The Lost World gets a lot of negative criticism. And I would probably agree with that criticism when it comes to the San Diego element at the end. But....In my opinion, The Lost World is still the second best movie in the Jurassic Park Franchise after Jurassic Park. It's thrilling, has a good cast (especially Pete Postlethwaithe as the big game hunter), and has a terrific musical score. RIP Eddie.

I kind of agree, there are some great set pieces in this movie but the overall story connecting them is lacking. Also, I had forgotten how many deaths Vince Vaughn’s character causes. He releases the captured dinosaurs, causing the initial rampage through the camp; he brings back the baby T-Rex, which gets Richard Schiff’s character killed; then he stops Roland from shooting the big T-Rex by sabotaging his elephant gun, leaving it free to continue its rampage, plus of course if Roland had killed it there would have been no San Diego escape. The man’s a plague…

Actually Mell, Spielberg has an interest in creating a sequel to the first movie. Originally, he wanted the sequel to revolve around the shaving cream that had the embryos in them but Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park 1990, created a sequel due to fans wanting one. Spielberg initially went to create an adaptation of The Lost World. Despite the sequel having its flaws, I consider it to be a solid one to its predecessor. It’s one of my favorite sequels of the franchise. I like that it is more different from the first movie. It has a darker tone to it. I recommend you read the books, Jurassic Park 1990 and The Lost World 1995. It’ll give you a full Jurassic experience and a new perspective to the films a little bit. Nice reaction.

@@joshuaortiz2031 i would agree. it seems that according to human history, people have a problem keeping big animals ALIVE.
elephants, rhino, 6 MILLION buffalo in North America during the wild west, tigers, white tigers, lions, polar bears.
These are all massive, dangerous animals to an unarmed man. But....they're also all at one point, on the endangered species list.
One of the reasons I find the first movie scarier is exactly this: you have unarmed scientists, trapped on an island with dangerous, unpredictable, and smart animals.
Being trapped with no way to defend yourself is a great recipe for a horror movie:

That said over time I did begin to see all the issues with the movie, mainly with the characters, they came off as self righteous, arrogant, sometimes stupid. Malcolm and Eddie were the two characters I liked, Eddie was a decent dude who probably wanted to run but didn't want to abandon his friends, so he stuck it out to the bitter end. Malcolm because he was the one who knew how things were going to go, but everybody brushed him off. Despite the issues, it's still my favorite and I still enjoy it.

I'm glad you were able to find some enjoyment from this film. It's not perfect, but Jurassic Park II is still a fun monster movie for me. The dinos are cool, the action is cool, the scene with the dog is NOT COOL, and while Jeff Goldblum was a decent lead, Pete Postlethwaite as Roland Tembo, the big game hunter in charge of the InGen party, is definitely best of the human characters. My favorite scenes are when the hunters are chasing after and capturing the herd of dinos in the field, the part where the T-Rexes rip Eddie (Richard Schiff) in half (RIP Eddie :( ), how everything snowballs from bad to insanely bonkers with the T-Rexes attacking the camp + the raptors attacking the hunters in the tall grass + the raptors chasing after Jeff Goldblum and co. in that abandoned village, and the Tyrannosaurus Buck going all Godzilla in San Diego (again minus that dog scene :( ).

Funny how most people see John Hammond as the villain, when in reality he’s merely an honest fool, like in the first film he simply wanted to bring true awe and wonder to the entire world (mostly children), but it ended in dire consequences. Wrong thing for the right reason type of deal.
In The Lost World, it’s his nephew Peter Ludlow who wants to bring the Dinos to the masses but for the wrong reasons ($$$), so now Hammond sent Ian and the small team to photograph and document the Dinos in their natural habitat for public support, so that they could have leverage against his nephew Ludlow.
Ludlow just wants the money, but Hammond just wants the Dinos to be left alone, and if they die out then they die out. Even the herbivores are from a different time where vegetation was a lot larger so they’re actually damaging the environment.

18:40 - 18:55 OH BOY! If that's how you feel, I'm REALLY excited to see your reaction to the end of JP Fallen Kingdom. That movie's characters make these characters seem like geniuses by comparison.
As for this movie, I can't lie, but this was a cult classic for me as a kid. I saw this before the first movie so this was my introduction to not just the Jurassic Park franchise, but dinosaurs in general. Idk what it is, but the dinos in this movie still look way better than most of the dinos shots in the new trilogy (probably because the newer films don't rely as much on animatronics). This movie has so many "individually" awesome parts. After rewatching it here though, I will admit it does seem like they just thought of all these cool set pieces but didn't give much thought to how our characters get into those situations in a reasonable and not forced way. Some examples are them taking the baby just for us to have 2 Trex attack the RV, the guy walking far away from the group to take a piss just so he can get attacked, or even the boat crew getting magically eaten so the Trex can escape (which apparently there was supposed to be a scene of raptors or something else getting on the boat and eating them, but it was cut for whatever reason). But I did here they did basically push/promise a lot of money to not just Speilberg, but the writer of the first book to make a sequel so that could explain the sloppy writing. As a whole movie, it doesn't always work, but at least it still has some really memorable moments and shots. Also just love how brutal and even scary at times this movie was (especially watching this as a kid). Eddies death in particular really stuck to me as a kid (he really didn't deserve to go like that though 😔).

Michael Crichton based the Velociraptors on Deinonychus which is basically just a bigger raptor. At the time Deinonychus was categorised under the umbrella name ‘Velociraptor’ so he used that because it sounds sexier. People always think it’s wrong when it wasn’t ha. There are now Utahraptors anyway which are even bigger than JP raptors.

Also, btw, the movies imply t-rex and other dinosaurs were dumb as shit. But I've read that in reality, t-rex is presumed to have been pretty intelligent. It's heads huge af, as was it's brain cavity. It's hypothesized a t-rex was as smart as a chimpanzee.

There are, of course, plenty of iffy plot points considering that this is a sequel that was only really brought about after the success of the first film. When a franchise isn't planned as a franchise at the start, there's always something. However, all things considered this is the second best film in the franchise, in my opinion, including the most recent ones. As for the lack of wonder and magic, we have to look at the context of the story. In the first film and book, the main characters were wary, but enthusiastic and curious, and the audience felt that too (because dinosaurs are awesome!). But when we get to The Lost World, the audience knows what to expect, and so does our main character. It's treated a little more as a horror/suspense than the previous film in that regard because at no point were any of us convinced that things would be okay.
