Boxler Maple Farm, is a family owned farm located in Western New York. Our family spends our time learning, growing, and working together to build a life we are proud of.
A video from 2022, I think enough time has finally passed for me to get over this mistake 😂
There’s two kinds of experienced sugar makers…those who have burned their pans, and those who won’t admit it.
😂😂 I like that!
Yup, I was thinking the same thing. Another comment, your not a real sugar maker until you've burnt a pan....now you have officially graduated.
Experienced boiler here- 1st year a little scorch when I drained a pan while still over fire and one pan boiled over. Some people learn from a little bump, some from a crash. I've been fortunate.
No seasoned sailor ever became a master on calm seas.
And I guess you don’t truly learn until you have made some mistakes
I was doing a little remodel work in a friend's house. As I was hanging Crown Molding over the range my ladder gave out. I crashed onto the fairly new Induction Range and broke the stove top. The whole stove top was ruined.
We couldn't find a replacement top that wasn't 2 weeks away, so we had to buy a whole new range, $2,000. No profit in that job even though the insurance covered the cost.
I still have that range in my shed. I was going to buy a replacement top for $600 and put it in my kitchen. I kept forgetting about it
Had a back pan burn like this in 2004. We had a new one built by Dominion&Grimm by the third day and was back boiling the fourth day after chores.
It’s always nice when you can get good service and quick turn around times!
I’m glad nobody got injured, 👍
Me too!
We all make mistakes. That is farming. No one was injured only pride. Wonderful that you had a backup plan and repairs
Thank you and your family for the wonderful nectar of the trees.
Alarms matter. Learn and grow. God Bless.
Yup. The kicker is that we have all the alarms we just didn’t have them all hooked up since moving to the new building and the one that was hooked up was working on and off and we never fixed it 🤦♀️
Ouch!😬😆…I don’t think Warren will be able to work his magic on that! My crew always say “if I had an SOP to read, this wouldn’t have happened!”…here’s looking at you dad!! Just kidding! Maybe it can be upcycled?…feed trough? Trailer? A farmer never throws anything out!! Especially something that expensive 😅
I run the exact same evaporator. That's pretty impressive that you lit the whole thing on fire.. lesson yes.
ran a wood fired preheater on a 20k gal a season farm, thank you for showing the ugly, i never saw this happen in the 2 years i ran the arch, but was made painfully aware by the bosses if this happened i would probably be better off jumping into the firebox and not coming out lol. i see the pain in your eyes this is not an easy pill to swallow. props to you for bucking up, showing us your mistake and making the best of it 💚
And that's how Boxler Maple Reality TV series got created!🎉❤😅 can't wait to buy the first season!
Haha if only you knew and saw all the mistakes! The limit does not exist
I have learned hard lessons also Always trust your senses Hearing, sight, smell, ect they never malfunction You smelled something odd and out of the ordinary enough to consult your brother and oh brother it got out of hand The extra boiling pan was a life saver thats what experienced farmers are so good at , backup plans, thinking on their feet , and getting back to business regardless of the hour on the clock its a lifesyle not a job good recovery!
It is crazy how quickly we were back to boiling, like nothing happened. Thank goodness for backups
Better late than never reaching out, “..it” happens. I have family in Vermont who’ve been in the Maple business for a very, very, very loonnnggg time that have had catastrophes happen like this and they’ve survived very well. Something about the sweetness of maple. Hang in there and keep the vids coming and have a great season.👍
I tap only 180 trees and have 2x6 evaporator and I have burnt the finish pan on 2 occasions, but still use it it’s dimpled on the bottom. When it happens it is very fast , I always keep water on the ready! I think most of us have burnt front pans before but you did a great job on yours! I hope you have had a good season despite the set back !
At least every one was safe ! And the new beautiful sugar shack is ok !!!
If that burned down I would have had to of flee the country 😂
We’ve all got those stories 😆 at least it wasn’t the sugar shanty on fire! Thanks for sharing 😅
True story
It happens to the best of us
Oh Yes, I been there at Blue Eye Maple Syrup! Burn the Syrup pan better yet destroyed the syrup pan! I was ready to quit right there but my neighbor stop by talk me out of it.I guess it Live and learn!
A syrup maker that hasn't scorched a pan is like a blacksmith that never burnt his hand.
They just haven’t been doing it long enough!
Thats cooking folks!!!! Woah, glad you had a backup!! ..... P.S. I'll order that Dark/ Amber!! LoL God Bless you guys, glad you caught it when you did.
Me too!
Happens all the time ussually its syrup pans that get burnt up.
My wife and I make maple syrup in maine Lets just say we know the feeling of burning up a pan LOL.They say you haven't made maple syrup if you don't burn up a pan. We will be enjoying alot of late nights soon here.We love your videos.
Yup! If you haven’t burned one you haven’t made syrup long enough…this was my first so I can officially call myself a sugar maker now 😂
That’ll make you appreciate the new steam rig a little more. One less thing to have to worry about
yes! We are excited about that!
Wow! That could have been much worse. Life happens when we least expect it.
