Tesla have been building up towards an autonomous car future for many years now, they have been steadily getting all their ducks in a row and this is just another example of forward thinking and planning to help with the “smart” car future we will all have the benefit of in the not so distant future.
Thanks Will for the compact and excellent analysis! This makes a ton of sense now, I was a bit perplexed from previous information. It looks like this can be a great solution for light cleaning/disinfecting and then if sensors collectively detect heavier mess (food, spilled drinks, etc) it can get itself to an automated cleaning station and be on its way without human interaction. I would wager a bet some of it has already made it into physical prototypes and we might see it on 8/8 (or 8/8 as Brian would say for non-Americans 😀)
UV lamp(s) inside to kill any viruses? Would need to be tightly controlled and not able to be switched on by anyone inside while occupied otherwise a lot of people are going to get some serious tans

So, more chemicals on top of rubbish? How about, if ghe ozonator (ref. UV light) or cabin ventilation fails and cabin is full of O3? Ozonator usually require a minimum of four hours off-gassing time. Active heating of electronics like touch screens increases severe heat cycles and thus breaks the components much faster. So, increases maintenance costs. Having filed some patents and even granted some patents, I can say that the benefits are usually more like wish list than actually measured benefits. I.e. targets.

Just this morning I've read of Spain and the US with massively 'more' solar power coming on line than they know what to do with -- maybe free (abundant) electricity isn't insane either.

At lunch one day in a nice Greek restaurant, I asked him how much he made off of it. His response was that he made enough in a month to pay for half the lunch.

As a further update, I have now had my Tesla Model 3 RWD for just under 3 months, went to Nottingham at the weekend and stayed at New Inn, parking in the last space of their car park. Whilst I was out, my alarm was activated and due to lack of phone signal I was unable to view anything. Next morning I found my front offside was damaged with the bumper pulled away and a hole punched through it. Reviewing sentry mode it was a Range Rover Evoque, that had decided to park next to me, reversed in as I was. It then drove off and hit my Tesla setting off the alarm and also damaging their rear nearside door and wheel arch. It then reversed back before driving off and out of the car park. If I had not had a Tesla I would not have known how it happened or who had done the damage. Thankfully a nice clear image of the number plate. My Tesla was drivable, but upon showing my insurance company the photos, they told me it should not be driven as parts sticking out and could cause injury. So now in a 2 yr old M3 LR. I do miss my premium connectivity and it is annoying not being able to use my profile in the car. It is amazing how much bumpier and noisier it is than my new one. Insurance company can't find a repairer so I am now hoping one of the Tesla approved ones can do it, that is nearby.

I could also see a robot arm at a 'cleaning station' using a 'ultraviolet strobe lite head' or device like the room sanitizing devices some hospitals have that can sanitize a room in a few seconds (if it is without occupants) with extra strong ultraviolet light.
The idea sounds overly complicated, expensive, and stupid for multiple reasons. For the risk of mold growth for repeated steam sessions, damage to electronic components from humidity, possible melting of some foods into the car interior, off gassing from ozone and UV, risk of damage to riders if UV activates accidently, the complexity of needing to drive to manned cleaning station, etc. You're better off just have a person permanently ride in the vehicle and clean up as necessary after each ride. Better yet you could save money on self driving technology if they also drove the car too. I wonder what this type of service could be?
