I’m entering into the Church this Easter so please pray for my time during Lent. I know the attacks will be strong on my resolve to fast.

The fast is very easy brother. The Latin Rite has the easiest fast, our eastern brothers have a difficult fast not us. Remember how simple it is, all you have to do is NOT eat something to keep the fast. Focus on what you should do extra in terms of prayer and reading and don’t think about what you “can’t” have.
That’s my advice, and remember: we don’t HAVE to fast. We GET to fast. It’s a gift!

There is the greater wisdom where our tradition is both shepherd and doctor of the soul. May the councels of the pastors be the first and foremost guide to our very being.
In the connection to willing to virtue, the sins of the flesh ought be conquered by knowledge of the practices that set the being on the path of the higher powers of the soul.
Read the scriptures and forget those traditions that go against what is taught in the Bible. Jesus never said to beat yourself if you sin. What He did say was repent of those sins. He never added any punishment of the body.

@@zachsmith5515 True, but even Benedict had an Assisi prayer conference. He may have used a little Latin in his masses, but he didn’t celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass
Big mistake changing the fasting rules.
After falling away for many years,, I returned to the Church during Lent. I had spent the time in fasting and work and prayer. I went to a half-day Lenten retreat and listened to a Priest assure us that fasting was just another name for a diet. It was not a holy offering.
Sad, if fasting is done for dieting then it’s not a sacrifice and has no spiritual benefits
Fasting was taught by Jesus and the Apostles. That is not penance though. Jesus never said a word about punishing ourselves after we sin. He told everyone to repent of your sins.

We must chastise our body to bring it into submission, because "we cannot raise our spirit to God, without denying our body." ~St Thomas. A "Hardened (to God) body is not tilled up and opened like the earth, to receive the seeds of the Spirit, and produce fruit. 🍊
Well, you quoted Thomas now find something in the Bible that says that. Jesus never did. Paul nor Peter never said anything like that. We are to take care of our bodies and treat them with respect. But nowhere does Jesus say to punish your body or harden your body.
We are to study the scriptures and do what is right for our bodies. To punish our bodies for what our spirits and minds do is wrong. The Orthodox priest that has those small whips they flog themselves with. They are abusing what God gave them. They are not pleasing God but those around them.

@@bcalvert321 and orthodox priests don’t usually self flagellate. That was a medieval practice largely, and almost exclusively among us Roman rite Catholics and isn’t practiced anywhere on any large scale anymore.

This has very strong perfectionist and puritan vibes. You might of been saying the right things but in the worst way.
He's preaching penance. How else would you relay this message. We are so soft and self pleasing that we think anything contrary to self satisfaction is extreme. There's not very many of us that couldn't live on our stored calories (fat) for quite a while.

@@zacharynelson5731 Anthony is correct. Penance is not scriptural. Jesus never taught it nor did Paul or Peter. If this is a Catholic tradition thing then it is totally wrong. Just another way for the church to control you.
When are you going to worship Jesus and know that the church belongs to Him? If the reason you are doing penance is that the church says so then your penance is a waste of time. If you are doing it for Jesus and He has told you too then that's different.
The church is the mystical body of Christ, and obedience to the teachings of the church is obedience to Christ.

@@zacharynelson5731 He is real, He is watching over us all the time. He is no mystery to those that know Him. Catholics seem to think they know Mary but they don't. She is in heaven praising her Son. Her Savior. Jesus is the one who interacts with us. It is Jesus alone that saves us and heals us. He sends the Holy Spirit to talk to us thru a prophet and not a mystic. The so-called mystics get their "words" straight from the Bible. It is called Revelation. Try reading it sometime. You will learn more about what is to happen than from any Catholic mystic. I have yet to see a warning or a mystery from any of them. Why because they haven't a clue what they are. All the warnings we need are in the Bible.