We go hard in season and when you're tired it's easy to get complacent make mistakes. You mentioned alarms on your evaporator. We have an emergency shut off if the back pan gets too low. I mucked up last season while unloading some pallets of barrels. Accidentally raised the forks too high while backing up, I didn't have them locked in and they fell off of the tractor arm on top of the cab, rolled off the cab onto the hood and smashed the windshield. It still eats at me a year later.
Right, so crazy how long mistakes can eat at ya but we’ve all made them. mistakes are inevitable, it means we’re learning and growing!
A night I’ll never forget 😅
Me either.
Happy your all okay.
That’s one hot farmer! Wow!
So sorry this happened to you guys ,you all work very hard ,happened to us also .thanks for sharing.
Keep your chin up and keep on going.
Well, thankful that your alive! material possession can be replaced. Great video!!!
Exactly! Things can always be replaced although some things are more expensive than others! Lol
LoL yes'mam, they sure are.
@@MapleFarmer
Sorry about the problem cooking syrup, better days ahead, stay safe ,Rock on .
This is why I love your videos……it’s the good and bad in an honest, candid conversational tone. Family is absolutely the most important👍
I appreciate that, thanks for watching!
If you do nothing, you can't do anything wrong! Keep up the good work girl ! Stay healty !
I messed up a RO once & called a friend of mine in a panic. He has 30+ years making sugar. He told me if you’re not making mistakes then you’re not making syrup. I was able to get the part in 2 days & was back at it.
I make so many mistakes it’s crazy! Lol
Thanks for sharing. Scorched my 2x6 last year. Happens fast. Love your timber frame “shack” and glad no injuries. Hope you all have a great season.
Yea it’s a relate-able mistake but man does it suck when it happens
Yup, you definitely won’t do that again, especially with the steam evaporator!
My mom always said you learn from your mistakes , a least no one got hurt or it didn't start your beautiful new building on fire, love watching your videos ,keep them coming .❤❤
Yup almost burned it to the ground but luckily I didn’t 😂
@@MapleFarmer oh BTW, your little one is so cute , I have a grandson about the same age 😁
@@MapleFarmerseems I remember a video back when you guys first built the new place. Something with false smoke alarm I think but seem maybe. But as much as you guys put in to the building. I would get a fire suppression system where the key places of fire. Better to have and not use then to not have and need. We all are human and make mistakes unfortunately. I feel you have some good ones that never got told to dad of mess ups 😉😂 we all have one or two 😅😂
Wow Nikki, that's not good. But like everyone else is saying: nobody got hurt, nobody died, and the shanty is still standing; I'd say count your blessings.
Well spoken
Wicked bummah! Keep sappin!! 👍👍🍁🍁
So Sorry
Don't be hard on yourself things happen but building still there no one hurt there is the rest of the year to be
So sorry this had to happen, thankfully no one was injured! May I ask where you purchased the precision tapping tool you are using. Appreciate your candor, be safe! From east central Minnesota.
good video and cool share, mishaps seem to happen in every field. really awesome looking set up you guys have. Did the sap start to flow by you?
Not yet we are just starting to tap. The sap should be flowing by the end of next week around here
Mistakes unfortunately will always happen. The trick is to hopefully learn from the mistake & not do the same mistake again.
Wow thats some burnt damage, just curious do you not have fire suppression attached to that? We use to run a 20 foot deep fryer and had a halon system that we had to use once. Can it be rebuilt?
So sorry this happened but thankful no one was hurt. I have toasted my share of pans. It is so easy to think you have everything set up right and then forget to open a valve, have a float set wrong, a non working sight glass or simply run out of sap. We have had open valves at gathering tanks, releasers stuck open, separated mainlines, frozen pipes and rafters on fire (that water pump and garden hose were the best $200 I've ever spent!) We just throw our arms in the air to signal a touchdown and exclaim (with relief) "No one got hurt!"
I have a cdl 3x10. I burnt the two front pans last year
😢
That's crazy but it could have been worse glad you didn't get hurt
A friend also burnt his pan two years ago exact same situation, alarms didn't work, probably took about 18 hours to clean and get back in service, didn't catch on fire, don't know what it did too it's service life.the other bitch of it was the pan was only a year old.
I heard about this when it happened. Was wondering if you'd do a video on it.
I thought about filming it as it happened but know better than to follow through on that idea… 😂
Let’s go Buffalo!! Go Bills!!
Go bills!! ❤️💙
Ouch...
Yup. At least I didn’t burn the building down…. Close tho
Looks like one of our propane tanks (superior plus)
No one is perfect. Chin up....press on.😊
How did you put out the fire? Does someone have to be there at all times when the evaporator is going?
Turned off the evaporator and used Permeate water from the silo. Yea someone needs to be there at all times while it’s running we try to have at least 2 people there as one fills barrels and watches the ro while the other runs the evaporator.
That mishap won't happen again. A full on , eyes on inspection will happen from this point on.
