s. Eventually they were given back to Russia.
I don't think it was the complete set of crown jewels. More like a low-end taster from the imperial collection. The Soviets either welshed on the loan, or, more likely, just forgot about it in the chaos of the next couple of decades. The Irish government sent the jewels to Christies in London for evaluation in the 1940s and were told they were worth only a fraction of the loan value. However, the Soviets then coughed up the loan and the jewels were returned.
@@Dabhach1 Thank you for the info. To my knowledge there were 4 items. A cluster that may have been part of a crown. A pendant and earrings. It belonged to the now deceased Romanovs. It was a fascinating time, when countries were striking out for independence.
As an Irishman I am very proud of our contributions to Russia but it doesn't stop there. When nobody would give a loan to the Russian revolution we offered Russia a loan in which they gave us some of the Russian Crown Jewels. The jewels were returned when the loan was paid back many years later. The loan was for £20,000 not a small sum in its day considering the Jewels were valued at £1,600.
It was the royal jewelry of Cathrine The Great herald in Dublin Castle. The funny thing is we got loads of money from the Irish diaspora in the USA. They gave us money to fight our independence war and we had too much money for our own good and bought allies with it.
How is the relevant, really. The Normans became more Irish than the Irish, but if you want to go down that road... most of the English aristocracy, landowners and kings and queens are of French blood, let's go back even further where we are all Descendants from Africans.
