Jan Hammer, best guitarist among the keyboard players ever!
and a great drummer, too!
Trey Azagthoth has a few words for you.
Beck and Hammer did some insane albums together!
Hammer, Lukather, Philipps and Beck, some of the best ever! But I miss the rest of the gig on this clip... Give us more, Jan!
RIP Jeff , thanks for the memories
R.i.P. Jeff Beck. The greatest.
Never has a dentist looked so cool on stage. Or rocked a solo so hard. The 5/12 arpeggio polyrhythm over Simon’s half time time shuffle at 1:21 is magic!
I was gonna say that! 🤪
I would never hear that. I would just think it sounds cool.
@@LetzBeaFranque I'm thinking that's how they hear it too -- stuff that sounds cool is deciphered by technicians and explained, but those guys just feel it.
Does it get any better that Hammer and Beck together? Musicianship on an entirely different level.
They made some of the best albums together Ever.
This is about as best as it gets. That's my opinion. But check the Japanese fusion players. Hiromi is an ace and so is Casiopea. And the Little Drummer Girl, Senri.
@@MarttiSuomivuori Check out Mats Morgan band and their rendition of the chicken.
Try some De Lucia - De la isla, next level.
Only 2 words can describe this "KEY' TAR"
Or remote keyboard :-)
Can't overlook all the great tracks he created for Miami Vice.
Love me some key-tar!
Unbelievable solo from Hammer !
I believe he was the world’s best keyboard player in the 70s when he played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but this is pretty damn good still.
Today’s best keyboard player is by far Cory Henry (if you don’t know him yet check him out!)
one of the best but I think Keith Emerson was the greatest rock keyboard player. Obviously opinions vary.
Jan is still rocking; check out his latest albums, he hasn't given up the title yet~
I just bought this show w/Beck's group, Santana's & Lukather-! I think I'll see the entire thing!
Jan Hammer has one of the best guitar tones on the Moog!
Just one word...¡¡¡ YEAH....
Love Jan Hammer
best guitarist ever, but why'd I keep getting Spinal Tap flashbacks during this one :D
Rest in peace my brother
simply The Best
Magnificent ! Friendships JAN Hammer ! ( D.D.French drummer , have played w ith Rhoda Scott (organ, Etienne M"Bappe (bass) Guy N'Sangue (bass ith Jean Luc Ponty ) Thierry Mineau bass (Billy Cobham in his album) à and others Artists !
Jan Hammer listed as Jeff Becks favorite guitarist.
This sounds more like a Van Halen guitar solo than a keyboard solo, with all the pitch bends and arpeggios.
Jan doesn't play guitar.
@@gogoyubari366 , actually, Jan *does* play guitar, he certainly did when composing for Miami Vice. Plays drums too...
John McLaughlin is Jeff's favourite living guitarist with Django being his choice for best ever.
@@TheHumbuckerboy Cliff Gallup is another one of JEFF'S favourites.
Great performance! Hammer, Beck and Phillips = the ideal combo
I wish that neither the beginning nor end had been cut out of the video.
Perhaps that was done for copyright reasons?
It's sped up and played just a bit too fast for my taste; but yes, I hate it when videos aren't full length.
The same combo at San Diego State University California
Awesome, but Tal is the best bassist for Jeff. Those two just sounded so amazing together!
Is the size of the crowd filling the street as far as the street can be seen, an indication of the size of the market now all grown up, in Japan., does one imagine that they are ready for as many shipments as can be assembled of aluminum foil wizard caps, with glow in the dark propellers with nanoparticle dispersal capability. That the reincarnation of jazz fusion may this time over run the entire planet all together at the same time completely both once and for good and all.
あれ、ルカサーも?
You gotta be as good as Jan Hammer to pull off the keyboardonnastrap 'cause MANY musician's live playing falls apart (not that most crowds care) when they start strikin' the pose (Jimmy Page)... rather than naturally ridin' the wave of the music (ala J.H. here) and focus on playing well.
Edgar Winter was the first or among the first to put straps on a Minimoog back when he was doing songs like 'Frankenstein'.
@@modularmuse , There's a live performance of "Frankenstein" on UA-cam somewhere, and its awesome!. Edgar takes a turn on the percussion too.
@@goodun2974 Right, I've seen it, great performance. Edgar on keys, then saxophone, then timbales! What a virtuoso. He actually won the Playboy Reader's Poll for best jazz woodwinds back in the day.

Excellent, thank you for sharing.
I thought that looked like a slightly-overfed Lukather...
yamaha should make keytars again
Put up only your own solo why doncha lol!!
That yellow shirt doesn't exactly scream rock and roll.
Look like an accountant, play like a guitar god - better than vice versa. 🙂
Jan always went his own way
i went to this live when i was teenager. this live is best in my whole life. bass drum and bass sound was like earth quake. guitar and keyboard made me tinnitus. santana band started from 1pm. after that sound change for jeff beck. jeffs band play and joint other two guitarist to 5 pm. wonderful super musicians live but, ticket price was only 7500 japanese YEN, it's about 56 us dollars!although these songs are about 1 hour in video, but they played many other songs...