Nikki, sorry to hear that this happened. The way to look at it is that your dad cannot fire you, he just spend a lot of money training you. 😊. I was confused in the beginning when you said that it was near the end for the season, I didn’t think that the sap had started to run yet this year. Ken
He always says “I can’t fire you, if I never hired you” …. I’m like that stray cat that keeps coming back even when I’m not wanted 😂
Your also very lucky that that's the only damage done.
"shit happens" 🙂
I'm so sorry that happened Nikki! I'm sure it scared you to death! I thought you guys were already using the steam evaporator. What stopped the flow of sap to the evaporator?
We can out of sap. It was terrible I didn’t show my face in the shanty for a full 24 hours after that 😳
They wouldn’t dare fire you!
As my dad says…. “I can’t fire you because I never hired you” 😂
Boiler and Machinery coverage (Insurance)?
Looks like a little remedial training in the basics will be required. Take care.
We burnt our brand new front pan pan 2 years ago , not a fun day
Yea not a fun day at all. Especially when my dad and brother already think I screw everything up 🫠
😢😢 omg....
Video needed an intro to tell everyone this was from 2022 not THIS YEAR!
Yea I should have did an intro saying it’s a throw back! I would have posted it sooner but everything felt “too soon” 😂
Please explain to me why this isn't repairable.
we all make mistakes, we all learn from them also the people that say they have not made a mistake are full of BS
learn as a team and put things in place so it wont happen again
If ppl haven’t made mistakes they are probably not willing to try anything new and are very boring people!
Oh no!! At least you didn’t burn your sugar shack to the ground 😬 I have seen that happen and it’s never good but like you said, nobody got hurt and that’s the main concern. I’m assuming that there will be a 25% price increase this year for syrup lol I’m joking 😝 I always say that you learn from your mistakes but Nikki I think you might be able to pass this one off on your brother, he did say it was fine lol. Glad everyone is ok and you guys are back up and running!! 💪💪
Sorry about your loss, humble pie is never good even with maple syrup. . . BUT I have a question, do you actually have sap running the second week in January?? I thought the sap flow did not start till late winter (Mar. or April?) I enjoy your videos!! Thanks! S. Carolina
We have had early sap runs in the last. We have not started tapping yet this year. This video is from 2022.
We had a run last week, and we're in ENY. Last year was the same for us too!
Been there done that. Not to that scale though.
Juat had this happen last week not as bad but sadly now i cant say ive never burnt a pan only lost 3 gallons
Lucky it was only 3 gallons!
You've been baptized by fire you are a true sugar maker 😊
Lol dads got to realize that things going horibly wrong makes for youtube golden content
that's what I'm saying... but he doesn't like showing mistakes and also isn't a fan of me videoing anything 😂
Flavor crystals
Just not a very good flavor!
Oups ......
Hello, IF you would caught it in time, you would have had smoked maple sugar, stuff happens, I hope it did not set you back to bad money wise, it takes a little time to recover from this, and I hope it is all over and merely a memory.
That will buff right out…lol
Just might take a few years. Lol
@@MapleFarmer hopefully you have kept all the parts and oart of that beautiful building can be a museum ( tax write offs?) Of all your families history in msple farming and a learning center. Local classes can come for educational trips etc. More free publicity etc.
you don't have any snow there
Hence, not unlike your family, in agriculture you need redundancy in all vital equipment. Glad you had the backup pan. As for trusting automated systems, the more automated we become the more "oh shits" are going to happen.
Sap happen😊
What happed to that pan? Scrapped?
Yup there was absolutely no saving it
😪
OUCH !
Yup it was a rough night
Nikki, you sure did nail it though, nothing beats family and yes nobody was hurt which is the most important thing. @@MapleFarmer
Dad was so mad because he's accepting that it's ultimately his fault. That or he's not worthy of being the boss. I'm not a hater. At the end of the day, it's the bosses responsibility. So sorry that this happened.
If you can’t trust your employees to do things themselves without micro managing you’re not a very good boss. I don’t like to play the blame game as I know when I’m at fault
All you can do is joke about it now and move on sis!!
One barrel of syrup you dropped?
It sure would be nice if one barrel of syrup costs that much!
Ouch, show the good the bad and the ugly. Show everyone this a real life and not made up.
Huh?
It could have been worse I
Duck tape won't fi that...
Saw the thumbnail and paniced. Just a pan! Slide on a new one and get back to it. Only human live and learn.
Only set us back time and money. We were back to cooking in no time!
C'mon Nikki, what's life without a challenge ?
it's a nuclear melt down
🫠
shit happens
It seems to happen to me way too much! 😂
That does look pretty bad!!!!
It was awful, I wish I got video of the flames and chaos but it was a stressful time and dad would have killed me if I pulled out a camera. Lol
@@MapleFarmer I’m sure it was fine, until it suddenly wasn’t. Glad no one was hurt….
Bless your hearts, glad it was a lot worse.👍👍👍🙏🙏 Was this 2022 or 2024?
2022 I didn’t post it before because it felt like it was too soon. I should have created a new Intro explaining it was a throwback video but I honestly didn’t think of doing that until someone mentioned it in the comments
@@MapleFarmer I understand, but still glad all is well.
