He's got to be playing in a low ass tuning. The 5th fret playing standard setting on a 6 string should not sound that heavy on a breakdown riff. The clarity in his tone with those chords is sweet too.
Yeah he drops his lowest string down to A I think \m/
He's tuned to D standard with the low E (or D) dropped to A. Mastodon uses it quite a bit. I have this song about 60% figured out and Igneous about 40%. Nick comes up with some killer riffs.

Dude looks like Guthrie Govan's metal head brother with less beard. Also for your guitarists watching this, try to find a Vigier guitar to play. They have a completely flat fretboard that is absolutely amazing to play on!
Nitpick: why could Nick not have gotten a backing track of his own song without the lead parts??

I'm not a gear junkie buy im obsessed with this guy's tone! Does anyone know what amp he uses ?
He uses a vintage Hiwatt, which is actually just super loud and clean. A lot of his gritty tones come from various drive/distortion pedals. Hit him up, he'll be happy to tell you exactly what he's using!
