Let's Build an Action Adventure RPG in Game Builder Garage | The Legend of Alice - Part 1

Today we start the journey to building out an action adventure rpg game in Game Builder Garage. In this episode/part we start to build out our player character by creating his companion Bob and adding in the basic attack function of the powerful Destroy Sword. We get into the programming after setting out some simple scope and story goals that will guide us through the project.

To prevent things from getting out of hand I've divided the adventure into 4 tentative parts as of now.
1. Intro Area
2. Overworld
3. Dungeon / Temple
4. Finale / Boss
I don't have big list of planned features because I don't want this to be a sad E3 trailer situation where I end up not being able to deliver. In the next episode we can add some more player abilities, and start to plan and build out the intro level. The goal there will be to incrementally have the player acquire the basic set of abilities and learn to use them before going into the overworld and tackling some quests.

Thank you for the support everyone! I see the comments to incorporate the nodon identity more in the related weapons abilities, I had planned on doing that to a few, but keeping it consistent for all of them does sound like a good idea 🤔 maybe we can rectify this in part 2!

I have 2 ideas that might make bob look better. You can use a blue texture to get rid of the ugly lines on the ball, and maybe you can use a flat texture of a lighter blue circle, that is in the center of the blue ball, that always faces the camera and is just a little bit bigger, to recreate the outline they normally have

Quick two suggestions:
-The timer for the textures of the trail doesn't need that counter, u can use the timer settings to hold the value for also 0.25 and connect the NOT directly from the timer.
-The counter for the attack(the one the flag activates), can be setted to range and set the number to 25, so u use the flag to count down and when it reaches 0 u use a NOT to activate both the animations and the reset

bruh. that was a beautiful nodon mess. I approve.
interestingly I just connected the two textures to the launch nodon without adding the timer to swap between them and discovered that for some reason the launch nodon appears to alternate between the two anyway whenever an object is launched.
I was curious so I played around with it and may have discovered a bug with the launch object nodon. it seems that if you create texture A and then create texture B if you connect up A first and then B it will alternate seamlessly on its own for some reason. but if you connect B up first and then A that won't happen instead it will only show texture A.
furthermore if you create a texture C and hook that up, B will be ignored entirely and A and C will alternate instead. at first I thought It was creating a queue starting with the last object it was given ironically enough, but only later found out that the objects its given must be connected in order by the time they were created (i.e. oldest first, newest second) or else it won't alternate at all. (all of this is on current patch by the way i just double checked)
That's an awesome find! I hadn't even checked to see if that was a possibility.
@@DaveNodon upon further testing I found this bug only happens with the launcher set to Box shape, and only with the (1) launcher not (10) or (100) as far as I can tell. Its such an oddly specific set up, if it weren't for this tutorial I almost certainly wouldn't have found it.

So I was so inspired that I’m making a sequel (or spiritual successor) to your game. I’ve run into a wall though. See I also want the person to be stationary when attacking but I need its action to be “while pressed”. Problem is that it’s spamming the animation instead of holding it. Any idea how to troubleshoot this issue? I’m like you where I don’t usually make a full game. This is mostly due to my lack of programming savy but this time I’m going all in, and I really want to do this project justice. Btw it’s called TLOA Bob of the Wild (lol)

As for the whole press button problem. I don’t really know, because a sustained input should just make him hold the animation. It might be the cool down, maybe it’s firing off constantly? Try to locate where the rapid signal is coming from and why it’s firing that way instead of being constant
Thanks! 😁 Alright I appreciate the advice. I’m not sure if my big brain will be able to figure it out but I’ll give it another shot. I don’t wanna give away too much but I’m also using the purple person and I have Alice as my following guide instead. I’m also using one melee and one ranged weapon however they are different from your game. Can’t wait to show it off and I’m looking forward to seeing more of yours, especially the boss battle!😈

What is a String connector?
In GBG there is a nodon in the connectors tab called String connector. It creates a kind of rope like physics object that links two things together
i couldn't get the camera to work
I tried to make the sword bc I couldn't find a video I didn't add a sheith I don't want one but the block you use for the sword won't go away like when I walk into the enemy they die even If I don't press the attack vutton
Yeah, using this method, you need to manage when the Sword is "attacking" using logic. Like a button press + detect sword equals damage. Using a teleport to bring the sword in when you attack would make that different, might switch to that method down the road.

How does the sword deal damage
There is a touch sensor detecting the fancy object that the sword is made from. When it detects the sword AND you are pressing the attack button, I can use that output to deal damage.
Thinking of changing how it works on the back end so that the sword teleports in, it would all look the same but if an enemy only had to detect the presence of the sword and not two things, I might be able to save nodon usage for other things.

If you mean the camera settings. I just use a simple camera attached the player with a Z position of something like -3 or -5. To give it more of an over the head look and to prevent so much floor clipping i might adjust it later on.

I meant that how it is now, I need a bunch of logic on sword-destroyable objects because the sword object is technically always In front of the player. IF I only teleport the sword in when I attack I can reduce the amount of nodon I use in every "attackable" object in the game. I think for the overworld which is the next level I build, I'll need to use that method so I can keep every possible nodon free for making the big environment.
