The craziest thing about Speirs' run is that they actually made is shorter than it was in reality for the show, because the producers didn't think anyone would believe it if they showed it how it actually went down. It was like 5-10 times longer, and the officer Speirs linked up with got shot a few seconds after Speir started to run back. IT was truly a remarkable feat.

Went to the VA for my step dad to see about benefits. Gave the guy there his DD-214. He looked at it and shook his head in astonishment. 7 campaigns in Italy, France, Belgium and Germany, if memory serves. He was a rifleman in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He was a typical elderly man who at one time was a young lion in service to his country. RIP Dad.

@@Tony.795John Shiban was one of the showrunners on that. It's not surprising to me at all. That series had terrible flow and structure. Nothing against the actors - they all turned in great work with what they had. The structuring of the story they were trying to tell was shit. They could have cut that stupid subplot with the nav guy cheating with that English chick and put that time into the Red Tails. It was criminal how LITTLE that series gave those guys. And I was waiting, waiting, waiting for them to enter the show. I thought it'd be ep 4 or 5 but nah. Almost the damn end of the show to intro new characters then blow through the significance of that group. *take a deep breath*. Reel it back a bit. Sorry. It just pisses me off I waited YEARS for this show and they let John Shiban near to fumble around and fuck it up. Hell, Snipers for Secret Service had the shooter in their sights from their position. Law Enforcement and Secret Service were alert of Crooks being there 20 to 30 minutes prior to Trump's speech at the podium. Today, FBI confirmed that one of the bullets fired grazed Trump, but they didn't get into details of the bullet (if bullet or shattered glass hit Trump's ear).

Would love for you guys to watch Sharpe's Rifles (1993); a bit out-there maybe, as it's set during the Napoleonic wars. It's the show that made Sean Bean famous in the UK; he leads what is effectively a proto special forces detachment, and there's good stuff in it regarding conduct, leadership styles, enlisted men vs officers (Sharpe is field promoted to officer, but doesn't fit in as officers are typically of the nobility). I was blessed enough to meet several of these great men. They received no compensation from Ambrose or HBO for their stories while Ambrose was cashing checks every day
The Luger was well known for "just going off" in thr Greman Army. That's why most officers carried with an empty chamber. Like the nambo if hit on the side it could cause the shear to drop. This is why the Luger was being replaced by the Walter P38.

@ericsantucci6934 As there is with most things. The problem is Ambrose was a poor historian. He got _a lot_ wrong, whether it was with Blithe, Liebgot, or others, his research leaves a lot to be desired. As far as records are concerned, he was wounded in the shoulder during the assault. He also had several bronze stars from previous actions, suggesting he was not a coward. He was also filling several different positions outside of his command of Easy, which would explain why he was always missing.
Either way, Winters and Guarnere did not like him, so take the above for what you will. If Ambrose was a good historian, I would be more prone to believe the "froze" argument, wound or not.

The Pacific just didn't have that continuity of the same group of tight-knit guys through the whole show. But no one was at all the crucial battles in the Pacific, so telling such a story wasn't possible. The fighting in the Pacific was especially brutal and no-holds-barred, which gave that show a darker and more depressing feel, but again, that's just the way it was.

As someone who worked on it (it was filmed during the pandemic under restrictive SAG/AFTRA film conditions) I can attest to the attention to detail.
For example, all the glassware in the officers' mess was genuine 1930's/1940's glassware, and all of the bicycles were of the same vintage.
As for the military details, there was a dedicated team of top WW2 experts in B-17s and military behavior and structure (led by Capt Dale Dye) who worked tirelessly on it.

Buck you told of an Uncle Baker who was in Korea, Gerald. I have a second cousin she married a Baker who was in Korea, we called him Chuck. He was in a huge battle there, they were over run at night. He come home a double amputee, both legs and lost most of his fingers. He had bad frost bite but he claimed the deep cold was a good thing, it kept him from bleeding to death that night. He was a great guy, my grandmother, who would have been Aunt, loved Chuck and Edmay. They lived in California, San Bernardino. We visited, I was about 13 years old but he made a big impression. He was finally awarded medals for his duty and sacrifice, I was in my 30's at that time, not long afterwards Chuck went to God. He's on that island with my dad and uncles, my youngest daughter, 23 year old, brain tumor caused by an eye surgery, some have said an infection. They are laughing and having a great time. That's my religion. Your right about that, one minute their there and the next minute gone, like water through fingers, final baptism (water). The memories don't leave the living, it is shocking. So if anyone has experiences, love ones, friends and your needing a place to mentally put them, try my island. Its a great place big too, lots of room. You can add something to it too fit your person, Maine Lobsters, sail boats, suba diving, light house, big golf course with a massive club house, thats what I have there, its a beautiful place. It helps me a lot. My people are having a good time. Not missing this realm at all. Shooting at Ex Presidents, that's bad. I doubt one of them would like any of this. Some were Democrat, some Republican, none would like this. Its a better place.

I love Band of Brothers and The Pacific. I think the major difference between the two is that Band of Brothers follows a singular military unit from training camp to the end of the war, whereas The Pacific shows the experiences of three Marines. I think that’s why The Pacific feels kind of blocky and chunked up and Band of Brothers flows a little better.

On another note...New tv and now Sean and Kurt are orange...So...Is my other tv, where they're both pale correct...Or this one...?
@FNG Academy "They Shall Not Grow Old" (2018), have you/you guys seen/heard of it? It fits in with "Hornets Nest" and "Restrepo".
Not to give anything away, but the moment the transition happens in "They Shall Not Grow Old" it is powerful moment.
Tell Kurt we'll be waiting for his next show. Lmao...

Hey, long time viewer but don’t usually watch on an account. You guys should react to the documentaries:
-Royal Marines: Mission Afghanistan (on RM UA-cam channel)
-Ross Kemp - Return to Afghanistan or Ross Kemp: back on the frontline (following the British army in Afghan)
    - For a tv-show about the SAS ‘ultimate force’ would also be cool to see.

You are so right about a good or bad NCO making or breaking a team. I had to talk a fellow soldier out of machine gunning our bad squad leader once. He was just done with the shenanigans. You can definitely feel the difference when you are on a team with good leadership (NCO) and one with bad leadership (NCO). One thing I have learned though is that it is not always the fault of the NCO. The leadership training of first time leaders is horrible and often lacking or not even existing. And so the NCO will do what he thinks is the right way to lead based on what he has observed of his past NCOs. Anyway, good point you made about NCOs being the backbone. I could go on about leadership, but I do not think anyone is interested in me blathering on about it. LOL! Great reaction as always.

Regarding Speirs, I've done some research on WW2 battles, focusing on the Royal Hungarian Army and their frontline service on the Eastern Front. Officers were generally expected to "lead by example", but this often resulted in high casualty rates. Some battalions lost all their company commanders and most platoon commanders on the first day of the battle, leading to irreplacable losses.
Speirs' dash certainly looks good in the show, but you could not expect to have a long and healthy life if you tried to do that more than once :)

I don’t get why pacific is so under appreciated. IMO BOB is only seen in a better light because the pacific displays the true horror of war. The pacific shows how disgusting and vile humans can be in war while BOB emphasizes on the brotherhood within the 101st airborne.
