I just gotta say; I really appreciate how the audio is used in Dark's videos. Many storytellers on YT just put generic scary ambience in the background and call it a day. But in Dark's videos, it's obvious how the background audio is a conscious choice. It supports the narrative so perfectly. Everything from the creepy sound effects to the sombre piano music. It really makes a difference!
It's way more immersive! Keep up the brilliant work!

I didn't expect this classic to be getting a 2022 narration, it brings me back to 2010 (which I feel old for saying). I hope "Classics" becomes a new series; these older stories are important to internet culture so it's nice to hear them again.

I can tell you worked really hard on this one. Your immersion in this one reminds me of Left Right game and other long ones where you thru out the story have different tones and states of panic or whatever emotion you’re expressing, your immersion is still unmatched. That’s why you’re the best at what you do. Close your eyes and listen and it’s like we are right next to you, or even inside the story. Beautiful. The vocabulary of these writers helps a lot too. So much immersive writing in creepypastas. That’s why I’ve listened to them for 10 plus years.

The sound effects you include in the video are *absolutely unnerving.* Sometimes I think the sound is occurring in reality, especially when the sound comes from just one side of my headphones. I’ve been startled many times in various stories I listened to on your channel. In this video, the quiet but clearly maniacal laugh (that came out of only one side of my headphones) scared the living daylights out of me as I’m alone in Washington Square Park in NYC - well not entirely alone as there are other people here of course but I’m by myself here alone - & it’s dark out & there’s a chill in the air from the winter wind. I had my back turned to the walkway, facing a bench as I rummaged through my bad, so I couldn’t see anyone behind me nor in my periphery if beside me. Suddenly I heard the laughter coming from the left & I was absolutely petrified me for a moment there. I startled & looked around to see no one near me on the pathway, realizing after what felt like an eternity but only lasted a second or two that it was coming from the video. This is why your channel is so brilliant & stands apart from all other horror story / creepy pasta channels. Ever since finding your channel I haven’t listened to even a single horror story video by another channel/ creator. Once you go The Dark Somnium, you won’t go back to any other of ‘em. lol

tbh I've been thinking what it is about this story that has made it hold up so much better than so many other old video game creepypastas (many of which were, admittedly, arguably kind of knockoffs of it), and tbh I think the biggest thing is that the psychological hell that the haunted cartridge puts the protagonist through feels somehow more sincere than in a lot of similar stories, like it doesn't try to lay the horror on too thick with excesses like gore images popping up in the game or characters having "hyper-realistic eyes" (seriously, why was that such a cliche in creepypastas for a while? lol), it stays mostly true to the original material in a game that I think most people remember finding fairly creepy and disturbing in itself when they played it as kids, and it doesn't jump from 0 to 100 like some of those "I played Pokémon, but Lavender Town was all messed up and then a demon talked to me through the game and then my whole family was dead" sort of stories so often do, and I think for that reason it's saved from feeling childish and silly in the way some of those other stories do (to me, at least).
Like it uses a lot of both restrained and effective horror, and it appeals to "negative nostalgia" but also has enough of an overall story as to still suspend disbelief and not just feel like pandering to the game's fans. Like I guess to me it just feels a lot more "grown up" than a lot of other creepypastas of this type, and it feels like a lot of other "haunted cartridge" pastas (practically a genre unto itself) were really just attempts at duplicating "Ben Drowned" without the authors grasping a lot of the subtleties that made it effective.
Anyway, sorry for the mini-essay on your comment, this just as came to right now and I feel like I needed to share it with someone lol.

I like this story. It really gives out the detail needed for us to know what happened. It’s realistic in some way too. I think creepypasta stories may be better in some way than the nosleep stories or maybe they’re both. I was listening to this at school by the way.

That nightmare with the statue in the game following him reminds me of one of my own nightmares, back when I was a child. I had started playing diablo 2 recently, and just gotten to about halfway through act 3. Small backstory for those who don't know: When you arrive at act 3 for the first time, shortly after you leave town, there's a dark figure, who walks a short distance and then disappears. When he disappears, some glowing orbs will form and a few small demons will appear from those orbs, nothing too difficult to deal with but they are certainly strange and do not appear anywhere else until act 4. Another small background information, towns in diablo 2 are safe zones, no demons can enter and your character can't die while in town. Characters are also unable to use any of their combat skills inside town (the skill icon will turn from white to red to signal that the skill can't be used), and of course the town is also where characters respawn if they die.
In my dream I was in the town of act 3, and I noticed it was strange that suddenly the skill icons turned from red to white. It was also not the usual diablo 2 view from above, but instead a first person perspective. Then all of a sudden those glowing orbs started to appear, but instead of them just being very few they appeared all over the screen, and a huge mass of those demons popped out, right in the middle of the town. They started attacking not only me but also the npcs (who are neccessary to buy healing potions, get quests, etc). So I had to fight very hard and desperately, trying to save at least the most essential npcs, which was very difficult because in act 3 they are particularly spread out, more than in any other town. I saw one npc after another slowly die and I knew I wouldn't be able to last for very long until the whole town was killed by demons, completely preventing me from progressing further or, eventually, preventing me from doing anything other than just dying over and over. When health was very low and I had run out of potions (with the potion merchant already dead) I woke up. Today I can smile about it, but back then when I was still a child it wasn't a very nice dream, I was quite upset about it and had to start up the game immediately just to confirm that everything was still as it should be and all the crazy things were really just a dream.
Also, imagine noticing a single icon popping up on your desktop. My desktop is so full that the icons literally extend past the screen. Whenever I want to select something I just click on a random location, type the first few letters of the name of whatever I want to open/execute, and hit enter. It's the only way to navigate my desktop. lmao
One weird thing about the whole infection thing if this "ben" entity can really spread through cables it would already be everywhere. Like, why wouldn't it be able to just spread to anything connected to the internet?

You were the very first creepy pasta narrator I ever listened to and by far one of the greatest at it. No disrespect to any other top notch narrators like Romnex and many others, I just really prefer your voice it's extremely relaxing. Paired with your music and audio effects I have a hard time not falling asleep and having to replay the story a couple times over lol. Once again great job DS!¡
