Carnivorous plants are plants that obtain small or large amounts of their nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and eating animals or protozoa, usually insects and other arthropods. Carnivorous plants are adapted to grow in places where the soil is arid or lacking in nutrients, such as peat swamps which contain acid. Charles Darwin wrote Insectivorous Plants, the first famous treatise on carnivorous plants, in 1875.
