I did a Ranger build a while back and had the same issues I found out you should rotate top dead center on your engine and torque the rocker arms while you rotate and they will actually loosen up a bit each rotation and it fixed my issue I was just torquing them down
The info is a little off. The vulcan is the only 3.0 used since the 80's and they changed head bolt length and TTY bolts in the years you mentioned. They also switched to 7mm valve stems and conical springs. Other than the basic info this is a really great video so I don't mean to criticize, just correct.
Thank u for the video it's a big help got a 98 ranger sat in the yard for years got it running fairly decent got it road legal 9 hours later the head gasket blown out had it towed to the house I'm working on it after work and weekends
just do a good job inspecting everything once it's tore down like the cylinder walls, valve train, etc and make sure you know what block you have so you get the right head bolt torque specs
How many hours? Probly gonna do this since mine blew but only on the outside coolant side. Leaks pretty bad and i look at my temp guage more than the road. Every short trip i add water but it's getting old doing that. So yeah...how many hours about?
@@DaysofPainandVictory Thnx man. even with going back and doing it nice twice with a coupla guys sounds not too shabby. The rusty bolts are what concern me on my rig. I'm sure extractions are in my near future.
Oh lord, I just bought a used 1998 Ranger 3.0 V6 with 116,000 miles. The engine thankfully runs real quite with water in the oil and no white exhaust. Is bad head gaskets a problem with this engine ?
I have a 96 ranger 3.0 that developed a misfire and 0 compression on cylinder 1. I've let it sit the last 6 months because I have other vehicles to drive and I've just been too busy. Think I'm gonna pull the head off and have a look this weekend, wish me luck. Anything anyone would recommend looking for?
I had that happen to me when I was rebuilding a 3.0 for a coworkers ranger...😂 besides breaking head bolts. The 3.0 v6 seem to like spinning rod bearings...lol
I felt it like a punch in the gut when that bolt broke. Oof.
Yeah, that sucked haha

Thanks for the vid . Might be doing this exact same thing mine . Definite head gasket out. Bubbling out the reservoir.
You bet man, good luck!

good luck man, let me know if you have any questions, I'll do my best to help!
😂I remember snapping a bolt in the same manner when I first used a torque wrench. The cheap torque wrenches don’t have a very loud audible click.
Yeah it’s a heartbreaking moment for sure
Wow this helps a lot! Getting ready to do my ranger.
Good luck!
Doin one today, 3.0 been running on 4 cylinders for two years, anything I should look for that may be wrong

lol that Ranger was a drama QUEEN that's for sure.
Yeah, so much drama! He’s driving it now though so that’s great!

It’s was probably about 12-14 hours total

@@DaysofPainandVictory aye!
Will the kit you used in this video work with other years? Hoping to replace my 2002’s 3.0 head gasket
Looks like it fits late 98 through 2001

seems like it, but if you get em replaced should have another 100k problem free miles, just make sure to check for cracked heads
@@DaysofPainandVictory I meant no water in the oil. Everything is good. Just hope it stays that way.
@@MrPepper312 haha that's good, yeah bearings don't really like water!
if a head bolt broke off, how did you manage to take out what remained?
it actually came out really easy, it didn't break off flush with the block and with the pressure off we spun it out by hand
Noiiiiiiice.
I suppose the setup/procedure is similar for the 2.3?
its likely quite a bit different since the 2.3 is an inline 4 vs a v6. I would guess it's a bit easier to do the 2.3
@@DaysofPainandVictory agreed.
What's a good torque wrench I need to do this to my ranger
I’ve been happy with the craftsman wrench I bought, there’s a video about it on the channel
Do you have to do a valve adjustment or are the valves hydraulic?
no valve adjustment that I'm aware of, just torque to spec
@Days of Pain and Victory right on thanks man
What are the part numbers for the heads
I’m not sure, we had these rebuilt
38 losen 1 turn 22 90 and 90
Is this the case for the 2004 3.0 Vulcan as well?
@@jpb-go8qh99 and up that's the torque specs due to the longer head bolts
Blow out bolt holes before torquing
Pretty sure we did just didn’t show it on camera. Definitely a good point!

Pull the valve cover off and see if you’ve got any valve train issues

Whats that beeping noise
It’s probably the garage door sensor, I’ve taken it out since this video, it got real annoying
Lmao definitely don’t need to torque the head bolts 3 different times😊
Most head torquing protocols require 3 different torques in a sequence, what you can get away with and what’s in the book may be different
And again another person that skips the vacume lines smh
