  • Elizabeth Siddal is best known as the model for Millais' iconic painting 'Ophelia'.
She became the most famous Pre-Raphaelite muse and posed for Victorian artists including Rossetti who she had a stormy nine year relationship with. In this video I've looked at Siddal's own story and artistic talents. I visited the exact spot on the beautiful Hogsmill River, on the edge of London, where Millais painted 'Ophelia'. As well as being a Pre-Raphaelite model and muse, Elizabeth Siddal was an artist in her own right. As a women artist in Victorian England she didn't achieve the fame of her male colleagues and her life was cut short when she tragically died aged 33 from a laudanum overdose.

There should be a full-length feature film about Lizzie Siddall. She was an artist in her own right

The closest to that that I know of is Ken Russell’s 1967 film “Dante’s Inferno” starring Judith Paris as Lizzie and Oliver Reed as her husband Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Even to this day Lizzie is a muse. Many visit her grave and some (mainly men I've read) cry.

Beautifully presented, thankyou. I also watched "Several Circles" contribution on the Preraphaelites which is also excellent however she features a photograph of Elisabeth which clearly is not her, the nose shape is the giveaway.

Ugh dude killed my girl by making her lie in the water for so long!!! He could've dead ass took a picture since photography was invented in 1826
But I loveeeee her and her work. I did a paper on her for my honors college English class and did very well. A 97%

Photography, especially at that time, could only maybe help with basic value groups, though most nuance would have been lost. Even with modern photography, you can't replicate scenes exactly as the human eye sees them, hence why painting from life is still a preferred method, if it's reasonable to do so. But there you have the pain of creation. If I'm not mistaken, Millais himself spent nearly 5 months by the stream's bank to produce the environment in the painting, in a discomfort comparable to torture as I can only imagine, saying that it "would be a greater punishment to a murderer than hanging."

It wasn't before 1850s that photography became the photography we associate with. In fact the film rolls are still nowhere that time.
She indeed got very sick because the candles went off and he was lost in drawing.