Holy smokes - Lukather, Hammer, Phillips, Wimbish and Beck? How did I miss this? And why did I never realize JB was Nigel Tufnel???
What an amazing duo Jan & Jeff..2 gifted greats!!
Just beautiful, I can only thank them for allowing me to listen...
So nice!
Looks like half of Tokyo was in attendance - and digging it!
Hammer nailed it.
Jan Hammer best modern day keyboardist ever. From Czech Republic i think!😄
yes! :D
RIP…. Mr. Beck 😢…. You left a lasting effect on all of us !
Wow what a line up! like a super group in itself!
Jeff is gone now. Jan and others are soon to follow. We pray their heartstrings were strummed by GOD that their gifts were not in vain.
Sorry, Jan, looking cool is impossible while playing that. Neither Eddie Van Halen, nor Trey Azagthoth could pull that off, either.
This is great! Intense. They all look like horses biting at the bit to open it up on the field or dogs waiting for the ball to fetch next. Sharing. And then, release! Incredible.
Lukather talks about how it was so loud on stage that he had to jump over the monitor. Also I think between the studio session headphones and this gig, he developed tinnitus.
Did I just see jan hammer eyes roll in the back of his head 😳 lol 😆
Masters!
Jeff beck ! bom demais !
I remember the first time my mate played me Jeff Beck & Jan Hammer Group live (Japan) in the late late 70's. My jaw hit the floor, I couldn't believe the virtuosity & the jazziness. Still love it to this day. For mine Jeff Beck is the best electric guitarist ever.
Saw that lineup in Melbourne in 1977 - took my head off. Hard at it .. funky grooves with truckloads of tasteful virtuosity - and took guitar to a new place. Top 10 live acts for me.
Lukather looks like he is having the time of his life.
Luke Jan Jeff 🎶🎶💥☮️
popopo du grand spectale jef beck très grand guitariste et jam hammer j'adore compositeur en partie de la BO 2 flic a miami énorme
I read somewhere (I can’t remember where anymore) that Hammer was considered the best keyboardist in the world regarding the use of pitch bend. When you watch him playing you understand why.
Chris Poland was heavily influenced by Jan. You can certainly hear the similarities in style of their solos.
What a lineup. I saw them in 1978, sans Lukather. Still a strong memory.
ライブでのジェフベックはよく動くね!
ヤン・ハマーは半世紀たっても外見が余り変わっていないのがすごい。
Ohh wow. Thankyou😻☮️ overflowing w/bright magic
Not a huge fan of Neil D Tyson these days but can't deny the man's got chops on bass.
Jan was a better soloist in the 70's, listen to his brilliant work from that decade
Oh yeah?
His solos have only gotten better~ check out "Miami Night", "Electric Storm" and "First Light" ~ all from his latest albums~
@@MidiArchives well, for me his soloing peak was on his albums The First Seven Days, Oh Yeah and Like Children. He literally sounded like an alien from another planet. And nobody could do what he did with the pitch wheel, his bending is unbelievable. Just my opinion, but later on he tried to sound too much like a guitar and lost a little something. He was still great of course, but I like his original minimoog playing a little more. Great discussion, thanks!
ヤン・ハマーって黒人じゃねーのかよってあの頃本気で言ってた。マハビシュヌにいてな。
SAW JAN AND JEFF IN IOWA IN 1976 ? WOW. I'M STILL VIBRATING.
Killer-!!
Doesn’t hurt to have Steve on guitar either.
Steve Lucasar seems comfortable to be with Jeff.
Tal has an alibi. She wasn't born yet!
That's me right there in the middle 🎉
Keytarific!
2:00 that divebomb tho
Great stuff
Doug Wimbish!! What a band!! Why aren't shows these great anymore? How about a Beck and Billy Squire show?!
Doug is so young here, he reminds me of a young George Benson. My wife and I saw him play and jam with several different bands at Tab Benoit's Voice of the Wetlands festival in Louisiana back in 2018 (his main gig was with Eric McFarland). He was on the same planes as us, heading home after the show, and we got to talk with him for a bit in the airport. A wildman onstage, but soft-spoken, gracious and generous in person; he works with kids in the musical education programs in local schools.
@@goodun2974 Thank you for the update! Such lucky kids. I still absolutely love Living Colour.
My GAYDAR is going off a little bit.
Yeah they should all be cocained
Yep, im also getting a heavy, aristocratic gay feel from your name as well.
Lukather... a bit of cringe factor going on..
Lukather should not be on this stage
Why Beck can't have his dealer in Japan?
At least this time, Lukather understands to just play his 5th chords.
@@DidierMartini please...
Wish I was there. Everyone is having so much fun up there.
