    Thank you so much for sharing such an authentic and honest side of reptile keeping. I'm sure most keepers have dealt with mites at one time or another, but few would be so transparent discussing it. Thanks for allowing yourself to be so vulnerable in order to educate us. Greatest appreciation 😊

    Diatomaceous earth works good outside of cages, if kept dry and out of the air. At least it does for non parasitic mites, but you need deep depth, not a light dust because they don't instantly die and dead mites act like a bridge for other mites to travel farther. Used motor old in cans/buckets on the legs of tables can prevent them from climbing up from the floor and will drown.

    A handheld steaming device is also really helpful to treat the surrounding areas and hard to reach spots as well 🙂 it simplifies the need to manage so many different chemicals and reduces the risk of exposure to the animals. Of course not on its own, but it is a tool in the toolbox of pest control that is cheap and effective. They’re like $10 at most big box stores

I was staying at home and was bored with a new baby snake so I was playing with it a lot, and I noticed the snake was soaking in its water dish and it had black specks on it. This is some good info to know in case I my little guy gets em. I'm not worried about it too much since he's my only snake but these things can happen. I've seen the mite problem with birds, anything made of rope got trashed and replaced to be sure, along with plenty of treatments, etc.
    But what about the poor tiny arachnids? Mites need to eat too! Just kidding, they definitely shouldn't be on our pets. Just had to make the joke since I love so many bugs now cuz of you. I once hydrated a slug that strayed from moist land, I'm usually complaining about them.
    Somehow, mites seem like less of a problem than some humans can be. 🙄

    Not a reptile keeper , but I've always wondered why you and other reptile keepers don't use diatomaceous earth. You can't t use it around invertebrates, isopods and springtails but it seems to me you could do this. line a quarentinebox with white paper, put in a white hide NO water . Make sure your snake is dry , using your hands cover it in DE , keeping it out of the eyes. Brush off excess, put snake in quarantine box for 90 minutes, mites are small, so the DE will work fairly fast. Rinse the snake in clear water, let it have a good drink, and add a full water dish to quarantine box return snake to quarantine box. Repeat if needed

    • @NewEnglandReptile
      @NewEnglandReptile  5 місяців тому +1

      Ivermectin is not really water soluble so it must constantly be shaken up etc. topically it’s not the goto. If the animal
      Was injected at correct dose ( not a colubrids etc) it would kill any blood feeding mite or tick

    Kevin, this was a great video. Thank you! I have a hypo BCI I got from a local pet shop. When we acquired her, she had mites, and quite a heavy infestation. The research I did pointed heavily towards using a dilute ivermectin solution, and treating the snake directly with said diluted solution, as well as switching to paper towels and spraying the bedding. We did this twice a week, two weeks in a row.
    It worked fantastically. However, I didn’t see this in the video. I would assume it’s because it can be dangerous and kill your snake if the person does not properly dilute the solution. I did an insane amount of research and errored on the side of caution with the concentration.
    I was wondering, what’s your opinion on the ivermectin? I would like to know, because if we run into this issue again, I’d like to see what the expert has to say! Appreciate your time, and as always, the fantastic videos.
